Brought back memories of a sculpture class I had years ago, back in college. A classmate wanted to use "neutral" colored balloons in his sculpture but couldn't find any - so he used condoms. I remember seeing him and another classmate sitting there in class blowing those things up like they were balloons. The classmate helping him was an older woman and one of the condoms burst as she was blowing it up. She of course had to make a joking comment that that was the first time she ever had a condom explode in her face.

@@rhondaflesher8313 - a side note, regarding condoms. Back in my youth, I often kept house plants, in 'beds' by the window, so whenever I went away on journeys, I often hung numerous condoms full of water, thumbtacked to the ceiling, that would burst occassionally and thus being more dependendable than most of my friends, to keep my plants watered and still alive when I got home Why so? “Put it in your diary” in the US sounds like you mean, “Write about it in your journal.” Usually young teen girls have diaries (or at least they used to) that they would write their innermost secrets in. We in the US would just say, “Put it on your calendar,” or, “Put it on your schedule,” or something similar.

The first few times I heard someone refer to a "jumper" on in a British program, I understood the context well enough to they were referring to clothing, but it conjured the mental picture of it being a jumpsuit, or maybe something like a bib overall. Took awhile to realize they referring to a sweater; and sometimes that seems broadly applied beyond what I'd consider a "sweater".

If you are a hunter that shoots bird out of the sky and has your dog retrieve them, you have to train the dog to do exactly what you want starting when the dog is very young. You can't expect a young, inexperienced puppy to skillfully hold a squirming, flapping wild bird in his/her mouth successfully. Therefore, you start the training with a plastic cylinder. This is called a training dummy. Then you advance the dog to something more bird shaped. This is the advanced dummy. Retrieving the live bird after you have shot it is the grand finale.

A hamper in the US is different than a laundry basket. In between doing laundry, dirty laundry is kept out of sight in a hamper, which has a hinged lid. Then, when one does laundry, one empties the hamper into a laundry basket. One rarely takes the hamper directly to do laundry. A hamper is furniture kept in the bedroom (not a closet or laundry room), which often matches headboard, dresser, nightstands, etc. in a bedroom.

"Jumper" can also refer to jumper cables, which are used to jump-start cars. I think that in some other countries, people call jumper cables "leads" instead, but I'm not 100% on that. In the US, a "dummy" is either/or with what you put on the screen - not sure which usage came first. We call them crash test "dummies" but for window displays and things at a clothes store, I mostly hear people call them mannequins. Though, we do also call the puppets that ventriloquists use "ventriloquist dummies." But... that's got to be universal right? I have _never_ heard someone call it a "ventriloquist puppet" or "ventriloquist doll." With flannel, I used to swear that it meant a jacket with a certain kind of lining in it and a plaid-type of pattern on the outside. But now it seems to just refer to that plaid-type pattern.

Hi guys, 1. A jumper is also what a girl's school uniform is called. 2. A moaner is someone who moans during sex! We say complainer. 3. When we stick up the middle finger to gesture FU, it's called flipping the bird. 4. We say suspenders for braces and they are still popular, especially with older or heavier men to hold up their pants. 5. To shag someone means the same here. We also say a shag carpet. 6. We use a hamper for dirty clothes, an take a picnic basket to the beach.

Many of these words have multiple meanings in the US, such as jumper, which can mean an article of clothing, training bra, animal trainer,, or sports trainer, etc. Fog can mean a weather condition or a state of mind., Braces aren't just for teeth but for anything that needs reinforcement, such as buildings, bridges, cars or people. I had an employee from England and we often enjoyed the differences in our common language. I'll never forget the 1st day he worked for me asking for a rubber. Realizing my surprised reaction, he quickly explained he needed an eraser. He was working with my son in the dark basement of an old building when he asked for a torch to see. My son, thinking he meant a burning torch reasponded , "you'll burn the building down!", he was trying to explain he needed a flashlight. I asked him what they call a torch in England and he said a light. My favorite was when he explained to me why he came in late one day. It seemed he was standing in a long queue to lodge his check at the bank! The English language is oft indeed complicated by national, and regional differences. But what fun we have with it!
