Make sure you apply a liberal amount of dissolved salt or vinegar to the rug before washing it so the colors don't run where the dog urinated on it. My father recommends adding vinegar to the soap mixtures, so it's a two in one shot. I personally have never used the vinegar, but that's what he said.

You are so like me! That's how I do the rugs too. I' am stokes. Check this story out. I lived in Isfahan, Iran for a year before the Shah was removed. When going to the Barraza to shop, I would see Iranian women in the chadors [total cover ups], walking into traffic, [scary] because Allah would protect them, and lay down their Persian rugs. The cars and trucks would run over them to loosen the filth. Then they would pull rugs to the "jube', a drain ditch. As long as the water is flowing is is pure....Then drag the rugs onto the rocks by the side of the road to dry, roll them up and take them home. Their husbands never helped them. They would also do their dishes in the "jube" with pink latex gloves, no less, and even thought Saheb was shitting upstream, the water was flowing, so it is OK. Horrifying. 1st cause of death there was intestinal diseases. Glad I was evacuated!

Very clever and useful. A few years ago, my husband paid thousands of dollars to ship and clean a very large Persian rug and it still smelled like urine when he got it back. I'm going to try your technique this time.
@takjensen
6 жыл бұрын
Frustrating they didn't have a guarantee. Urine was always difficult, even for my father to get out. He'd go through the cleaning process 3-4 times using conventional methods. If it's already been treated, I assume the colors didn't run - urine will take the mordant out of dyes and cause them to run or fade. He always recommended applying white vinegar before starting the washing process. You might do that just incase. You'll need to get the soapy water and vinegar all the way through the rug for the best results. I've seen people use baths to totally soak the rug, or suction machines that suck the water all the way through the rug (top to bottom). I hope it's a smaller rug, because back surgery is probably more expensive than a professional cleaning with a guarantee. You might check out Pet Pee Pee. I'm not sure what they charge. But depending on the size of the rug.... it may be worth the look. They're guaranteed. Honestly, soap alone may not do the trick getting the odor out. Let me ask my father if he remembers what he used for odor. He's been retired for over 20 years and has forgotten a lot, as he's starting to go senile. But, you never know until you try.

You are so funny! I love that about your video, too. We did send the rug back. Unfortunately, as you predicted, the urine caused the red dye to become unstable, and it bled into the lighter sections, and this was a professional rug cleaner doing the job. If I use your technique on a rug that has urine on it and it bleeds, is there a way to get the dye out before it dries?
@takjensen
6 жыл бұрын
That's bad. I asked my dad about it, and he literally said, "My memory is not that good anymore, Tak____. What you can do, you can call my brother Jack." Jack retired many years ago as well. My father used to take rugs from other dealers to fix them after the dealer had messed it up - 20 years ago. He couldn't remember the name of the chemical he used, but there is something that can be done to remove most of the bleeding, if not all, then they go through stabilizing the colors again. If he could help fix it and his brother could, I'm sure there's somebody out there who still knows how to fix bleeding - that was in So.Cal. Really, they should have used either vinegar or salt to begin with. 30 years ago, my uncle charge $5/sq' to fix bleeding. I have no idea what the prices would be now, you have to figure if the value of the rug is worth it. If you have another rug that gets peed on, you put the vinegar on, then the soap and water solution and clean it like you normally would. Letting the vinegar sit a little wouldn't hurt anything, give it just a couple of minutes to set the colors again; my father said they shouldn't. And, my dad really recommends vacuuming the water out of the rug, not the scrape and fan dry method that I used in this video.
@takjensen
6 жыл бұрын
Well, I finally got a reply from my older brother. You'll need to take it to a professional, to my understanding, since they go through special regulations to carry and use such chemicals. My brother said: We used an awful sulphur chemical that was quite toxic. I can't remember it's name, but you had to mix it hot and apply it hot. Then quickly dilute it with cold water, and vacuum it out.

