We recently had the opportunity to visit with our friend Juan Barragan, who we first met when he was building the Payne’s Valley course at Big Cedar Lodge in Missouri. Florida is a booming market for golf course construction and the east coast of the state seems to be leading the way with a handful of projects in a concentrated area near Hobe Sound. Juan’s team is just breaking ground on a massive project called The Ranch and we had the opportunity to visit him and drive the property. Of course, what was most striking to us was the soil! We expected a light sandy soil and that was exactly what we found. In this clip we look at some soil on the property. We found that by digging down only a few inches the soil has some complexity. The soil changes from a fairly rich humified soil to what is a copper looking profile that may be holding some sulfur, and if we were to go a few feet deeper we would hit water. Soil tests have been pulled to help quantify the soil chemistry which will allow Juan identify the appropriate amendments to apply before grass is planted. When visiting a site of this magnitude it is truly overwhelming to imagine what this property will look like in only a years’ time. We will be back!
