The Push up is undoubtedly one of the greatest strength exercises for the upper body and I prefer this to the bench press any day. While a bulk of the workload is performed by the chest, shoulders and triceps, the exercise cannot be done correctly without almost every muscle in the body participating. But where I am very interested in is its role in providing scapula stability via strengthening the serratus anterior. If you have ever completed a lot of push ups and the next day you have that sore muscle feeling down the side of your rib cage, that is the serratus anterior you have worked so hard.The serratus anterior is known for being a weak and lazy muscle which causes a multitude of problems for the neck and shoulder as it is critical in providing the optimal alignment and stability of the joints during upper body movement. Several times in the video I mention the role of upward rotation of the scapula. When the arm moves we must see mobility of the scapula as it wraps around the rib cage and this is where serratus anterior is important in creating this motion. Working in tandem with the lower trapezius these two muscles keep the joint stable enough to move.The term winged scapula gets its name from its appearance, a wing-like resemblance, due to the medial border of the scapula sticking straight out from the back. As I mentioned at the start this is a postural fault that can greatly affect a person’s ability to lift, pull, and push weighty objects and can cause pain and discomfort with simple daily activities such as taking your shirt off or playing a sport. When pain sets in people resort to the treatment of trigger point massage, stretching, and acupuncture which all may help in some way but the real answer lies in providing stability.
