The hospitality comes from islamic culture and what ever is left in people after the damaging communist regime! It's like that in islamic countrys! Try reading the Quran in English translation you can find one on line for free! Good luck beautiful place and people! Note surroundingredients countries like Macedonia Montenegro parts of Greece were all parts of Albania before 1912 when Europe decided to chopp it up so you will find same people and hospitality in those country's as well!

Thank you, again. I didn't have screens in my windows at the place I stayed in Medellin. I still left the windows and patio door open. Do you kitchens have ovens? In Medellin, I didn't realize they didn't have an oven until Thanksgiving when I visited a friend who had an oven and thought I wanted to bake bread again. I couldn't find an oven. Not a common thing in Colombia. Do apartments have ovens in Albania?

yes they do ( thank goodness ) but its been really hot and it heats the house. April will make breakfast. But once you learn how to order here its so easy to eat out and afford it. we can eat a good meal for $7:00 - 8 bucks a piece. We splurge ever so often on special nights. But as it stands. Every night is date night!

@@patrickoverseas Cool. That's good to know. Don't use ovens often. That's why I didn't know it wasn't in there. I never looked until my friend cooked a turkey in his. At my home I only used my oven 1-2 times in the last 3 years and only when I had guests and needed to cook for more than 1. I have an air fryer, convection oven combo that works for most things, including baking bread.

First time in Albania rented a car at the airport and ended up driving through Tirana at night, with my now wife, a non driver at he time, navigating, good times, I tell people its a combination of nascar and rally racing, if your not comfortable going 50kmh clearing cars by 2 inches on either side, its not the place for you, I find its more a team effort to get everyone moving, than aggressive. You will notice the traffic lights are on the near side of the intersections, so the first cars can't really see them, the honking is to let people know the light changed, same with passing particularly on the right, to let you know they are there, not telling you to get out of the way, it's communication. Applying north american driving style makes it appear wildly erratic. Hospitality is the trademark of Albanians. A little language hint, Shume is similar to "much' or "many", so Shume mire - very good, shume falamenderit- thank you very much, it can be added after as well to express more of the same.

Driving can be stressful in Albania especially if you’re not comfortable driving. It is manageable but inside cities even for Albanians themselves is a challenge but we are building railways and roads so people will not jump immediately in cars and instead use public transport. But if you go out of tirana is much easier to drive although you always have to be aware of your surroundings.

@@user-irj1nxa3cof2z Yes, ive never minded driving there, some of the mountain roads i find more stressful, like the old road to Bulqiza on the mountain side and Llogara at night in the rain, the wife and I do tend to have adventures on road trips, she's from Kavaja area.. we rode the train from Elabasan to Durres and back, she hadn't been on it since she was young, we had a great time. The new high speed train will be nice but the old one is cool. Saw they are working on the tracks from Elbasan toward Pogradec last trip to Korce.

Hi Patrick, im an Albanian living in the US since i was a teen. In regard to fast food places I always tell folks here that when you go to europe, don't go to fast food places, because it won't be like here in the states. I remember when i visited London a couple of years ago, and i was curious to try McDonalds, and It was not good at all. USA has the best fast foods on earth period(very unhealthy lol) Now, when it comes to Albania, in the new Bazar (pazir i ri), I would recommend you to try qofte zgare or meatballs on a panini. These places are called "qebaptore" and these are the traditional kind of fastfood albanian places. In fact i believe that now that Albania qualified for Eurocup, you will see them being set up in the center of tirana. But in the last couple of years what has been very popular in Albania is agro tourism, farm to table places which you can find them all over albania.

The very first drive-thru here in Tirana is a KFC. However, BK and KFC are so-so and a bit expensive when you consider you can eat better for less. Like my wife says she understands the young kids here wanting the American fast food. The opening of Pizza Hut didn't make sense as the pizza in Albania is world class and I say that as a New Yorker. There is so many BK's in Tirana now it's shocking. I save my Fast food eating for when I'm traveling outside Albania as a fall back option or switch up. If you ever need your American fix for all things America just go to Dubai. 5 and half hours direct flight from Tirana. TFC - Tirana Fried Chicken is split with The Hip Hop Cafe. It's really just a restaurant. They do have friend chicken but not like you would think with a name like TFC. For Fast food in Albania after a while all these western options just fade away in your mind. You will opt for more of the Albanian diet. You will appreciate the quality of olives and olive oil here. You don't buy store bought olives or olive oil from the grocery store. You have to buy the fresh. It's life changing.
