As a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, I can say that my church does meet these criterion. My pastor is more interested in what scripture has to say than what the world has to say. However, I would add something to this list, and it is something simple but essential. What is the role of scripture within the worship service? If it is only a couple of quick blurbs during the sermon and nothing more, I would advise running away as fast as possible. However, if you can take the totality of the order of service and point to it and then show it in scripture, then look carefully and reference the scriptures and see how those verse exist in the greater of context in which they occur.

That's a really good point. Being a religion of the book, it might be a good idea for the pastor to open that book every once and again. I love reading and the biblical texts are, just as a story, phenomenal. The story telling is pretty amazing, the storyline ebbs and flows and the reader is often either weeping or ready to throw it at the wall in frustration. It's a really good book. People really should read it more.

....God Bless you Dear Sister and welcome to the Kingdom of our Dear LORD and GOD. Nothing is more priceless than being Born Again into His Kingdom and into the Body of Christ. I was Born Again into New Life the first day that God led me to open the Scriptures to the Book of John. (The Gospel of John.) And discovered whom Jesus was. Then we know we are indwelt and sealed by the Holy Spirit. Who then teaches us "all truth." My suggestion is check everything against scripture. Be a Berean and check every verse. I have been saved 3 and a half years and l still check everything. Never a day goes by that l'm not in my Bible. It's actually falling apart. I'm having to tape in sections as they fall out. Of course l have other Bibles but l love this one Soo much, because God gave it to me as a gift. Dr. Steven Lawson on One Passion Ministries...has fantastic teachings on the New Birth and what it means to be born again. I highly recommend him. If you are truly Born Again the Holy Spirit will keep you from error. You may venture off at times but you will always recognize the truth when you hear it, and come back. I'm on Instagram under this same name if you would like to talk. God Bless you richly ..📖✝️🌷

I know the feeling. Had the same experience about 7 years ago. I have found my best measuring rod for what is true and what is false about God comes from reading and re-reading the Bible. I don't do study well. I can do it, but I usually have to have help. However, I can read the Bible. And with enough reading (I haven't had enough yet...will need to keep reading to remind myself every day) of the Bible, you get to know what God would and would not actually do, say, desire of us, etc. Best shield against false teachers. And by the way, he said/she said shouldn't even come into it until you're familiar with what God said. Thank God He left us a manual for living the Christian life: The Bible.

@Cade Wolfson Absolutely not trying to offend you...but absolutely no where in Scripture does it tell us to accept Christ into our heart for Salvation. It's not the Biblical way to Salvation. If you go to Ephesians 1:13 it says regarding Jesus "after you hear the Word of truth, the gospel of your Salvation" then you trust and believe. But if you go back to v4 it tells us whom it's speaking of who God has chosen before the foundation of the world. The Gospel is 1 Corninthians 15:1-4. And turning away from sin? No man can do that until The Holy Spirit of God has come unto us and given us the New heart at the New Birth. Then we are granted repentance by God. It's all a supernatural working of God. Stick with the scriptures. God Bless...🙏

I think you missed some *extremely* important things, and threw in a few that were just based on your personal likes and dislikes. 1) What does your church teach about gifts of the Spirit? 2) How does the church serve its members and encourage them to serve each other? 3) What opportunities for fellowship are available (e.g. prayer groups, Bible studies, etc.)?

