What about single chord, compared to chain? Single cord does not have the disadvantage you mentioned (the pair twisting)

You should have mentioned looking at bearings when buying nunchucks because I have had several pair of them with crappy bearings break.

I was not aware that this was an issue because I have never had that problem with any of my nunchucks even though I have bought them from a variety of sources. However, thanks for letting me know and if you have any tips for choosing nunchucks with the right bearings let me know.

Linus Nunchaku you are going to want to look for bearings that cannot move around and are locked in place, some are able to wiggle around inside the top of the chuck and they gradually get looser. This gives room for the nunchuck to jerk on the bearings rather than keeping constant tension which will eventually blow out the bearing. However I have had loose bearings hold out for 2 years now if they are the right brand. If you see a pair that have loose bearings make sure they are Avec brand for best durability results. You can find the brand on the top of the bearing. I have also noticed one type of bearing that is not a "main brand" but still holds up, when you look at the top of these bearings you can see the bearing balls. In this type of bearing the balls are smaller that most bearings and there are more of them, 11 balls that sorround almost the entirety of the swivel part of the bearing. However, the most ideal chucks have the bearing securely fastened and do not allow movement. I have never had a pair of these blow out. I only brought this up because it is an extreme safety hazard. I myself have had the bearings of a wood pair break while doing upward figure 8s, the chuck that broke off then flew and broke a window. Hope this makes since, if you have an want email address and would like me to send pictures to better explain let me know. Thanks for your tutorials!!!

Yeah, I didn't really know what you were referring to, until today, when I was practicing, the bearing just popped right out on a wrist roll.

So, where can I buy nunchucks without loose bearings? I also feel as though this could be hazardous if I were doing something like a shoulder to shoulder spin.

The Zesty Potato. There are several websites that you can buy quality nunchucks on. My favorite is karatemart.com which has bearing and string nunchucks. If you are really concerned with safety string would be the way to go.

If you like the weight and balance of the nunchucks then they should be good and durable.

Metal is often weighted similarly to wooden nunchucks making them slightly more difficult to learn on but a good option. If you would like input on any specific pair of nunchucks or finding which pair is right for you feel free to contact me with additional information.
