Refreshing the tailgate carpet panel in my 1985 Toyota 4Runner. Not sure if this is an SR5 feature, but this carpeted panel sits over the rear window access opening in the tailgate.
It's attached with plastic screw inserts that fit into square holes in the tailgate sheet metal. Those inserts used to have barbs that held them in place, but those broke off years ago, leaving the inserts loose. I tried, unsuccessfully, gluing the nylon inserts into place.
I decided to use the same RivNut threaded inserts I'm using for the bed side panels as well as the rear bed trim. To install these, you need to slightly enlarge the square holes with either a letter M bit (0.302") or I found a stepped drill bit, when the 5/16" (8mm) step just dropped into the hole worked well. You do not want to drill the hole too large or the insert will not tighten up. If you do go too large, you'll need to go to the next larger size insert.
The sheet metal panel below the carpet panel uses a different size insert and those are harder to access as you need to pull up the plastic vapor barrier. I used some Super Glue to hold those back down along with the carpet panel pushing down from above.
