I honestly do like this channel (he made a sick 5-hour long vid about FMA, though he did misunderstand the story a bit and had some bad takes tbf). This new AOT vid from him is not it though.

Recently discovered your channel, but I have to step in as an EM apologist as well, because I feel like their dynamic is so commonly misunderstoond and a lot of the criticisms strike me as being derived from the lack of a very explicit conversational couple dynamic, which subjectively I do understand (I mean, we typically like romance drama because of that reason) but when there's objective claims being so casually thrown around, I tend to get a little frustrated. Not going to yap too much, but a common theme in AoT that's presented with their dynamic (and through their characterisation) is the juxtaposition of cruelty and beauty, which exists in pretty much all major pivotal points in their relationship as it relates to the grander story (Eren saving Mikasa, their scene in S2 finale, Mikasa's own concerns about Eren and their almost confession as juxtaposed by the horror of the Rumbling, which by the way is so literal in the manga as it happens right there and then more so than the anime which shifted the chapters around). And the way they've internalized the cruelty of the world and life informs their actions and outlook in the world. We know however that they are diametrically opposed in this manner, as while Mikasa focuses on grounded and relatable ideas such as home, warmth of loved ones, the beauty that Eren represents for her etc, Eren is the complete opposite, he's stuck on his twisted desires and his emotional response to the cruelty of the world as he understands it and is disappointed by. It is why they can never truly be together, and it's something that Mikasa slowly has to come to terms with, as much as it pains her. This is something that pretty much gets an entire episode dedicated to and is implicit time and time again, and it is why the criticism of "they were never a couple, bad writing" can be easily thrown out of the window for example. As far as Eren himself goes, there's a few things I feel I need to mention. First, you make a good point about the analogy to Zeke and Grisha. Secondly, there's a common thread in the story about Eren's insecurities over Mikasa and in particular why she's so protective of him, which is why in the first season he gets pissed at her for this so often, because he doesn't like the idea that Mikasa cares about him/protects him because of some life-debt or some platonic reason, and ideally he would like to protect her for once because he does really care about her. This sort of idea culminates initially in S2, where both at the first and final episode it's reiterated via the flashback to his mom telling him that he needs to protect Mikasa (actually I'm not sure if it's the same exact flashback, too bored to check, but pretty sure it's more or less the same idea being repeated), where through Mikasa's confession of her feelings he truly does understand Mikasa deeply and genuinely loves him. I personally do believe she was going in for a kiss, but Eren "rejecting" it is not really a rejection of his love, if anything it's a reaffirmation the way I see it: it's the moment of acknowledgement of what he means for her and his promise that he'll continually fulfil that for her, and culturally I guess some of this importance is probably lost between Japanese and Western people, as I understand it this is just a flat out love confession between the two in Japanese culture but could be wrong. If it's rejecting anything, it's rejecting Mikasa's succumbing to death and despair in that moment, and him trying to fight to save her and his life. And this is a turning point, as Eren does soften up to Mikasa generally speaking after this for any scenes in S3 whenever she's touching him or being protective of him. Unfortunately though, there's no time for this relationship to blossom as the basement reveal happens and Eren especially is wrapped up so much in whatever is going to happen, and the thing I want to focus on here is his self-loathing which is prominent post time-skip even more so than any point before. Because of this self-loathing this idea of "why does Mikasa care for me so much" is again repeated/brought up when Eren asks Zeke about it, he just cannot believe that someone could genuinely love a piece of shit like him. He asks her directly himself as well earlier in the story for the same reasons. Where am I going with this incoherent rambling? The point is that this is the story's subtle way of expressing Eren's strong emotions for Mikasa, considering he never goes through this mental process for anyone else in the story as far as we can tell, and it seems unusual for someone to do purely for platonic reasons. It's also in-line with Eren's overall "fake" masculinity (I mean he definitely embodies stereotypical macho man characteristics at times but he's obviously not at the same time) and dense nature, as everyone agrees he's not the type of person who would be explicitly all lovey-dovey with someone. And as you rightly point out as well, that all comes out right at the end when he's talking to his best friend in a very explicit and pathetic manner, which is in character for Eren, as he's known to let his emotions out in outbursts when his sadness and regrets about a situation reach boiling points.

Wow exceptional comment. Thank you for watching my videos. I love that you brought up the self loathing. That’s a wonderful aspect of the story I forgot. This actually inspired me to make a short about it which I will do shortly. I do many EM videos and Mikasa videos on this channel so please check them out! Thanks again
