People really go to other countries full of entitlement and attitude. They shouldn't even be entertained, just put on the next flight home. How can you tell a foreign country's customs officer that you don't have to answer them? 🙄

The right to nit answer questions is fundamental in almost all parts of the world, let alone a full democratic country like Australia. @@KingsmanKnight A right to silence is universally only about about criminal matters. And in this series they have "read your rights" with regards to remaining silent and using anything said as evidence in a criminal proceeding. However, there are no particular rights with civil matters at an entry point. Customs and other officers can search baggage (of citizens and foreign visitors) without permission or warrant. They are not obligated to allow foreign visitors into their country. For such entry, remaining silent can be used against someone if they don't answer questions to the satisfaction of an officer. Obviously the consequences can't be criminal for simply not answering questions, but they can include the civil matter of of denial of entry and removal from their country.

It varies. It's my understanding that the airline that sent someone in can be fined for transporting an ineligible international passenger. I believe they typically attempt to bill the passenger later, although paying up isn't a given.

Although some perishable goods might be destroyed, you won't be fined or barred from entry and you may even be surprised what they do allow in. The lesson here is: don't you ever DARE to go to Australia and not have an itemised itinerary for every second of your visit there. If you're the type of person who doesn't make plans (and goodness knows there are lots of us) this is one occasion where you must make plans. Write it all down, minute by minute, including bathroom breaks, so that immigration doesn't get a "feeling" that they should interview you and search all your baggage. Also, don't you dare be anxious or even tired (which they might mistake for being anxious) after what might have been a 24 hour journey. Oh no. Don't be irritable If you get dragged to one side, nor must you be worried and show it, about why they are searching your luggage for no apparent reason. Nor must you ask any questions because that's suspicious. Also, you should not be nonchalant either. Don't look too relaxed because that's suspicious as well. Plus, if you don't speak English or your English is poor, that's tough luck. They will still continue to talk to you as if you are a native English speaker while they are searching your luggage and if you don't understand what they are saying, be prepared for them to be suspicious that you are carrying something you should not. Expect to be taken into a room where they will finally get an interpreter on the phone.
