Thank you for this great video. It really helped out a lot. I had tried to do in all from under the car (2003 Suburban) but this was too hard for me. I had given up and was going to take it to a mechanic, who wanted $250 labor to install my starter. After watching your video, I took the passenger side tire off and that was the solution for me. No need to remove the plastic wheels well, just the tire. Just taking the tire off allowed me to get to the electrical connections and was able to remove them using a small 1/4 inch drive socket. The starter was then very easy to remove and replace. For me, reattaching the electrical wires after bolting the new starter in seemed to work out well. Thanks again! This was a great help!

I have A 99 GMC 2500 Sierra and my starter is shot from some jack a$$ know it alls tow guys cuz they told mey started was junk when I knew it was the crappy Walmart battery. So they pounded on it and now 2 weeks later I'm stranded. So I'm actually hoping I don't have to take the tire off and I may be able to find tools to change it but don't have nothing to jack my tire up and take it off. We will see how it goes. Hopefully my connections are 1/4 inch as well.

At 1:06 - Removing the transmission inspection cover/ dust shield. I tried installing the starter with this in place on a 2003 Sierra 1500 / 4.8L for an embarrassingly long time- So long I started looking at KZitem videos. Then I saw Master Jacks showing this cover, and oh yeah, removed the cover on my truck, and that [lovely] starter was fully installed in another ten minutes. THANK YOU Master Jacks.

This video was extremely helpful, thank you. Just finished this job up. I didn’t have a jack but was still able to do this with the tire on and truck on the ground. I’ll reemphasize the part at 1:35. Take the 13mm nut off the solenoid before you try and wrestle with removing the starter, I forgot to and the starter would not come out enough. To put that cable back on at the end, I used a swivel head and two 6” extensions on a ratchet, between the frame and manifold heat shield. Play around with the positioning a bit. It was enough to get the nut on tight.

2002 CHEVY SUBURBAN …Just in case anyone was having this problem . No crank no start …… fuel and battery gauges flip up still like it’s going to start and then dead silence . Replaced starter and back on the rd . Also when it went out couple issues I had was I tried jumping it one more time with a flat head and it blew the 40 amp fuse which caused the gas and battery gauge to stop flipping up when key was turned to on position . Lastly the replacement starter I purchased was longer than the original . So if you ran into that problem just know it will ….. I repeat will fit so don’t worry . Hope I helped someone as I searched every video looking for someone with the same issue on their suburban or if the larger one would fit and could t find not one video .

I did not take off the wheel. I did take off the wheel well cover. A 1/4 in socket wrench with the 8mm definitely was helpful. I also sanded the terminals after I disconnected them as they had a good bit of corrosion and rust on them. And then threw on some dielectric grease when I reconnected the terminals. Definitely shop starters online. Much cheaper than auto parts stores.

Don't need to remove wheel, just remove bolt holding 2 aluminium tubes to the engine, also unclip 2 electric wires below that nut that go to starter, then you can push wires and tubes out of the way so you can push starter toward front to disengage from transmission. Electric line nuts can be removed once you get starter out, removing heat shield is important, it just swivels and unclips.

I would say your starter is highly suspect. Sometimes you won't even get a click. Starters often fail in cold temps when mechanical resistance and amperage draw are high. You could try wacking the side of the starter with a hammer or getting the vehicle to a warm location to see if it fires.
