This is a great video about the CB500. I have the same black one as yours, the old one with 62k km. Before it, I had an old one with drum brakes, I sold it to a friend, it is still alive with about 100k km. I use the motorcycle on the track in the city,shorter trips and it does everything without problems .Regardless of the fact that she is 24 years old .The best motorcycle in the world.

It WILL do autobahn, 2-up and touring. I've done all three on mine - including a +1000 mile IBA certification ride. Eventually - after 50k miles - it had a sibling in the shed; a Blackbird, which is essentially a double CB500 with a bit of Extra amenities. Eg. a clock. But I keep returning to my CB500 because of its WYSIWYG approach to everything. It's a no-nonsens bike that will take you literally everywhere. Scraping pegs on Transfăgărășan, riding 2-up with the missus on Monaco racetrack, exploring balcony roads in France and pegging the revcounter at 8000 rpm for 500 kilometers solid on autobahn; maximum cruise speed. Been there, done that. No issues, no hiccups, nothing. Indeed a good bike.
@TheRantyRider

@MartinFiltenborg - Thanks for the comment, did you do two -up with luggage at high speed? The CB will do these individually in my experience but maybe two out of three and not all three. As for the clock, we can get small bolt-on ones from Oxford in the UK, these fit to one of the switchgear bolts, or the tried and trusted 'cheap digital watch around the bars' is always an option. Good to hear from a fellow CB-er, they are beginning to die out a bit now, so it's up to us to keep them on the roads.

Honda designed the bike for 300,000 kilometers; 186,000 miles. I've had many twins, paralel power curve, but these have a rush from 6 / 7 thousand revs. The head has been ported the same as a Fireblade. The bike will commute, tour and scratch. Top is around 125 mph, but more importantly on twisty A & B roads she is in her element, can surprise many bigger bikes.

@TheBezaleel The CB is indeed a great bike for seeing off bigger bikes, on new tyres I had to stop twice and wait for a 'blade, and a couple of Kwaks - a 636 and 900 Ninja. It was the last time they said 'you are on the slowest bike, you can lead'.

I own one too. It was my first bike. I have it for about our years now. I replaced the shocks for Icons and upgraded the forks with Wilbers springs. In combination with wider handle bars, it transformed the bike completely. Handles like a bicycle now. I do everything with it and I mean it. Long touring and everyday commuting all year around. The engine is a dream and quite powerful for its 500cc. Only on long touring, I would wish to have a bit more power. The bike is very easy to work on and I learned a lot owning it. I will however upgrade to a 675 Triumph Street Triple R this year. I feel like it's time and I would love to own something more modern with ABS.

Bike is immaculate, bought from a 73 year old gentleman, totally stock, serviced, new Avon Roadrunners, new honda battery, new brake pads, load of extras. Your very welcome David. I was considering an old Triumph bonneville as my return bike but being a 65 year l remember well the issues with Triumph and TBH I've always loved Japanese bikes. The newer Triumph bonnevilles are beautiful, but are heavy, especially the Thruxton, and the Honda 500s is what it is, probably the best motorcycle ever made, for the money. I paid 2k for a piece of fine Art, reliable, beautiful, so l asked myself, which one would you marry 😆 the Triumph or Honda cb 500s and it was the Honda of course. And what fun it is riding through the twisties if you keep her lit with the revs above 6k it behaves like superbike 😆 or if that's not your thing you can ride gently. Very economical , tax, insurance, mpg, well done Honda.

@Mike Rider I think that a big problem with modern bikes is the 'bloat' of legal and company gizmos. I bought a Himalayan and Tracer 9 last year, they are about the same weight but the Tracer carries it all at the top which makes it feel heavier. ABS and other tat all adds to the weight. The 1995-2005 bikes seem to be the last of the 'biker's bikes' with later ones losing on the quality to pay for multi mode traction control, cruise control, electronic suspension and the like. If you need the electronics to save your arse any time you ride you shouldn't be on a bike.

