This is a Staging Mechanism that I designed for small water rockets. It is based on a combination of a few existing designs and is activated by a servo and electronic timer. For larger rockets, it will be modified so the electronics stick out less and more support is given for the second stage.
The main body consists of 4 3D printed parts attached to a plastic support with nylon screws. The support was made with a lathe from solid plastic to prevent leaks and contains a non-return valve made from a ball bearing and a pin.
The electronics are protected from splashes by a 3D printed case. The timing can be set using a push button and LED between 0 and 1.5 seconds in 100 millisecond increments.
The stager mounts onto the top of a spliced bottle with a captive bottle cap and the second stage nozzle seals with an o-ring and is locked in place with a lever. A piece of elastic is wrapped around the lever a few times before hooking onto the servo. The elastic can also be used to retain the parachute for the first stage.
When the plug is pulled out at launch, the timer starts and releases the second stage after the predetermined delay. The servo takes around a quarter of a second to release which should be considered when setting the time.
