I’d love to know what opening lines are better than “a screaming comes across the sky”. I’ve found ones that could be argued to be on part with it, but they lack something or the other. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” Is evocative and perennial but it’s lacks the imagery and abstract beauty that GR has. Anyway, it’s hard to talk about the whole book but the first line does sum up why I love GR and why I find it so much better than other lit

This is a joke: Rian Johnson is not only a fan of Thomas Pynchon, but he has also almost definitely read “Gravity’s Rainbow” at least once. I’ve read it a few times & each time it’s still hilarious, but also both more wise & yet more bleak than the last time. The ending can be terrifying, especially now when people don’t find the opening or ending so impactful…because that contemporary “nonchalance” just underscores how we are still living under the Bomb, and yet somehow people just live with that now, where it’s so normal to live this way, that modern readers don’t “get” a lot of the book’s anger about that, beginning with the first sentence. It is still one of the angriest books about American racism ever written by a white guy.