Hi David, I'm Ray, just found your channel by chance and I'm glad I did. What a wonderful video! I've been on a Honda CB650R(the Neo Sports Cafe) I got from new in 2019 and I love it! I look at these smaller, simpler Honda bikes, thinking they'd be great for winter, as a second bike. Commenting on your video, I some times am amazed at how some people get lured into newer/cheaper bikes(Chinese bikes come to mind), that will be described as similar to or based on a Japanese bike, but when it comes to service intervals/valve checks are nothing but, requiring those at a much earlier mileage that the supposedly similar Japanese counterparts. I looked into the Vogue 500cc(very similar to the Honda CB500X) but needed a service every 3000 miles and valve checks every 6000 miles! And it only cost a few hundred pounds less that the Honda. We're talking brand new here, but the same applies on used bikes. Anyway, I waffled on long enough. Thanks for the video, you've got a new subscriber mate. Cheers, Ray.
@TheRantyRider
Жыл бұрын
@Reinaldo-iz5wz Thanks for the comment and subscription Ray. A lot of the engines used in Chinese 125s are clearly CG125 or Yamaha licenced/copies. I don't know about current quality of these but Honda clearly cut costs from abut 2009 onwards - the first year of the CB500 F/R/X family (built in Indonesia I think) had to have valve checks done at the first (600 mile) service! If you don't like short service intervals don't get a 411-engined Himalayan, they are every 3000 miles for a valve check as they are screw and locknut. The dealer services are only about £200 though (Triumph 12 000 mile major services are likely to set you back £700) by contrast my Tracer 9 goes 24 000 miles between valve checks.

Hi David, great video. Do you know what the quoted NOx emission level is for this bike? It may be present on your V5 document? I'm looking to buy one however I would need to have it emissions tested to make sure it's ULEZ exempt for London.
@TheRantyRider
Жыл бұрын
@maxexelby7566 Thanks for the comment and question. My V5 is from 2017 when I bought the bike and doesn't show any figures. As bikes weren't tested back then [as far as I know] you would have to get it tested. I don't know how likely it would be to pass, perhaps a nose around the forums may give you an idea.
@graememorrison333
7 ай бұрын
For anybody reading this in the future, they'll sail through a ULEZ emissions test. Mine got 0.10g/km (>.15 is the cutoff) on a 65,000 mile engine. (The other bits have gone over 100,000) That NOx figure is apparently quite high for these bikes too. If anything, worn jets are probably a good thing as the mixture is richer so the combustion temp is higher, hence more of the nasty NOx's get burned. I've owned my CB500s for ten years. As well as failing reg/recs (buy a Tourmax one - much better than the originals), coils will usually go for 100,000 miles before packing up and causing bad running. I've put mid-level YTS shocks on the back and it handles incredibly well. Motul 5000 oil used to make the tappets (shims/buckets whatever...) noisy and then i tried Castrol Power 1 semi synth oil. That stuff really does what it says on the tin and loosens the engine up and improves acceleration noticeably, making the bike an absolute hoot to ride. (Only downside being that i now hit reserve at 170 miles of constant town use, rather than the 200 which i previously got.)

@milanori4104 Thanks for the comment and question. I've owned and ridden them since 1999 and it's still the most all round bike I have had. The 'new' CB500s with the 471cc engine are A2 already so may be worth a look, the first ones will be coming up for 10 years old now, I would look at 2014 onwards if you go that way.

I think I'm going with this one once I get my A2 license in a 2-3 months. There are quite a few here in the Netherlands for €1-2k and most of what I read/hear about it is positive and especially as a first bike you would want something reliable like a Honda. Is it good on the highway? Or should I look into a windscreen as well? There are also some CBF 500's for around €3k. Do you think it's worth the extra 1k for the CBF instead of the CB?
@TheRantyRider
Жыл бұрын
@nulla9601 Thanks for watching and the questions. In my opinion the CB is better than the CBF as the engine is smoother and it has a centre stand. The CBF has the edge (just) on handling but is not quite as much of a complete riding package as the CB. I have ridden naked bikes since1986 so I am used to being in the wind. Small 'fly screens' are available: skidmarx.co.uk/all-products/honda-dohc-twin-cb500-1998on-universal-stylish-fly-screen-kit-tall-fly-screen-36cm although the bike shown is an XJR1300! A fly screen will direct the wind to your head so you will feel it more than if it was spread over your entire torso as well, this is why I don't use them. Before you decide test ride both the CB500 and the CBF500. If you can find a CB500S give that a go as well as it comes with the fairing which you might like.