@k9builder
2 жыл бұрын
These three really are not as essential as you may think. Even the Apostle Paul thought very little of such gifts, for he writes that tongues and prophecy shall cease. As for serving members and fellowship, my experience has shown that these can be rather self-seeking and do nothing for building of the body Christ which can only come through the preaching of the Gospel of Christ. Certainly we need people to assist in the worship service as ushers and communion assistants, as well as elders to assist the pastor in the care of the congregation, but all these things are adiaphoron. In fact, your last two points are actually highlights of "seeker sensitive" churches.
@josephbrandenburg4373
2 жыл бұрын
@@k9builder Paul at least wrote about the spiritual gifts (and the passage you mentioned is one out-of-context sentence among dozens of sentences that speak positively of the gifts). When did he ever write about 1-hour services, once a week, where people sit facing the same direction listeing to ~20 minutes of music and ~40 of preaching? Is that in the Bible anywhere? That being said, you're reading your own spin into the question because you decided to disagree with me before reading it-- is knowing the church's stance in the gifts going to help *you* find a church? Yes, because you are looking for one that deemphasized them. As for the other two, the New Testament is replete with references to serving and fellowship among the body, and rarely (by comparison) talks about serving unbelievers. It commands us to love one another, not to shake hands once a week while the band is getting on stage and the announcements are finished. As for "preaching the Gospel", it looks a lot more like what Ray Comfort does in Huntington Beach than spending a month of Sundays analyzing the nuance of every verse in Hosea. There's room for this sort of thing, but equating it with "preaching the Gospel" is something unique to comfortable, lukewarm westerners. The church in the West is rapidly on the decline despite people needing truth more than ever because the thing we want from a church is a safe little box for our spiritual practice, which must not be allowed to pervade into the weekdays. That's why it's always 1 hour, and consists only of music and preaching. It's something you can passively consume- how American! It's even reached the point where people use the internet to beam it into their houses instead of obeying the Word's entreatments, "Let us not neglect to meet together". There's no time for obeying the apostles when they tells us to love one another. We only obey the Great Comission on a technicality. After all, we mention Jesus a few times while going through the Old Testament laws, or building an entire sermon around a single verse in Ezekial. We are in the same place, so we're still meeting together! Again, a technicality. It is harder to form relationships in a church than it is to fade into the background and be a mere acquaintance for years at a time. You finished your comment with a fancy sounding big theology word and a slanderous accusation, to really hammer it home that you don't have a good reason for your reply besides reflexively defending Todd Friel's banal opinions. How can you say that believers serving each other is immaterial (a word which, by the way, works just as well, and doesn't require a dictionary to use)? How many times in the New Testament are we commanded to love one another, even as our own family, even as our own flesh? And yet you're saying it's self-seeking and unimportant. Worse, you're saying it's "seeker-sensitive", which as we all know is just a sticker you attach to anything that isn't boring, empty, and sterile, to try and conflate "something people want" with "worldliness". I am trying to obey the Bible's teaching, not to modify it for the world. Nor for the church's comfort. The Bible tells us to live our lives together and give generously, to help each other as we have need, to anoint the sick and pray for each other. If it's desirable to people outside the church, so much the better.

