When did Miami players know it was Erickson's last game. Do you think it would affect their performance? Neb 24, Miami 17. Not impressive, but yes, a win. Spurrier 11-10 in bowls, Fulmer 8-7 in bowls. Osborne's impressive feat was beating 3 top 10 ranked CO teams and the margin of the victory over TN, FL, not the victories themselves.

Michigan was the true and ONLY Champion for 1997. First of all, Michigan was ranked #1 in BOTH polls going into their bowl game. They won, and beat a highly ranked WSU team handedly. Therefore, never in the history of college football has a team went into a bowl game being ranked, then won, and dropped in ranking? Look at little bitch boy Neb qb Frost, whining and crying to the coaches to vote them ahead of Michigan, since it was Osbournes last game.....You see, the coaches poll that year was tainted, and not only that, but the AP is a higher ranked poll, and has more meaning. Oh, I guess you Nebraska fans forgot about that little game you had in Missouri, in which you LOST (if not for cheating, and kicking the ball in the endzone). But, you would like to forget that little hiccup, hey sparky? Michigan dominated every game they played, beat more ranked teams, had the Heisman Trophy winner (Woodson), and none of their games were close....Nebraska on the other hand, it took a miracle and LUCK for you to "beat" Missouri, and then you played a highly overrated Tennessee team which had chokemeister Manning at the helm...(Yes, Manning always choked in big college games, just ask him about Florida....lol)

@@thatstokleyguy You are so wrong. Nebraska beat 4 ranked teams, including #2 Washington AT Husky Stadium, 17 KState, 14 Texas A&M, and finally #3 Tennessee, by an average score of 45-18. Michigan fans go on and on about the points per game allowed by their defense, but fail to realize WHY the Nebraska defense allowed 17 points per game (7 more than Michigan). Michigan's offense was TERRIBLE, scoring only 27 points per game, and often the first stringers for Michigan had to play deep into the 3rd even 4th quarter in order to ensure a victory. Nebraska would handily have opponents defeated by halftime, and third, fourth, whatever stringers were playing the entire second half, allowing garbage points to be scored by their opponents. Also, before the "Nebraska should have never jumped the number one team if the number one team didn't lose" NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND. Let's go back to November 8, 1997. Nebraska was number one, barely beat Missouri, at Missouri, a rivalry game, and Michigan jumped them. In 1996 Nebraska was ranked #1 in the nation and Florida was ranked #2. They played for the national championship in the Fiesta Bowl. Nebraska beat Florida 62 to 24. (!ND the game really wasn't that close. ) LOL

In my opinion the two beatdowns that Nebraska gave to SEC teams in the 90's is what inspired the SEC to start playing the physical style of football they play today. I mean think about it, the SEC started to step up it's game over the next five years or so, after this. Tennessee won the title the next year, then LSU got better, then Auburn and Georgia got better, and eventually they started that string of National titles, but it seems like after this game the SEC steadily became more and more physical, and less finesse; unlike the Florida and Tennessee teams that just got overpowered by Nebraska.

How is Nebraska not the lone national champion in 1997 after going 13-0 and beating #3 UT in the Orange Bowl? UT win the SEC with a 11-1 record and their only SEC loss was to Florida. That was a top 5 team that UT lost to that beat PSU in its bowl game.

I guess this is the last Pre-BCS college football season? All the obnoxious sports pundits complained that there needed to be a deciding game, so they got the BCS National Championship. Then those same bozos complained that there needed to be a playoff system, so there 4 team playoff was created. Now they want more. The student athletes are basically pros at this point...

If your still fighting Michigan fans here's the facts: Nebraska (the coaches' poll #1) played 5 top 25 opponents to Michigan's 3, and 2 of those were rated higher than any team Michigan played. Nebraska outscored their opponents by an average of 30.2 points per game, Michigan by 17.3. And after the bowls, Nebraska had the #1 offense and #5 defense, while Michigan had the #45 offense and #2 defense. So don't tell us we wouldn't win. Michigan Tom called we want or trophy thanks pumpkin.

I’ve always wondered how Florida State’s 1997 team would have fared against this Nebraska one, because the Seminoles were a better team than Tennessee. FSU played Florida tougher than the Vols and dominated UNC’s best team ever. Tennessee played a shitload of close games this year. Then again, Florida State struggled in title games during this period and would’ve faced a team not only looking for revenge (for the 1994 Orange Bowl) but also hoping to send its coach out a winner.

Boy, what mismatch this game was talent-wise. Tennessee had 12 or 13 future NFL players and a first ballot HOFer at QB. Nebraska 4 or 5 NFL players and Scott Frost at QB, LOL. Tom Osborne was an absolute wizard to get so much out of so little.

That said, UT has been notoriously bad at stopping both mobile quarterbacks AND the option. A matchup with a Nebraska of this era signaled doom from the start. Look at what happened when we played them again 2 years later. Same result different cast. I hated to see Peyton go out like this, but I do give heavy props to how effective Nebraska was in this era. Maybe now that the option is back in vogue they will return to form.
@cornshucker77

By my quick count NU had at least 20 players (probably more) on this bowl game roster that played in the NFL, including eight of the defensive starters. Notable players are Ahman Green, Mike Brown, Ralph Brown, Jay Foreman, Carlos Polk, Mike Rucker, Eric Warfield, Grant Wistrom all of whom played at least eight years in the NFL. There was far more talent on this team than you realize. That said, I agree that TO was one of the best coaches of all time.
