@AntiNubDevice

@@Ace-Vincent-Arevalo Actually a lot of rikishi employ striking heavily in their style, as well as leg sweeps. It's not striking in the same form as you'll see in MMA fights, but slaps and thrusts are common, and can be devastating. Concussions are common, even broken jaws. And yes, most bouts are quite short, but you'll typically see multiple minute+ bouts a night, even just in the top (and smallest) division.

Sumo really is one of the toughest fighting sports, all the hits they manage to take directly, and all the effort of such big person not to fall, and throw someone like him out of pretty small ring. They are fast, agile, and probably the heaviest and strongest among all the fighters, and they surely are proud of that.
@dantesparda4493

@Okiwaga Yep that's fact right there. I remember those fights clearly. Anyone who is basically big and agile will be the top fighter. Weigh matters... all the time lol
@Nogu3
3 жыл бұрын
@Okiwaga Firstly, its Akebono, not yokobono, I assume you're confusing his shikona (ring name) with his rank in Sumo, Yokozuna, or grand champion. Secondly, sumo is a mix between a martial art and a sport. In the past it was used as a legitimate military drill, however for most of its history it has existed as a form of entertainment and a show of strength. Sumo in general requires several key traits such as excellent balance, strength, flexibility and technique, with its two primary skill sets being tsuki oshi, or thrusting and pushing, as well as yotsu, the more technical throwing, grappling and tripping arts. Sumo has existed in a highly regimented, defined space. A variety of skills in Sumo can be applied to other martial arts, and some martial arts today such as Judo, have roots in Sumo via techniques and throws which descent from it. That being said, what so you expect? Imagine asking a football player to try American Grid Iron, or cricket and baseball, figure skating and curling. Its a specific combat sport that is not meant to overlap with other disciplines. Not every damn fighting style or martial art has to be fully viable in mma or its worthless, its called specialisation for a reason.

People often make fun of sumo wrestlers for the “fat” they have. Which is true, but they have a very good fat to body ratio, being around 22-34 and the average man should have around 18-24. And it’s purely to add weight to gain an advantage because of the lack of weight classes. But under “all” that fat is pure muscle, in addition to this sumo wrestlers have incredible balance and powerful legs. I have nothing but respect for them.

What's really funny, is that the sumo wrestler is wearing a black cotton mawashi- which means this isn't even a highly ranked wrestler they're struggling against. Sekitori (the wrestlers who actually earn a paycheck) wear white practice mawashi, while the lower rankers wear black.

@braxtonmarshall1883
3 жыл бұрын
Not impossible to take down. Just extremely difficult to push over. Taking them down would actually be easy as a wrestler Id shoot in on a quick ankle pick and boom fatty tumbles backwards Their balance comes from not trying to fall down. Being able to maintain balance when somebody has a hold of your leg trying to take you down Now thats real balance thats a wrestlers balance, sumo balance is just about foot position. Body distribution, also if somebody is trying to push you over and you lean into them it helps right? Can't do that in wrestling or you'll get scooped up and slammed. Actual wrestlers have the best balance in my opinion but thats just cause I've done it for 11 years. I've never actually done sumo but I did watch it for a long time and that's the observations I came up with Also you could flip a sumo wrestler over your hip if you wanted to. And it wouldn't exactly be hard either. If you know any wrestling techniques you'd know to get your hips under their hips, then you could simply twist one direction and you'll lift them off the ground with almost no effort, and good luck when somebody has their hips beneath yours, you're either going for a ride or gotta get extremely lucky or hopefully they mess up to get out of it.

@@braxtonmarshall1883 That's assuming a sumo guy would blindly join MMA without bothering to learn any aspects of takedown defense. I hear that argument all the time. _"If Mike Tyson joined MMA in his prime, he'd be easily owned by wrestlers."_ As if his camp would be so stupid as to only focus on his strengths. Dude, wrestling is a great martial art, but they get submitted and knocked the fuck out just like everyone else. It won't be as easy as you're claiming for a wrestler to just steamroll a sumo guy who trained for MMA.

@@arthuuuuuuu You'd actually be suprised. The reigning Yokozuna, and widely considered greatest rikishi of all time, Hakuho Sho, was known for being incredibly lightweight and thin when he began his career in grand Sumo, the Japanese professional circuit. When he ascended he began to take on disciples, and has been known for especially being interested in thinner, lighter wrestlers. Two examples are Enho and Ishiura, both whom I have met and sparred with in person. They use superior technical skill, agility and reaction speed to counter the larger and slower moving rikishi, and are especially known for being very popular with the Japanese and international audiences. Besides the modern generation dearly departed yokozuna Chiyonofuji, another legendary name who went by the moniker of "The Wolf" was also considered quite the lightweight (by sumo standards) and instead relied on an extremely strong and muscular frame to protect his body from his explosive throwing techniques. Also if its necessary, my own master, a Mongolian rikishi was known as one of the lightest wrestlers in his entire division, and he was sekitori, upper divisional professional wrestler. Even today I actually outweigh him, and he remains substantially powerful even past retirement. Sumo without its weight classes naturally thrived off heavyweights, their power and force multiplied by thick layers of fat and sturdy muscle beneath in a large but athletic frame, but with skill, understanding and grit smaller rikishi have also certainly earned their place on the dohyo.