@danshorthouse - Thanks, I needed something to keep me occupied for ten minutes after work! I have had a look on the Fowler's website where they have the parts 'fiches' for the bike: www.fowlersparts.co.uk/browser/manufacturer/honda/bike/cb500/year/1997/country/england/colour/all-colours/gallery I can't see any obvious seal for that end of the crank, the bearing surfaces will be oiled and it may be there is a lip in the crankcase that is designed to stop too much in the way of oil flow. Without playing 'find the part' I can't give you an answer to if there is an oil drain back to the engine - it may only be small - in the bottom half of the crank. If there is a small amount of oil provided to the genny it will only be with the engine running and pressurised oil circulating as most of the oil sits in the engine pan rather than in the engine so it wouldn't fill the genny. If as I think the oil is coming from the crank have a look at the level where your dipstick sits, this is well below the centreline of the crank itself. Generators don't need to be dry these days as they are well sealed and on the CBF1000 the mk 2 engine has more oil flow to aid in cooling the genny as these are prone to overheat if accessories are added. I hope that helps, if you get an answer from the forums please post in here.

My mum's got that photo displayed in my old childhood bedroom, I see it every time I visit. I must have had my CB500 for at least 13 years. I was always convinced the fan didn't work, as I only remember it coming on not long after I bought it and never again, but John Lee Motorcycles didn't seem to think there was a problem. It would be good to compare my current bike, a Yamaha XJ6 Diversion, with the CB, you get a new bike and the memories of how the old one felt fade away.

@Gavin Hancock I hope you don't mean the photo of me and a wrecked bike! The fan on the CB500 doesn't come on until the needle points at the thermometer logo on the gauge and then for not very long. The Hornet 9 stays 'cold' for a long time but three minutes in traffic in what we laughingly call 'summer' in the UK and it's going off constantly. How are you getting on with the Yammy? Are we getting out for a ride soon? The Tracer is all better now but I have a damaged hand where they had to wrestle the dosh for the repair from me.

Hi David, is the older CB500 easier to work on than the CBF ? I think the CBF is a bit better with a pillion...Im 173cm and I am 56. Ride since 1985, from smaller to heavier bikes. Due to a hip replacement (and age) and preservation of my shoes I dont to pull heavy bikes on a centrestand anymore. Thats why I want a smaller bike, I mostly drive smaller roads but I cant avoid huighways. Although the max speed is 100 km/h here (at night 130) but I rarely drive at that time, another option is a NTV650 (not the uglu but very handy Deauville ...) which is a good bike as well. I like (and need) to have a topcase, maybe a small screen, although it aint really necessary. I only need the bike occasionaly cause I take the bus and train as well (but the timetable isnt very royal nowadays ...) nor are the number of destinations ...Which one would you advice ?
@TheRantyRider
Жыл бұрын
@ooievaar6756 Thanks for the comment and question. The CB500 is lighter than the CBF and easy to put on the centrestand, it's more about technique than strength. The bike feels light as it is a lot lower than modern bikes and the weight is low down. Screens are easily available but luggage might be more of an Ebay search than new stuff. The CB500S has a top fairing but these aren't as common so you may struggle to find one. You will find both the CB and CBF great on the smaller twisty roads but 130 is stretching the engine a little but certainly doable. The CB has to run on E5 fuel (5% ethanol) or less, using E10 will see the fuel lines degrade, possibly along with other parts such as carb diaphragms and inlet tracts, I think the same is true for the CBF but others may chip in. The bikes are easy to work on for maintenance but the tank on the CB is far easier to remove than that on the CBF. The CB also runs more smoothly. The CB seat is as comfortable as the CBF but easier to remove as it is one piece wheras the CBF needs a 5 mm Allen key to remove the front seat pad. The NTV is also a good bike, as is the very heavy but well thought out Deauville (the 'baby Pan European') so a lot may depend on the availability of each model where you live. The last CB500s are 20 years old now and supply will be getting more scarce. A quick look online has only three currently for sale in the UK, and four CBFs. I find the CB to be the better bike, but you can also look at the 471 CC bikes from around 2012 onwards, more easily available and I doubt you would struggle even with an 'X' varient. The only downside is that the build quality is not as good. I hope you find something that suits you.

