This original version is more folkish than that of Roberta Flack with the accompaniment being based on an acoustic guitar. Lori's voice is higher-pitched and more fragile than Roberta's which fits the vulnerability. Roberta's version is smoother with the soulful/jazzy arrangement but also more controlled. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but you could argue that Lori's version sounds more like an insecure person looking up to someone while Roberta's version sounds more like someone letting something nice happen. Either way, both are great!

I like both versions too. Lori sounds more inexperienced younger lady to me. Roberta sounds more like a mature lady who has lived life. I think Lori should have changed her last name, just like Linda Ronstadt hid she was Mexican, Lori should have hid her being Jewish. I think ethnicities are usually hidden by white singers by changing their name like Carol King and Janis Ian.

Zdravím Vás. Možná jste to nevěděla ale tato písnička od Lori je její původní a nádherná. Roberta Flack ji převzala v 73 a už to nebylo vono. K Lori se tapísnička prostě hodila.

I had no idea this song was a remake. Oh wow. With the lyrics and chord progressions it kind of makes sense that it would be a more 70s type folk/rock ballad.

A friend who, knew Charlie and Norman, a few weeks before the Roberta Flack version came out, played a demo tape of this song for me. I immediately loved her version and have never changed my mind. He told me the story of her reaction to Don McLean. At that time I hardly knew who Don McLean was. Great story and 100% true.

This is a great backstory. I've never heard this original version until now. I love it too, and not to diminish anything from Roberta's voice, and version, but Lori Lieberman certainly had a beautiful voice and obvious potential. What happened to her, and what else did she write? Honestly, I think this would've been a hit, and wondering why it wasn't produced and released? Also, did you pursue a career in the recording industry?
@tylercohen5895

this story doesn't add up-- A few weeks before Roberta's record came out would be February 1973. Lori's single was in stores February 1972. Roberta heard it on an airplane in 1972. So why did the guy play you a demo? And, why would a composer give demos of his songs out to friends when the actual versions were in the store and on the radio. That's not a real story. And that's not a real name either.

@@davidwolfson7060 KMS was the single released off Lori's self-titled debut album in 1972 for Capitol. It was well reviewed, she did talk shows and toured and gained a small faithful audience-- mostly in Europe. The same writers wrote and produced 3 more albums for her (all for Capitol), plus a "best of Lori" album mostly for her following in Europe. The material was great and well covered by other artists. "And the Feelings Good" became successful for Roberta Flack, Jose Feliciano Sarah Vaughn and later Lauryn Hill... "Becoming" was recorded by Maureen McGovern. Jack Jones recorded "It Didn't Come Easy". Not many artists get to make 5 albums on a major label and Lori did. The sales just weren't there for her.

Both versions are great but I actually prefer Lori's. It reflects the time it was recorded perfectly. She has echoes of Joan Baez in her voice who was the goddess of folk at that time. What a beautiful young woman Ms Lieberman was.

This is my 1st time listening to this Original record as I've grown up with mainly the Fugees/Lauryn Hill version. I've listened to the Roberta Flack version too. All versions are good in their own way with the original being more like a country/folk song, Flack's version is more smooth Jazz and Fugees with Lauryn Hill gives it more life with a Hip-Hop beat. It's hard to say which version is the best as they ALL have their unique style. Great and Well Done! 😀

It is similar to the transition Joni Mitchell went through between her album Blue which was still rooted in her early Folk days and Court and Spark which was more of a jazzy, soulful Pop thing.

Allow me to make a personal comment as a listener to Lori's music since 1975, and the album entitled "Lori Lieberman", and I refer to a specific song "Time For Me To Go" (Fox/Gimbel).. Why is there no current access. online, to this beautiful song by Lori? I suppose it has to do with Money, right? Well, here is where I am smarter than the money hoarders, I have an LP copy of "Lori Lieberman" the album and I am making a digital version of "Time For Me To Go" and "My Lover Do You Know" for my own personal use! I have beaten the Money people who have prevented the distribution of wonderful Lori music.

She denied that the song was created in that manner. In an interview, she explained that this story was made up for her even though she herself had told it numerous times in public. As a young girl, she had severe stage fright, so they invented this story to introduce the song and reduce her nervousness. According to an interview from a few years ago, the man who came up with this story about how the song was created accused her of being a liar, which she found very difficult to bear. He did this for fame and money, as he was one of the co-authors along with Lori; however, even though Lori was empowered again, he did not succeed in his malicious intentions.

It’s pretty but not as fully actualized as when the Black ladies sing it. There’s something too precious and earnest bout this version.