No one can call Jesus Lord except by the Holy Ghost right? Romans 10:14 KJV - How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? They receive the Holy Ghost upon believing in the death burial and resurrection of Jesus, at which point they are saved and are enabled to call Jesus Lord. @cristiewentz8586 You wrote: " There isn't any chance in the world or Jewish teaching that they believed what they were given was anything but a metaphorical blood and body" I never got around to responding to this comment. In the New Testament we see the Jews did NOT think Jesus was speaking metaphorically, what you are saying here is actually untrue. What you also are not aware of is the the way the sacrifices worked in Jewish religion and the significance of Christ being the sacrificial lamb. Gen. 14:18 - this is the first time that the word “priest” is used in Old Testament. Melchizedek is both a priest and a king and he offers a bread and wine sacrifice to God Psalm 76:2 - Melchizedek is the king of Salem. Salem is the future Jeru-salem where Jesus, the eternal priest and king, established his new Kingdom and the Eucharistic sacrifice which He offered under the appearance of bread and wine Malachi 1:11 - this is a prophecy of a pure offering that will be offered in every place from the rising of the sun to its setting. Thus, there will be only one sacrifice, but it will be offered in many places around the world. This prophecy is fulfilled only by the Catholic Church in the Masses around the world, where the sacrifice of Christ which transcends time and space is offered for our salvation. If this prophecy is not fulfilled by the Catholic Church, then Malachi is a false prophet Exodus 29:38-39 - God commands the Israelites to “offer” (poieseis) the lambs upon the altar. The word “offer” is the same verb Jesus would use to institute the Eucharistic offering of Himself Lev. 19:22 - the priests of the old covenant would make atonement for sins with the guilt offering of an animal which had to be consumed. Jesus, the High Priest of the New Covenant, has atoned for our sins by His one sacrifice, and He also must be consumed Zech. 9:15-16 - this is a prophecy that the sons of Zion, which is the site of the establishment of the Eucharistic sacrifice, shall drink blood like wine and be saved. This prophecy is fulfilled only by the priests of the Catholic Church Exodus 12:5 - the paschal lamb that was sacrificed and eaten had to be without blemish. Luke 23:4,14; John 18:38 - Jesus is the true paschal Lamb without blemish Exodus 12:8,11 - the paschal lamb had to be eaten by the faithful in order for God to “pass over” the house and spare their first-born sons. Jesus, the true paschal Lamb, must also be eaten by the faithful in order for God to forgive their sins Lev. 7:15 - the Aaronic sacrifices absolutely had to be eaten in order to restore communion with God. These sacrifices all foreshadow the one eternal sacrifice which must also be eaten to restore communion with God. This is the Eucharist (from the Greek word “eukaristia” which means “thanksgiving 2 Kings 4:43 - this passage foreshadows the multiplication of the loaves and the true bread from heaven which is Jesus Christ John 6:4,11-14 - on the eve of the Passover, Jesus performs the miracle of multiplying the loaves. This was prophesied in the Old Testament (e.g., 2 Kings4:43), and foreshadows the infinite heavenly bread which is Him I love typology. You can see the connection here and why what the Catholic Church says is the truth and what MacArthur teaches is false teaching. John 6:51-52- then Jesus says that the bread He is referring to is His flesh. The Jews take Him literally and immediately question such a teaching. How can this man give us His flesh to eat John 6:53 - 58 - Jesus does not correct their literal interpretation. Instead, Jesus eliminates any metaphorical interpretations by swearing an oath and being even more literal about eating His flesh. In fact, Jesus says four times we must eat His flesh and drink His blood. Catholics thus believe that Jesus makes present His body and blood in the sacrifice of the Mass. Protestants, if they are not going to become Catholic, can only argue that Jesus was somehow speaking symbolically John 6:23-53 - however, a symbolic interpretation is not plausible. Throughout these verses, the Greek text uses the word “phago” nine times. “Phago” literally means “to eat” or “physically consume.” Like the Protestants of our day, the disciples take issue with Jesus’ literal usage of “eat.” So Jesus does what John 6:54, 56, 57, 58 - He uses an even more literal verb, translated as “trogo,” which means to gnaw or chew or crunch. He increases the literalness and drives his message home. Jesus will literally give us His flesh and blood to eat. The word “trogo” is only used two other times in the New Testament (in Matt. 24:38 and John 13:18) and it always means to literally gnaw or chew meat. While “phago” might also have a spiritual application, “trogo” is never used metaphorically in Greek. So Protestants cannot find one verse in Scripture where “trogo” is used symbolically, and yet this must be their argument if they are going to deny the Catholic understanding of Jesus’ words. Moreover, the Jews already knew Jesus was speaking literally even before Jesus used the word “trogo” when they said “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” (John 6:52 John 6:55 - to clarify further, Jesus says “For My Flesh is food indeed, and My Blood is drink indeed.” This phrase can only be understood as being responsive to those who do not believe that Jesus’ flesh is food indeed, and His blood is drink indeed. Further, Jesus uses the word which is translated as “sarx.” “Sarx” means flesh (not “soma” which means body). See, for example, John 1:13,14; 3:6; 8:15; 17:2; Matt. 16:17; 19:5; 24:22; 26:41; Mark 10:8; 13:20; 14:38; and Luke 3:6; 24:39 which provides other examples in Scripture where “sarx” means flesh. It is always literal John 6:55 - further, the phrases “real” food and “real” drink use the word “alethes.” “Alethes” means “really” or “truly,” and would only be used if there were doubts concerning the reality of Jesus’ flesh and blood as being food and drink. Thus, Jesus is emphasizing the miracle of His body and blood being actual food and drink John 6:61-63 - Jesus acknowledges their disgust. Jesus’ use of the phrase “the spirit gives life” means the disciples need supernatural faith, not logic, to understand His words John 3:6 - Jesus often used the comparison of “spirit versus flesh” to teach about the necessity of possessing supernatural faith versus a natural understanding. In Mark 14:38 Jesus also uses the “spirit/flesh” comparison. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. We must go beyond the natural to understand the supernatural. In 1 Cor. 2:14,3:3; Rom 8:5; and Gal. 5:17, Paul also uses the “spirit/flesh” comparison to teach that unspiritual people are not receiving the gift of faith. They are still “in the flesh John 6:63 - Protestants often argue that Jesus’ use of the phrase “the spirit gives life” shows that Jesus was only speaking symbolically. However, Protestants must explain why there is not one place in Scripture where “spirit” means “symbolic.” As we have seen, the use of “spirit” relates to supernatural faith. What words are spirit and life? The words that we must eat Jesus’ flesh and drink His blood, or we have no life in us John 6:66-67 - many disciples leave Jesus, rejecting this literal interpretation that we must eat His flesh and drink His blood. At this point, these disciples really thought Jesus had lost His mind. If they were wrong about the literal interpretation, why wouldn’t Jesus, the Great Teacher, have corrected them? Why didn’t Jesus say, “Hey, come back here, I was only speaking symbolically!”? Because they understood correctly John 3:5,11; Matt. 16:11-12 - here are some examples of Jesus correcting wrong impressions of His teaching. In the Eucharistic discourse, Jesus does not correct the scandalized disciples Anyway, the Church always maintained this truth of the Christian faith. The deviation occurs later in reformers. Hence why we must reject Protestantism. In light of all this information I have personally decided it's all a sham. A clever ruse by Satan to prevent you for obtaining the Eucharist.

