A nice, drama free breakdown of what's involved in a 1x switch. I would like to point out that not all riders are going to find the cassette bodges necessary. I was riding 2x10 on 26" a few years ago (36,22/11-34) and I switched to 30/11-34, (I was early enough into the cassette life that I only had to swap the front ring and the chain.) With that swap I lost two low gears that were unusable, (at my low level of fitness, it is easier to pedal squares in a slightly higher gear than spin a 17 gear inch to 19 gear inch low ratio at the rpm needed to avoid falling over,) and one gear up top that I only used downhill, (Once again, at my low level of fitness, I'm not realistically pushing 82 gear inches on flat ground with high volume mtb tires.) For the price of a NW ring, a new chain and a little effort, I got linear shifting and a front ring that is much easier to clean. Every rider's riding style, fitness level, and wheel size will affect this, so doing the math and being honest about what gears you will use can help avoid a lot of heartache, (And yes, that might mean sticking with 2x for some riders.) I personally love 1x so much that I even converted my road bike to 1x10, (But 1x road is a whole different kettle of fish.)

The bike industry is pretty clever. Club riders used to ride hilly 100 mile days fixed or single speed, and when Sturmey Archer brought out the 3 speed hub gear, club riders demanded (and got) a close-ratio version and a non-coasting version! Then the industry started to sell 5 speeds (1 x 5) to us as "necessary". Then the industry brought in "10 speed" which was 2 x 5, but with the front chainwheels being 52/48 (hardly any difference) and the rear cog was 12-24t. (Yes, "chainwheels" because detachable chainrings were not available.) Imagine our surprise and delight when they brought out "15 speed" (3 x 5) and "wide ratio blocks" that went "all the way up" to 28t! Then a friend bought a 12 (2 x 6) and it was amazing. Now my wife's bike has 2 x 9 and the shift levers alone would cost £200, and one of my bikes has 2 x 10. And after all that the cycle industry is selling us special parts to convert us to the next big fashion of "1 x drivetrains" which is where we started. Meanwhile, I have as much fun riding cross country on my fixie as I do on anything else.

I do most of my mileage on a trekking/touring bike, and when I travel longer distances, I usually travel pretty heavy with all my camping gear. The 26/36/48 didn't cut it for me and I don't see the point in that gearing. Even after switching to a MTB crankset with 22/32/44, I'm not using the two small rear cogs (which would require 20+ miles per hour) at all, but I'm definitely using the low end when the going gets tough, especially near the end of a long day in the saddle. Ditching the 26/36/48 was one of the best decisions I've made for that bike.

Repeat sequence for each subsequent climb and decent. Simple!

Hub space for cassette is limited, so it will limit maximum number of sprockets in the back. With more sprockets, the cog pitch will become thinner and thinner until it reaches a hard limit and the chain will become progressively thinner as well. Will there be a future with 22 sprockets, I highly doubt it; anyways, there is no practical reason to have so many gear ratios.

In 1986 ordered the first Cannondale mtn bike they made - the SM600 w/180mm cranks. I'd never give up my triples w/180mm cranks. To take the small chainring away from a mtn bike seems stupid to me. Same with going to shorter cranks with less leverage. I don't like a lot of chain crossover like a 1x has. Back in the day, you learned your gear inches from a chart and got the right combo freewheel for your personal needs, that also avoids too many duplicate ratios. Sometimes a tooth or two here and there makes all the difference to efficient riding. You can tape a little gear chart on the bars to show the shift sequence. Learn to double shift when necessary and enjoy always being in the right gear and your rpms 80-100. If you low-rpm mash gears, you'll wear out the cartilage on your knees/patellas.

I just sacrifice pedaling fast downhill and scale my 1x towards the lower end. I can't imagine needing lower than what Calvin's got there - a 32T chainiring and a 42T big cog? Unless you're towing a lot of cargo, it seems unnecessary for most people. I find having a 36T chainring and a 40t big cog plenty low enough for me to carry my work laptop, gear, a change of clothes and shoes, all of which weighs ~15-20 lbs. At 95 RPM cadence with a 36-11 ratio, I'm going 25 MPH on flat ground, which is plenty for a commute. Most people aren't racers. They'll save their knees and their headaches by gearing down and spinning fast.