@ooievaar6756 The CB500 certainly needs the E5 rather than E10 according to the original information at the time of the switch, which, apart from mine looking pristine, is the reason I don't ride it much! However I had a quick look online and found this page: check-vehicle-compatibility-e10-petrol.service.gov.uk/manufacturer/Honda%20Motorcycles Which states "All Honda motorcycles and mopeds produced for the EU market since 1993 can use ethanol-blended gasoline up to 10% although carburettor-equipped models could experience poor driveability in cold weather conditions." The Honda website www.honda.co.uk/motorcycles/my-bike/E10-fuel-update-2021.html directed me to the HM Government page.

I've got a 1997 Cb500v and I bought a very low mileage cb500x thinking that would be the bike to replace the old girl. I have to say it was a complete let down, the new one has no character and yet manages to be more annoyingly vibey than the old one. The new one was no where near as peppy and overtakes involved a lot more planning. The new one was massively better on fuel but that came with the downside that the first eighth of the throttle was like an on/off switch. The new one was no where near as much fun or as engaging and the cardinal sin for a Honda was the quality on the new one was shockingly poor. When I sold it at 8,000 miles it already had lumps of paint missing of the frame that I had had to touch in and the coatings on the engine cases were chipping and everything just felt a bit cheap. I gave the new one a fair shot covering about 3,000 miles in about 6 months but, in the end, the old girl is still with me and the new one has gone to pastures new.

@Mike-T120 Thanks for the comment. I mentioned recently that I bought a CB500X new in 2014 from Blade in Stratford on Avon and within a few days the frame around the swingarm pivot was going rusty. They managed to break a fork seal on the first service (6 week wait) and refused to deal sensibly with me over the corrosion. Honda UK weren't interested either. Eventually after being off the road for nine months as I refused to ride it it was repainted under warranty then traded in. I won't buy another new Honda because of this and I have never set foot in Blade again. The quality of the '97 bike (one of the first with a rear disk brake?) is far better, they don't seem to make them like that any more.

Hey again mate have a question or two… :) im getting around 210 miles before hitting reserve on fuel,does this seem about right? Also i have noticed a slight bit of handlebar wobble when one handed or if i take both hand off completely?I originally noticed the wobble when indicating.I spoke to a older gentleman/mechanic that knows these bikes and he said the wobble is normal on these? Thanks in advance!!
@TheRantyRider
7 ай бұрын
@danshorthouse I did 217 miles on my original [black] one without hitting reserve before bottling it and filling up, from memory I put in about 15 litres so I still had three to go but I wasn't far from reserve. This was with panniers but on a motorway so the fuel economy would have been better, so your 210 miles is about right. I haven't noticed a wobble, I get one at about 40 on my Hornet with panniers on but unless I take my hands off the bars I don't notice it. Is the wobble at any particular speed range? Do you have a flyscreen or anything else mounted on the bars?

To add mate… today I checked wheel bearing/steering bearings and had the front wheel balanced and no difference. I have noticed that my bar ends are plastic and not weighed but I doubt its this. The wobble is anything between 30-55mph and only if you take your hands off.at 60-100mph the problem doesn’t exist. Kind regards
@TheRantyRider
7 ай бұрын
@danshorthouse Again, ignore the bits you already know. Weighted bar ends are to reduce or remove vibrations that could cause a wobble if they build as they have a mass at the end of a lever so an inertia that needs to be overcome to start them moving. If you have a broom handle balanced horizontally on a finger it doesn't take a lot of effort to get it moving. Now try the same with a plank with a couple of bricks on each end [best to use a fulcrum rather than your finger] and more effort is needed. What tyres are you using? Standard fit are BT45s, changing can sometimes cause odd effects but I wouldn't have thought a tankslapper was one. It may be worth checking the rear bearings, swingarm play and chain alignment to eliminate those as well, but it may be OOTT - one of those things. Once the weather imprves enough for me to get my Sunday Best 500 out I'll check for the effect. That may be a while looking at the forecast and the flooding in the Nene valley that I saw yesterday.

