I was gonna say wait where is AntiChrists because I always assumed it was a french film because everything about it is similar to the themes and filming styles of french extremity films and because well Charlotte Gainsbourg is like the french macabre queen! But since it is not I'm wondering now have you covered AntiChrists and if so which category of film did you or would you put it in?

Hi Emma! No need to apologize. Your list is very good and you make a real effort to write the original title. It's not a big thing. 7 Days is not a "French" film, it's french canadian, from Quebec, just up north the US. We have great filmmakers but we are not known for horror. So I would say it's more an anomaly than being part of the French extreme wave. In that regard I feel Man bites Dog feels more "french" than 7 days.

Well none of those countries can quite top French Extremity or the french disturbing macabre. The French cinema is a beast at this genre and while Spain, Portugal, India etc might have a few films that can match to the french extremity category its simply not enough. France has not only earned it but created this category. Just like japan will always have the owned the category of many of the world's scariest most original horror films ever seen that can be remade but never duplicated well France is the same way in the disturbing/extreme category. Incident at Ghostland is actually a really tragic film. The whole crew got sued (director, producer) because the blonde girl's face got split open during a scene where a mirror breaks, and it LITERALLY ruined her life and career. What is even worse is, they kept the scene in the film AND a great many people think the box art (even though it is not same girl) is sort of playing up the actresses injury (as the poster is a picture of a girl with literally, a split face). Adds some real darkness to an already messed up flick.

Whenever I see lists about Final Girls, I'm always deadly suprised that Yasmine from Frontier(s) doesn't make an appearance. She is easilly the most OP final girl I can think of for all she witnesses and endures. She just accesses a primitive survival mode which almost looks like her fight and flight response in autopilot. Excellent list Emma... I have almost all of these on DVDs or Blu-ray. But I am sad that you left off the films that lie at the roots of the French horror, namely Eyes Without A Face/Les Yeux Sans Visage from 1960 and DIabolique 1955, which influenced Psycho. I first saw Les Yeux Sans Visage in 1990 in New York among an ultra hip audience. There were screams and laughter at the same time. I just know you haven't seen this yet... Why? Another film that would fit is Baby Blood (1990). Also 13 Tzameti. But no Eyes Without A Face? My head is buried in my hands. (Until you finally see it.) Thanks Emma.

I've never forgotten Irreversible for 3 key reasons. The first is I can't even begin to guess how they did the practical effects for the fire extinguisher scene, you see every hit and the face gradually collapse and disintegrate without the camera ever panning away or cuts. Insane. The second is actually a mistake. A crew member ACCIDENTALLY walked into how during the tunnel scene, realised his mistake, and quickly exited the way he had entered. It made the already brutal scene even more impactful because what we see is a bystander walk in on the rape and rather than help in any way, just leave. This was early enough that she could have definitely survived has he intervened. The third is just the final message - LE TEMPS DETRUIT TOUT - which translated as "time destroys everything" or "time destroys all things"....like a decade later I still think of that quote sometimes because it is so depressingly true. There is nothing in this Universe that will not be eventually destroyed by time, including the actual Universe itself.

Great list, but I wanted to point out that both The Ordeal and Man Bites Dog are Belgian films - not French ones. We already don't have a lot to be proud of in our tiny piece of land in the middle of nowhere, so... Also, Revenge is partly Belgian, as are some of the actors in it. Regarding Gaspar Noë: I met him after a screening of Climax at the Ghent Film Festival, and was frankly surprised at how friendly and 'normal' he seemed to be.

I'd like to know what is going on in Gaspar Noë's mind, besides his films plots and actors he is very talented at making me feel uncomfortable with sound frequency, camera angles, lighting and strobe effects, that alone makes me feel tense and anxious.

While extreme films are not really my genre (as you know), I was surprised that there were a few films that I had seen (and enjoyed) like Man Bites Dog, Martyrs, Climax, High Tension and my favorite of your list Them/Ils. POSSIBLE SPOILER (TRYING TO BE VAGUE): I will say that I was impressed by the twist of High Tension. While it doesn't fully make sense when you recall certain early scenes, the third act does make sense from its true perspective. when you make lists of 20 movies I usually have only seen 1 max 2...on this list, I saw 3! Ghostland, Martyrs, and Ordeal. Surprising, as French extremity is definitely not the one I would have expected to see more of, this kind of content is usually too hard for me to stomach.

I love your videos. Can you add the movie titles in your description? Or maybe I’m missing them somewhere.

Hey! The reason I don’t do this is because then people don’t actually watch a video, if I did this I’d be better off doing a blog.

Yay thanks Emma awesome video! There’s so many I still need to see 👀 Raw has been on my list for a long time. I’m so glad you mentioned haute tension I’ve been waiting for this video 🖤 I think the ending was awesome, on first viewing I was really taken back by it but I think it’s a movie you need to watch a second time to fully appreciate it, Ive never seen a movie quite like it or at least with certain themes that hit me that way. I don’t think the ending deserves the hate it gets because on second viewing there were so many little Easter eggs for the unfolding of the ending I didn’t pick up the first time! it’s honestly one of my favourite movies.🥰

Believe it or not, but a lot of the torture in 7 days were tone down a lot compared to the book

I love hearing The Ordeal get a mention here; I’ve been shouting it since 2004.. it’s a masterpiece.

None of these films were as hard core as they were made out to be. Not a one.
