Remember on the PS2 when there were so many good games and so much variety you couldn’t keep up. Now it’s the opposite. Everything now has to be RE4 remake, GTA 5, Dark Souls and that’s it. Those 3 - when streamers are playing them it’s mainstream. Can you imagine a streamer playing Parappa The Rapper 2? They’d probably have more enjoyment and remember it forever. Lol

Even a game as unique as bully would never be made by rockstar today, if we wanna remain on the "gta" formula.

@@Dami19XX you need to include manhunt as well. Another rockstar gem.

Yep that too. Gta was insanely successful but they still tried to create more than just that.

I thought Renderware from back in the day, which was used for many 6th generation games, had more variety than the UE4 and 5 stuff now.

I was allergic to that engine because the sonic games made with it looked horrible. Although when used well like in the case of burnout 3 and black I think? It looked pretty good. And yes games made with it looked more distinct.

@@Dami19XX I’ll agree with you Heroes and Shadow don’t look very good, I’d say they kind of look like they’re wrapped in saran wrap or plastic.

Yes, despite moving more polygons, they looked worse than DC native games. The shiny effect was just the cherry on top. Plus the devs couldn't replicate the intricacies of how the characters moved in sa1 and 2, so they control not that good

The unfortunate thing is these games often sell well especially if the gameplay is good enough for mainstream audiences to enjoy and so many people prefer realistic graphics over stylization variety we can see it in games like Hogwarts Legacy, Elden Ring and Black Myth selling over 10,000,000 copies especially with great marketing and known ip/studio everyone in the world loves. Other games and genres that isn't chasing trends rarely sells great cause people aren't interested in an unrealistic graphical style and gameplay unless it's a Nintendo game or an indie game that they'll enjoy for a few sessions. Modern mainstream games are now meant to appeal to a wide audience rather than a niece one to sell as many copies as possible and to make as big of profits as possible due to "Games being expensive to develop now" so it's either they play it safe but go big on realistic graphics and chase trends or go home that's the reality of modern games.

It is just that publishers have decided that they are not going to engage in smaller sized projects. There is still the possibility to make a profit and cutivate a niche but since it is not a big number, they don't care.

@@Dami19XX Yeah Publishers have been trying to go big since the 2010s to get a wider audience with massive projects that the mainstream audience will love, recently Crash bandicoot 5 was greenlit but then cancelled by Activision despite 4 selling well because they wanted to chase that good old LIVE SERVICE and crash 4 didn't sell gangbusters like call of duty as an excuse for its cancellation WB is doing the same thing along with Square Enix every Publisher CEO wants Bobby Koticks pay size so they have to keep what's popping in the mainstream these days to make profits as smaller budget titles are a waste of money and time for publishers despite the fact that it can help developers with their experience in genres, experiment new ideas in gameplay and graphics and give gamers a variety of games to play from the devs and publisher studio. But that's the reality we may not be in until another few decades from now.

Unless some kind of crash happens, youre probably right. For now we can hope for AA devs to thrive.
