To be honest, I'm a little worried about the fate of couples in general, when the top comment that always comes through something like this is 'I'm surprised you're not divorced '. I don't know if it's because we've been together since we were 17, but no matter what is happening in our lives, our relationship takes priority over everything else. And if it meant walking away from either of these builds to save *us*, that's what we would have done.
@beezilneverleft3176
Жыл бұрын
I'm with you on that. My husband and I have the same kind of relationship and commitment. I know those comments are meant as jokes, but I just never find them cute or funny. It's essentially saying "we can't be around each other/work together, how can you?" What? I mean, we're human. We get overwhelmed and annoyed with each other. But it passes. You said in another comment "us against the world." That is EXACTLY what we always say, (and feel!) In fact it's how we knew we found the right person in each other. When you know you know! 🤗

We visited a large boat storage yard in Indian Town in the 90’s. While we did not find what we were looking for there seemed to many fixers and Canadian vessels stored waiting for the seasonal voyage to Cuba. The screened in gathering facility providing WiFi. That was very popular back then ! We also met a fellow that had hauled his boat there for some maintenance he needed to do. Then others recognized he had some skills. So with his bicycle and trailer with tools he had a full time list of customers.

Matt, good on you to come up with this build comparison......for Jesse's mindset. It gave her the opportunity to rummage through the video archives and rediscover that you both have completed complex projects and you have completed much on this build . My day job for two decades involved designing and constructing large composite prototype vessels for industry. These projects would often have a stagnation around the completion of the major structural elements and new skill sets were needed for the remainder of the project. Most times, this phase would consume 65% of the $$ and 75% of the hours. Market conditions for performance cats have boosted the value of your work completed to date by 20%. If you continue at your present completion rates, your monthly overhead costs will burn through this in a couple of months. A written plan/design/Bill of Materials and a manager to implement a realistic schedule is needed. "If you can't count it, Paint it or Fence it, you can't control it!". If you thought lookie Lu's and conversationalists were disruptive before, wait until you have standing rigging, running rigging, power and light, instrumentation, propulsion systems and.......demanding a piece of you and Jess's day, let alone KZitem. There is a wealth of talent and resources within a couple of hundred miles of your build site. Before the horse leaves the barn. One off's are a different breed. At this point in time this is a one off as far as an owner/builder is concerned. Don't underestimate the complexity of all you have accomplished and will accomplish...just looking at the most efficient method.

@samrobbins5665

I spent a fair amount of my working life as a Construction Planner. Of course, one of the main functions with the job was to try and come up with a schedule that would achieve the desired completion date. But by their very nature boat rebuilds as with major construction projects are not like a repetitive industrial fabrication - each project build is unique. In reality there is no way of accurately estimating the precise completion date. At best finish dates are aspirational. So, I always asked architects, engineers, owners etc., who were upset that the project was behind schedule, if they knew how late the construction of St Peter' in Rome (or the Pyramids in Egypt or the US Congree building, etc.) was. Except for those of us who have lived these large projects on a daily basis, nobody remembers how late they were... So, moral of the tale - don't beat yourselves up when you miss your deadlines. The boat will be finished when it is finished - and it will be beautiful!

After initially being drawn to Metal Hulled boats, back when I could still tolerate Cold Weather , such that I even became a qualified Welder in case the boat needed work, I ditched the idea after chatting to a local who had built a Steel boat which turned out to be an absolute pig to sail, a d I've stuck with fibreglass boats ever since had a look at Catamarans, but with wave patterns not uncommon here in the Irish Sea, experienced a "Corkscrew " motion that really disorientated me. not Seasick, but very off-putting. So tried a Trimaran, no corkscrew motion, and nearly bought one, but I didn't have a budget that could cope with Haulouts three hulls extra work, and Marina fees. Go Hum, so for me, Monohulls are the no choice Best Choice. 😅 Best Wishes and best of luck to you both. Bob, next Sailboat for me may be late Summer, or early Autumn this year, fingers crossed. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️

You didn’t mention how you got around protecting the aluminum surface from erosion from Salt Water. What were the difficulties with applying protective paint? This fairing technique is not my idea, just passing it along. I make 2 batches of a base of one gallon of gelcoat, 1/3 gallon of polyester resin, and one gallon of Q-cell bubbles. in one batch I also add 4 percent styrene and wax solution plus a pigment. Here is the kicker. I roll on the unwaxed fairing compound, let cure, then roll on the waxed, tinted fairing compound over that. once cured, I sand with a 8 inch DA bondo sander or a straight line sander, both pneumatic. 40 grit, then 80 grit. Prime or spray gelcoat after that. You can always go back and touch up any thing that's missed. Time is valuable. The bulk of the fairing compound dust that ends up in the trash is cheap.

Considering there's only two of you and you've had a huge learning curve your not doing to bad considering Rubie Rose has been waiting over two years for the factory in Vietnam to finish thier boat. The factory has a lot of workers that build boats for thier living and you aren't that far off considering there's just the two of you. I believe your boat will be built as good or most likely better then what the major boat builders are putting out. One of the biggest advantages you will have you will know where every power line goes and the water systems and all the electronics, steering and structural components of your boat should you have any problems in the future.

If I may mention. Bamboo is a strong material but have you ever owned a bamboo chopping board. They grow mould like crazy due to all the little pores. No doubt yours will be coated with a clear coat but I just worry about it.

I don't remember mentioning bamboo. We're doing white oak interior not bamboo.

think about hiring someone as an apprentice? Pass this knowledge on, he or she would walk out of there with skills enough to even start a business

I don't know if we'll ever get to a stage where we feel competent enough to teach someone else, haha. That's why we always do 'This is how WE did it' videos instead of 'How to' videos.

You forgot to mention that Fibreglass boats are non recyclable and end up in landfill with microfibres ending up in the ocean.

How's that broken record? :) Having been through the process, I still don't think aluminum boats overall - once you factor priming/painting, insulation and shipping/ production - is more environmentally friendly than fiberglass. And with enough money, using recycled PVC core, soy based resins, and basalt fibers is an option with fiberglass.

@@MJSailing Broken record with your reply also although its factually incorrect. People need to be aware of the hazards of fibreglass construction to our environment as with burning fuel and dumping plastic straws.. Its amuses me how "environmentalist" change their tune once it impacts them... i wish the younger KZitemrs would show leadership here.

You'd have me at building a pure wooden boat. But aluminum isn't the answer either.

No I`m sure being a perfectionist you will find a way to drag things out, get some help finish the boat and go sailing before you burn out.

Wow the KZitem trolls are out in force. I’ve fallowed your channel from way back when you had just started on Elements. I’ll keep watching your Channel. I realize that it takes time to get the perfection that both of you always shoot for. Right now the ferrying takes for ever and is repetitive for months on end. If you did nothing but show that the trolls bitch and because you haven’t shown it the trolls bitch. SO PLEASE IGNORE THE TROLLS.