Hey i have recently brought a Honda CB500 1999 with 16kmiles. Anyway i have many bike but nothing like this and i have noticed that if you let the bike tick over for 15-20mins the temperature will reach half and the fan with come on as normal.but when im riding it the temperature is low around 20% up from the bottom. Is this normal? Thanks in advance 🇬🇧
@TheRantyRider
7 ай бұрын
@danshorthouse Don't worry, that is normal in my experience. Some of the effect will be due to ambient temperature - as I write this it is January and my bikes take a while to warm up. The fan should kick in with the temperature gauge pointing roughly at the top of the thermometer symbol which, as you say, will be after about 20 min of the engine running in tickover and stationary. I have hardly ever had the fan come on while riding unless it's hot and I am in stop-start traffic. The radiator seems to dump excess heat efficintly but keeps the engine temperature pretty constant. In comparison my 900 Hornet takes ages to warm up, about 30 min if I am doing a fan check, but as soon as I hit traffic on a warm day the fan will be kicking in and out constantly. One of my friends has a BMW S1000XR and the fan on that starts up as soon as we stop moving. I hope you enjoy the bike it is very low milage for the year and if looked after has a long life ahead of it.

@@TheRantyRider i do have another query mate.i took the bike for a MOT the other day and after he was finished I noticed two tiny spots of what looked like coolant on the floor and today i rode the bike to my garage (half a mile away from cold) and when i was done and ready to leave i again noticed a drop of what looked like coolant on the floor,after i wiped it up with a white paper towel its definitely green as my coolant.just above under the middle of the bike are the overflow pipes and one was a little wet at the end and again green residue.i looked at a diagram of the bike online and i think this pipe is the overflow for my expansion tank.(the expansion tank has two pipes the one on the bottom of the bottle leads to the overflow under the radiator cap and the one on the top of the bottle leads underneath the bike and joins the other overflows) i have checked the level in the expansion bottle and its a little high but only slightly,i also removed the radiator cap under the seat and i couldn’t see the coolant until i gently pressed a coolant pipe and it came right to the top so that seems fine. Any thoughts? :)
@TheRantyRider
7 ай бұрын
@danshorthouse I'm not that hot on cooling systems to be honest, the expansion tank on the right hand side being overfilled may be the problem. The manual states that the level is checked when the bike is warm rather than cold so that would be my first check. The next thing I would do would be to feel the pipes to the pump and radiator as the bike warms, the ones on the rad should be cold until the valve opens then warm up, with one hotter than the other. It's possible there is a leak, especially from a pipe if they are the original ones, or the gasket for the water pump can also go. You need to have a crawl on the floor with a torch and look for white fuzzy residue (like baked on road salt) - this may be on the bottom of the overflow pipe if that is the source. Let me know how you get on.

The rest of the time I was arguing with Blade in Stratford Upon Avon and Honda UK about a warranty claim as the frame had badly corroded wihin a week of purchase - and it was brand new. While the engine does have a flatter torque curve than the 499 cc engine and is more tractable throughout the rev range the 'hole' isn't really there in the larger engine apart from on the graphs. It is a less linear ride in torque governed by the emissions [sound and noise] regs and not really noticable when riding. The experience with Blade and Honda with the CB500X has ensured that I will never buy another new Honda, or a second hand one after about 2009 because of the shoddy build quality and complete lack of interest when a problem occurs.

@mociczyczki I've dug out the dyno graph from 2008 when my bike had about 50 000 miles on it, there is a dip of 2 ft lb [Peak at 4800 is 33 ft lb] from 4800 to 6000 RPM and a peak torque of 37 ft lb at about 7500 RPM. Peak HP is 57.87 at 9150 RPM, but these figures are from a mobile dyno at the Ace Cafe and will be corrected for crank so probably not totally reliable. I am more of a low to mid RPM rider on the CB and Hornet [review elsewhere on my channel] except for the occasional fun blip and the only bike I ride at 5/6ths of the way up the rev range is my Himalayan-and that's because 5000 RPM is about 65 MPH and it red lines at about 6!
