"The eyes of the world are on Hong Kong today. I wish you all a successful transition and a prosperous and peaceful future."
On 30 June 1997, Prince Charles, Prince of Wales attended the Hong Kong Handover Sunset Farewell Ceremony, which marked the official transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the People's Republic of China. Also in attendance were Chris Patten, the Governor of Hong Kong, his wife Lavender Patten, and Tony Blair MP, the British Prime Minister.
At 11:30pm, as rain fell on HMS Tamar military base in Wan Chai, the Prince of Wales read a speech on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II. Prince Charles spoke of the history of Britain's colonial role in Hong Kong, the shared cultural and economic ties between them, and Hong Kong's future as a Chinese administrative territory.