I’m definitely gonna give this a go when I can talk my back into it. I have a rug my father brought back from Afghanistan that my dogs and cat loved! 🙄 So it’s been hanging in the garage since a move. I’m not sure what exactly it’s made of but I figured this would be a safe route to clean on. After reading some remarks I saw the white vinegar for urine pretreat. Do you recommend dousing it and thoroughly rinsing it and then can I go straight in with the wash?
@takjensen
5 жыл бұрын
My father was pretty cavalier about it, saying to put it with the soap. With urine however, I would do a pre-rinse with vinegar, then after several minutes go into the wash. I've also heard that sea salt diluted in water, which also keeps colors safe, is a really good pre-rinse. You will be using a lot of water. Probably more with salt than with vinegar. My condolences to your back!!

takjensen The main issue is how to dry it. Here in Florida, we have to be on guard to move it inside fast when it is about to rain. Also, pollen is another issue. In arid regions, it dries out when you hang the rug from balcony for a couple of days. What is your solution?
@takjensen
6 жыл бұрын
I'm also in a humid environment where we have heavy rainfall, not quite as much as FL. The day of this video, I pushed out what water out I could, then draped the over a saw horse in my garage - you could drape a rug over a large pvc pipe, 2x4 piece of wood, etc. Depends on the size/weight of the rug, really. I then put a fan blowing on it until the next day when it had stopped raining and I could take it outside to finish drying in the sun. If you have a longer rainy spell and you washed your rug anyway (don't do that if possible), you could fan dry it, even with high humidity, but expect it to take at least 2-3 days. The larger the fan the better, the more fans you have, all the better. Make sure you rotate the rug so the fan(s) blow on the back of the rug as well as the front. If you can tolerate the smell of wet wool, you could bring it inside to dry it because most AC units also have dehumidifiers, so your house should have lower humidity than your garage.
@ArashFahim
6 жыл бұрын
I eventually tested this method on a cheap rug. My problem is that it rains EVERY F**Kin' day in FL. So, I moved it inside with a ceiling fan, AC and dehumidifier.

I put my dirty carpet at the hanging bar first under shade area. Therefore once I started hose the water, it will drip down and bring all of the dirt out from the rug. For scrubbing, just scrub from top to bottom (downward movement repeatedly). Finishing will be easy and once the water clear, just leave it to dry .
@takjensen
6 жыл бұрын
This is great idea for machine made carpets, but weavers tie the knots going one direction, just make sure you have the water running the same direction as the yarn (running with the pile, not against). Keeping the yarn laying flat helps protect the rug from pests like moths, it will also keep it cleaner in the long run. Again, that's for handmade carpets. Machine made are a different matter.

Conditioner will probably cause it to hold dirt more easily. The reason my father use dish soap was because it cuts grease and dirt clings to grease. Conditioner is designed to add grease and other "moisturizers" that will then attract dirt more easily.

Want your rug to look good all the time, wash your driveway and garage floor, everything you walk over on the way into the house is tracked in from outside, if your driveway sidewalks and garage floor are badly soiled and with ashes from smoking as well as pop spills or anything else its going to make it that much harder to keep the house clean. Think of the outside of your home as a place to clean off your shoes of the soil from the day. You wouldn't want to track mud into the house now would you?
@takjensen
6 жыл бұрын
It's easier to clean off the rug once a year, than to clean off the driveway 20 times a year, which is what it would take in my area, bare minimum. Besides, life happens when you have 5 kids. Even with them taking their shoes off when they come into the house, there's potty training, vomiting, snacks they sneak out of the kitchen, craft projects, you name it.

Hi , from Liverpool England. Can you help ...or suggest anything My friend washed her rug and her daughter folded it . And now it's creased and has ripples in . How's the best to remove them ? And dry a rug ?
@takjensen
4 жыл бұрын
Depends on several factors: thickness of the rug, material, how long it was left folded, did it dry folded, etc.. You could use steam to loosen the fibers or if it's really bad, you'll need to rewash it. Try to vacuum out the water, or scrape out the excess water. Leave the rug flat in the sun on a driveway/sidewalk. If you don't have an area like that, you could hang it on a wide pipe, piece of wood, fence, etc in the sun. If the thing you drape the rug on to dry is too thin, it'll be like folding it to let it dry; the fibers will dry in that direction and be stiff until you walk on it and loosen it. If it is dry, then you could also try walking on it to loosen up the crease.