@NonLegitNation2

Not really, I converted my 3x to a 1x and all i did was just install the 1x chainring. As long as the 1x chainring is smaller then the biggest chainring from your 3x then you don't have to worry about purchasing a new chain, unless you decide to go crazy like they did and add the extra huge cog in the back, most people don't bother with that, I know i didn't. So in the end it literally cost me $15.00 which was the cost of the new chain ring and included chainring bolts.
@saintless
2 жыл бұрын
@@NonLegitNation2 the problem with your cheap conversion is that you don't actually gain anything but you lose range. 1x makes sense for 11/12 speed, throw on a narrow/wide ring, a clutch RD, etc. You keep the range that way, don't create gaps, minimize chain slap. What you did, however, is give up the advantages of 3x without gaining any of the advantages of 1x... you just gimped your bike. And that's fine, if you only need that more limited range. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 1x full suspension MTB new but there's no reason to gimp my bikes and lose range just to chase a trend.

I'd love to switch to a SRAM Eagle GX, but I'd love it even more if Pinion made it so their P1.12 gearbox could be retrofitted to existing frames. Component compatibility is the way to win markets. Having to get an entire new frame just to get a particular drivetrain is just not in the cards for most people. I'm sure the Pinion would already be far more common if it could be slapped on existing frames. Hell, I'd be busy trying to convince my wife that I need one.

I haven't tried it out yet, but my hopes are there. I used a 2x10 with 26/38 and 11-34(I know, I know, should've go with the 11-36, but still), and once you are really "offroad, there is no use of the 38, unless you are an animal, or descending. *I do find the 10-42 cassette very interesting from SRAM, but that;s another story or another hub system... 4. Without too much theory, I can find myself(a non professional rider) on a long trail, tired and lacking power in my legs, so maybe having 26 on the front with 40 on the back si better than 32 on the front and 42 on the back. And i you find this good enough, think about the opposite, when you really need to pedal, but you remember you have only 32 on the front and 11 or 10 in the back. Try to remember that 3x system you certainly had, and how much did you use the middle chainring, the 32, and at what speed you felt like you need to shift up or down with the FD? Anyhow, Even on 3x11, anybody must try(including myself) an electronic shifter at some point. Happy trails!

Why sacrifice the range of options? I love to gear up on the big ring and use the free power to recover on easier sections of trail and then be rested for the hard stuff. A really long travel full suspension could be an exception to keep the chain from slapping the shit out of your frame, though.

I am considering to convert my 3x9 (36t) to 1x9 (46t). How do you work out a similar gear ratio for the chain ring or are you able to advice on the chain ring (32, 34, 36 or 38). Looking forward to your advice. Thanks Kel.

You need to remove the front derailleur, cable, shifter etc. Good look if these are integrated with your brake levers. Then you need to replace the 3xchain ring with the 1xchain ring. The 1xchain ring is almost like the 2nd chain ring on the 3x setup. So maybe you could drill out the 1 & 3 chain rings, then you need to add the rear cog to your cassette and make the chain longer. This basically what you need to do. Frankly I would not go to all this trouble, the 3x setup is extremely good for uphills. This is a known fact

I think people confuse having lots of choice with having the right choices. The more you generalize, the better for more things, at the cost of optimum for some things. Its no different than my race car - gear for the track you are going to run, not any possible track. For my typical riding environment, I went 1x 15 years ago and happier for it. Tempted to do the same for my road bike as I have very few hills here - even on 2x, I changed both cassette and front chainrings to best match my ability to produce power and the terrain I ride on...

I Don't Know I Am Novice Or Intermediate In MTB World But My Opinion Is 1x Better Than 2x or 3x But I Think 3x Useless Because With 3x Making You Confuse "Now What's My Speed Now"? 2x Little Bit Making Confuse, 1x Never Making Confuse and Avoid The Crosschain. I Love 1x

I converted from a two by to a one by and used the same front chainring. The chain now jumps off, would it be worth getting a narrow wide chainring and do u think this would help

A narrow wide front chainring would definitely help you in this situation.

1x11 all the way only cause 12x wouldn't fit on my free hub but a vast improvement on the trails but your fitness needs to be there for steep climbs 💪🏻
