Had box rear facing obviously , about a 30⁰ incline firing right the lower part of the window in the hatchback. It was stupid loud. You couldnt have it playing without cracking a window or the sunroof. Pressure would want your ear drums to do things they aren't supposed to do. But yeah, wasnt anything crazy, the W7s weren't even a thing yet.

from what i seen 20 years ago with old school power Rockford subs alot of people ran there subs facing tords the back of trunk but then when we use to go to the bass comps we would turn the box around and take Buggie strap so the trunk would just be open like 3 inches and it was louder

@gypsy6211

Depends on the car. Every frequency has a distance, a 30Hz wave is 37' long, so if the inside of the car is short, turning the sub around makes the travel longer and you end up with a cleaner hit that's not distorted by the next wave. Which equals louder. It's also why popping the trunk can help, too much pressure inside the car will dampen the subs ability to hit, you basically turn the car into a bandpass with no port.
@imthirstyh2o330

The reason it plays louder open is because it’s not sealed off. The open trunk allows the bass waves to escape so they don’t cause cancelation.

Let me chime in on this subject since I have about 30 years experience with trunk builds and car audio. The reason why it's not as loud with subs facing forward in trunk cars is because of cancellation. The inherent problem with trunk cars is that the trunk acts like a secondary enclosure, the front waves intersect with the rear waves and "cancel" each other out. I don't know the exact science behind it, but all I know is that this has been my experience. Maybe somebody more knowledgeable can chime on the physics of it. When you open the trunk it lets the "cancellation waves" escape and make it sound like it would in a hatchback or SUV. Only problem is you can't drive around with your trunk open. So, to not get any cancellation in a trunk build, the subs need to face back or the box needs to be as far back to the rear as possible, this is the common way. But, the main problem is that you are now pressurizing the crap out of the trunk! Not to mention it sounds like a rattling piece of mess, unless you sound deaden it properly. But still, most of your output will be in the trunk and not the interior, hence the reason why they build walls. So the way around this is you have to SEAL off the trunk from the interior! In my opinion this the only and best way to do a trunk build. This is what I have done with my 4th order build with port through the center armrest and there is little to no output or sound difference whether trunk is open or closed. That's how I know it's sealed off properly. I'm getting most of my SPL in the interior, not to mention much deeper and louder bass. Now I can't stop my doors, windshield and roof from flexing way more than it should for having only a 3K. Plus it sounds clean as hell on the outside, no annoying rattle or anything! So by taking this extra step and effort, you now have a trunk build with the benefits of a hatchback or SUV but in a smaller space. If you have a trunk car, take the extra step to do this, it will be worth your time and you can still sit 5 people in your car 🤙