That's a great idea for a dry climate. At the time we were living in a subtropical environment and there's was a good chance for random rain showers that would just keep the rug wet. You could hang it inside your house/apartment, but you'd have to be okay with the stench of wet wool.
@Spooms1961

I would never use a rough brush on my very expensive rugs. I use a towel bunched up to gently massage the very mild wool wash into the pile. Rinse well with a hose and roll a piece of pipe that I have spare just for this job to squeeze the excess water out. Then dry, draped over an outdoor table. No rubbing, no hard squeegee use.
@takjensen
6 жыл бұрын
That's an acceptable method, with a thorough rinse. Just know that any time you take it to a commercial cleaner they are going to use a brush on it, probably rotary, which is a lot rougher on the rug than my hand scrubbing. On rarer occasions, some commercial cleaners use large, industrial washers for a tumble clean - My father wasn't impressed with the quality of the cleaning when he was telling me about it. The truth is, good rugs are very tough - good rugs, not Moroccan Berbers or machine made junk. To break up the stiffness of the rugs after weaving them in the Middle East, people have put their rug out on the road and let them get run over by cars. The rug in the video is at least 80 years old. With that treatment, your grandkids will be leaving it to their grandkids.

I've never tired it and never heard of anybody using it. Since it's known to irritate skin, I very seriously doubt it would be good for the natural fibers or dyes in hand woven area rugs (i.e. cotton, wool and silk rugs). On a carpet made out of polyester... I've heard of people using it as a powder on carpet to remove pet odor, but not as a shampoo. In short, I would never use it on the rug you see in this video or a rug like it.

Having thought about it, just wanted to mention that you can spot clean a rug with the same diluted soap, or even just water. You would want to have a towel or shop vac nearby, and you wouldn't soak the rug - obviously. You would just do a surface cleaning to get any spots off. Could cut down the cost of taking it to the cleaner for a deep cleaning. I spot clean often so I don't have to bother dragging the whole rug out to clean. Sometimes I just wet a rag and rub a spot out until I get around to doing a deep cleaning.

Don’t put soap or foams in carpet, without proper suction power above 200 psi will not properly pull the soap residue out leaving film and soap in your carpet, soap acts like a magnet so when you step on that area with dirt it sticks to your carpet. Professional cleaning is recommend for a reason they wouldn’t put it on the rugs for no reason...

My father was a very well respected cleaner, the go to man for bad stains and bleeding, and he used soap (specifically Ivory dish soap or sometimes Woolite) every time. Of course, if I were a professional rug cleaner I may not want people to know how easy it is to wash their own rugs. But, I'm a mom with 6 kids living on a tight budget. Truth is, professional cleaners will ALWAYS have work because the rugs are huge and heavy and the physical work is taxing. There will always be people willing to pay to have that work done for them. For those who can't afford it, this works. Rinse well! And if needed, rinse and repeat.

takjensen in all honesty that’s not really true half of the products from your top cleaning professionals aren’t a rip off if you use them correctly plus you also have to consider your carpet and also understand stains can’t be removed because if they do get removed it’s a spot not a stain. Lol stains are permanent dye in carpet. Including bleach. Use it by all means use the other stuff it’s not environmentally safe for you, your children, or your pets. I’m just a professional carpet cleaner who has a company doing years of research for safe chemicals that are in the standard for Asthma Allergy Foundation of America. But I understand money’s tight do what you gotta do I’m not saying professionals are they way to go but if you can afford a expensive ass rug then don’t see why you can’t get it properly cleaned once in a while beings your a mother of 6 I’d assume your children’s safety along with your own would be more important but I’m just a dumb carpet cleaner sorry I put my opinion out there I’ll choose not to next time. Your English is fine! I understand what you said. I think I would rather have it go to the grass and be filtered some than have I go directly into the ocean to affect that environment. Where I live, we're not allowed to grow any food crops in our front yards either way. I am more careful with the land at the back of my house, where I have some fruit trees and a garden. There are good biodegradable soaps that can be used, and environmentally conscious people should definitely take that route. I've never heard of anybody using something like a castile soap on a natural fiber rug, but I suppose it could be tried. I could speak to the results. Could be good or bad. BTW, it's never affected my grass. So, no worries.

Dish soap is used to get bugs off your garden plants; so I don't think it is a problem.

What does gravity have to do with a slanted driveway?

You want the water to run in the same direction as the pile, so the face of the rug stays smooth. That means on a hill, or slant, you need to face the pile down hill. If I don't explain what pile is in the video, look at my rug tips video.