I read men like Ken Ham, Tim LaHaye, Henry Morris, John MacArthur and my own pastor, David Jeremiah. They all teach that the Hebrew word in Genesis 1 is the word for a twenty-four hour day, NOT millions or billions of years. How can one misinterpret the word "day?" Sad to say, people who claim that the day in Genesis 1 are listening to evolutionists and not to what God says. If you interpret "day" as millions/billions of years, and then read, for example that Noah lived 960 years, then that would mean Noah lived 960 years times 365 million/billion days. Jesus rose after three days in the tomb, not 3 million/billion years.

Concerning #14, the literal 6 day creation account... There's a trend I've noticed with many young earth creationists. It doesn't directly relate to what was said on this topic in this video, but I'll state it anyways. I've noticed more than just a few of them will, when evangelizing, use their view on this secondary issue as a hurdle to try and force the people to jump over before the young earth creationist will present the gospel. They essentially are holding the gospel with one hand held back and with the other hand they're keeping the person they're evangelizing to an arm's length away, and they wont give the gospel to that person until they agree with their view on this secondary issue. That is appalling behavior. An analogy for this would be if a Calvinist wouldn't present someone the gospel until they agreed with their doctrine that no one has free will. Don't pretend secondary issues are gospel issues. I said it before in this comment and I'll say it again, I'm not suggesting that he is saying any of that in this video. I don't know personally whether or not he does this, so please don't pretend as though I'm accusing him of doing this. All of that being said, not choosing a church because of this secondary issue seems silly to me. I don't see how anyone could have this attitude if they've given careful thought to the old earth creationist position regardless of whether or not they agree with it. There are plenty of genuine, God fearing, Bible thumping Christians, and I mean all of that in a wonderful way, who hold that view, myself included.

Does the "praise band" rehearse "Reckless Love" just before church starts every other week because, it would be "reckless" not to rehearse it one more time because we've only played 100 ba-zillion times before and it's such a complex and mind-full little ditty jam-packed with solid (not "reckless") high-concept theology. Recklessness is bad so the band needs rehearsal as people are hoping to pray (pray for divine mercy to make them stop). Rehearsing means we're not "reckless" and calling the King of kings reckless over and over and over at the top of our lungs is certainly not a reckless thing to do....

Just pick whatever Church you like, thanks to the protestant reformation you can now just Church hop or pick a new one every week like an icecream parlor. When the Bible talks about a church, it really means a collection of like minded believers. Not one singular authoritative church that governs all the Christians. That single institute would not be confusing and that's why we reject this idea. We want a confusing collection of denominations from which to choose.

This is well and good, but a church with good theology that ignores its members, and does not make them feel included, is a lousy fit. We belonged to a church for 20 years, and my wife always felt like a visitor. My wife sang in the choir of the church she attended, when we dated. Even though multiple choir members knew that at our prior church, no one asked her to join. Yet, as soon as we decided to join our new church, several choir members started to recruit her.

This is eerily timely. I've been going to the Anglican Church in Canada near me because I love singing hymns with the organ. The fact that they do not disagree with any missive the Liberal Party puts out (making them functionally inseparable from the Liberal Party) has been troubling me. That and the syncretism with indigenous religion has been putting me off returning. I went to the Baptist Church in town and HATED the music. Banal, sophomoric, simpering worship music. One hymn. One song that was probably Sovereign Grace music, realistically. Musically and lyrically forgettable. The message was expositional. The closing prayer started with, "Hey Jesus," and I about vomited. So what would you do if you were me? Go to the insultingly informal Baptist church? Or to the politically toxic Anglican church? Grit my teeth through a 10 minute homily? Turn a blind eye to the book of Alternative Services, a liberal rewriting of the Westminster that guts and undermines the confessions? Or endure a 15 minute singalong by some schlub in Birkenstocks? UUUUUUUUUGH!!!!! I shouldn't have asked God for clarification, because now I think I've got it. Thanks for nothing, Todd Friel.

Ironically, I know almost all of the answers to these questions after only THREE WEEKS of his sermons on Romans 6 & 7. I’ve been searching for a true church since 2018 and I feel God has finally blessed me with a true church family. When you know what to look for it’s pretty easy to weed them out. I went to another church only one time because the pastor said if you aren’t healed and rich it’s due to unbelief. I find pastors who are off track love to shame “church hoppers”. As Christians we only need to continue encouraging each other to keep in the path of His plan according to the guidance of His Holy Spirit in the name of His Son Jesus Christ.
