This video shows two beavers that stopped to groom, their fur not far from where I was watching on shore. it’s always very special to get a close-up look at these wonderful creatures while they’re doing their grooming behaviour.
Beavers have to groom several times a day to spread oil through their fur to stay waterproof. Beavers will sit on their tails to access oils through their cloacas. In addition, anal glands secrete oil through skin pores to hair roots. From there it is distributed with the front feet, teeth and grooming claws over the whole body to keep the fur sleek, oily, and water-repellent. They groom each other to work oils around in the hard to reach areas.
