Alex Kidd in Miracle World was a nice early response to SMB for us Master System owners; a needed platformer to keep us satisfied. That being said nothing topped Phantasy Star; easily the best JRPG for any 8-bit console, and well ahead of its time. It still holds up great today, especially with the re-localization and improvement hack applied, or even if played vanilla. Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Miracle Warriors, Power Strike II, and Kenseiden would also be in my top 20.

The pack in alex kid was maybe a very iconic game but i absolutely hated it, (the white angel tune of dying and back to the beginning tune are still gifted into my memory) Back then my parent would not get me another game until i finished alex kit (i never finished it) so it was only years later when i got a game gear + sms adapter that i really got to appreciate/enjoy the system. Phantasy Star, golden axe worrier, sonic chaos(gg only i think) and James pond II where my favorite games.

Compared to Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars, Alex Kidd in Miracle World is like playing tennis with the net down.
@shiningphantasy1393

@@andrewrichards312 Yeah Lost Stars; that game has the distinction of being the first purchase and instance where as a young gamer I experienced the ill feeling of buyers remorse. Listening to the 1-800-USA-Sega automated phone message I thought that it was going to be a proper follow-up to Miracle World with the same type of game design. Didn't have publications back in 1987 to get further information. You could eventually get those Sega Challenge magazines by mail order from late 1987 and onwards but those were essentially glorified catalogs.
@andrewrichards312

@@shiningphantasy1393 It's definitely a different platformer, but I the reason I rate it as the quintessential platformer is because for most of the levels you need to dodge enemies whilst navigating platforms and only have attacks for a short period of time. I wasn't that impressed with it either when i first got it, but over time it grew on me and I really felt a sense of accomplishment from finally beating it.
@shiningphantasy1393

@@andrewrichards312 I can look back at it now 37 years later and no longer detest it; the sting of disappointment and my blown allowance faded long ago. I didn't even know at the time that it was an arcade port, as the game was never in any arcade that I visited, and Sega never promoted it that way. Ironically even though Enchanted Castle is more of a proper follow-up to Miracle World I prefer Lost Stars to that one, which had something to do with it being very underwhelming as a 16-bit Genesis game.

Being a SMS owner as a kid, there’s A LOT of titles I LOVED that aren’t on this list…Penguin Land, Rescue Mission, Time Soldiers, Zillion, Montezuma’s Revenge, Keinsieden, Wanted, Safari Hunt, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World (but it’s basically Shinobi so that’s fine) I’m glad you had Dragon’s Trap on here. I’m also assuming if it was on the Nintendo (like King’s Quest, Double Dragon, Rampage, After Burner, Choplifter, etc) it wouldn’t make this list.
@andrewrichards312

The thing that gets me with this list is that not only is there not a single 3D title on it, when it was one of the things this system did which was truly ahead of its time (including with a 3D arcade port of Space Harrier), but the technical marvel that is F-16 Fighting Falcon on a 32Kb Sega Card - a fully functional air combat simulator, using only both standard controllers to play it - is missing from this list.

I'm not sure I agree. Not only is the omission of any 3D games from this list rather glaring, but that of F-16 Fighting Falcon as a fully playable air combat simulator, which only requires both controllers to play and one which fits on a Sega Card no less, strikes me as especially glaring.

Rastan, Golden Axe, Black Belt, Choplifter, Action Fighter, Alien Syndrome, Double Dragon, Rampage, Wonder Boy & Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Enduro Racer, & Micro Machines are ones I really like a lot. Astro Warrior/Hang On I both really like as well was what my system came with when I bought it from KB toys in 1986 with money I earned to buy it. Many Friends & Family had the NES so I decided I want the SMS. I still love it and it’s Color palette that doesn’t hurt my eyes like some NES games. I'm massively critical of a few omissions on this list, and I'm not just talking about an "I like it so it should be on the list" subjective yardstick. If that were the yardstick the omissions of Action Fighter, The Ninja, Double Dragon, Transbot and Astro Warrior would be my gripes here. Although that said, I do question why Alex Kidd in Miracle World was chosen over Alex Kidd: the Lost Stars, when playing the former is like playing tennis with the net down in comparison to playing the later in terms of the difficulty level difference between the 2 (in fact I'd argue that The Lost Stars is far more of the quintessential Master System platformer, than Miracle World). That said, there are a couple of massively glaring omissions from this list. Firstly, how on earth can you be talking about the Sega Master System 1 in its prime, meaning the Sega Master System 1, yet completely fail to include any 3D games from this list? Even if you want to argue that Missile Defense and Blade Eagle were glaringly mediocre, can you honestly say that Space Harrier, ported to the home console and playable in 3D on it, in the mid-1980s, wasn't an absolute technical marvel? That leads me to what I would argue is as egregious an omission, if not more so - F-16 Fighting Falcon. The fact that this was a fully functional air combat simulator on the Sega Master System which they managed to pull off requiring the use of both controllers (or if you don't mind foregoing your ECMs and throttle, just1 controller), would be amazing enough in and of itself, if it only got a cartridge release, where the game could take up as much as 512KB would be one thing. However this thing was so well coded that it fit on a Sega Card, which has a maximum capacity of 32KB! How on earth does that technical marvel - one of the earliest Master System releases too I might add, not make the list?! I get that a lot of this is going to be down to personal preference, but surely, a couple of slots on this list should have been saved for absolute technical masterpieces.

I wonder if you could call the Master System a success next to other products, considered successes, such as the Epoch Cassette Vision, or even the Colecovision. In that, it was a smash hit really. 13mill and not 80mill. is a success next to a phenomena, which was the NES, for about a year. Unless you lived outside the borders of the United States of America (where they were having trouble shifting games for a 7-8 month period. It's boring printing too many carts stuff). Where the Master System was considered even better than the C64, which was more expensive and moved 12-17mill units.
