Love my ford 309. Spent lot of time restoring it but it works like a dream

I came back to this video like a year later. Where is the Acres content brother? We miss you!

Since you can't sell it with the issues it has, you could always customize it to work. I am pretty sure that you are more then capable in your ability with tools to get it to where you want it. My father restores and converts old horse drawn equipment to work with his John Deer tractor. I would make angled inserts for the hoppers and as you mentioned put weights on the back of the planter in hopes that it will cut deeper into your garden plot. If you have some tractor wheel weights your not using at the moment maybe design a bracket to hold them where you want them, I would suggest installing a cross bar between the hoppers and adding weights onto it.

May be too late, but Yetter planter units are better at less cost. I don't mind showing you mine.

I would keep it any try to make it work. I would suggest adding some down pressure weight. Look at your 3 point hitch and you’ll see it probably has slotted lift arms which would let the planter ride up as you pull it. Try removing the fert disks if you’re not applying fert, this would put all the weight on the the seed openers. Also, what tractor are you using? A lot of the more modern tractors don’t have the draft control of the older tractors that pulled the old planters.

Try adding about a 1/4-1/2 ton of weight and see if that makes a difference. And if that doesn't work maybe some farm modifications to get it to work

I wonder if it was designed for a 3 point with down pressure to force it down into the dirt

Do yourself a favor, throw that thing on a consignment auction and buy or build one of the cut down two row John Deere 7000 planters. Parts are common, you can rebuild them from a Shoup catalogue, they'll actually notill, and between a corn meter, sunflower meter, and the different brushes in a brush meter, it'll plant most anything you are going to think about growing short of some specialty crops. Even a plate bottom 7000 would be an improvement over that.

Did you pay for that without seeing it in action or was it loaned to you?

A Covington two row planter would take care of your needs for 1/2 the cost.

Sounds like your openers are too close, open them up a bit. If you don't know what i mean, it's the gap at the bottom of those black disks that are sharp.

Just a cheap crappy planter Always ask if the planter has different plates specifically for crop being planted. If planter has only one plate for all crops, DO NOT BUY IT!!!

Do you think you could get new plates machined for it? Have something custom made for different seeds. This all sounds like great feedback for LMC Ag regarding the planting depth and feeder issues. Do you think welding more weight to the supports above the cutting blades would make it work better? It's almost like they copped out on the steel being used and it didn't scale to this size. Glad the homesteading is coming along though!

Your field isn't fit properly for a small light planter like that. You can see in the video all the clumps in the dirt. It needs to be cleaned up and smooth so the planter can open the ground for the seed to drop and you could benefit with some chains to level off the row

Tell me you didn’t watch the video without telling me you didn’t watch the video…… I said in the video everything was tilled 6-8 inches deep prior to planting. 🤦♂️

I wasn't trying to be mean. I'm just giving my thoughts from my experience. I chisel plowed mine, disced, and tilled and still had clumpy soil which caused the openers to not cut deep enough. Once I used a drag and smoothed it out I had no problems with depth of sow.

Weight and no till counters to open the soil would fix it.

Be careful planting sweetcorn near field corn as you can have a pollination issue

Thanks for the review, Ive been on the search for a small planter. I think I might go with a single unit JD7000 if I can find one at a decent price.
