Freire seemed to have some tactical genius. He won a lot of races just being in the right place and attacking at the right moment. Incredible that a group like that watched him ride away with like 500 meters to go

This race is a exemple of strategy. When I saw this race in 1999, I replay several time the last lap only with eyes on OF.

As much as i dislike the guy for what he did, he was far from being the guy who started it as the whole peloton was using dope. All sorts of crap was being used and goign back as far as the 1920's or even earlier.
