Outstanding once again. One word about why the British pronunciation of "lieutenant" sounds like "left tenant" you say you do not know why. Here's an explanation coming from my father who is a Latin teacher. This officer replaces the Captain when the Captain is not present, when the Captain has left. He "tient lieu" (French translation for "takes place") . So the American translation refers to the French "lieu" and the British refers to the English translation, "Left"

In Canada, most pronunciations are of the American type, but Lieutenant is one word that is pronounced in the British style, Left tenant.
@TheObjectiveTruth0

The French took the Latin words Locum Tenens (meaning in place of) and substituted their translation Lieu Tenant (meaning in place of). When it was later printed in England it was pronounced Leftenant. It traveled that way as the Brits colonized.

Dear Sir, Thank you for your wonderful and lucid elaborations. I've a few queries with regards to choosing the suitable one for the pronunciations: 1. Pronunciations should always be followed according to the British English 2. Pronunciations should always be followed according to the American English 3. Pronunciations should be followed mixing use of the American English and the British English Thank you. Kind regards
@pat7785
2 жыл бұрын
Your choice of pronunciation should simply depend on the types of people you are going to be speaking English with. I believe both groups would appreciate it if you tried to pronounce words as they do. Furthermore, using the contraction "I've" in the context used above is pretty much exclusive to British English, also, "queries" would normally be replaced by "questions" in both British and American English unless you are speaking extremely formally.

I think youre correct, but also consider: "Likes and dislikes on KZitem videos influence what videos you could be watching next. This is a means for the KZitem algorithm to understand what kind of videos you prefer watching. When you dislike a video you signal the KZitem algorithm to stop showing you videos from those categories." So it could be that people just don't want to be shown pronunciation videos any more.

Great lesson! I definitely pronounce the "k" in *asked!* [ăskt] But I do pronounce it a bit slower since it is a bit awkward. Photograph /ˈfoʊ toʊˌgræf/ [FŌ·tō·grăf] Entrepreneur /ˌɑn trə prəˈnʊər/ [ŏn·trŭ·pŭ·NŪR] I definitely don't ignore that "D" in *adjective* either! /ˈæd dʒɪk tɪv/ [ĂD·jĕk·tĭv] - Remember that IPA /dʒ/ is a single sound, the "j" sound in English. So you're not actually saying /d/ twice. *Prejudice* _is_ spelled how it sounds, except for the useless silent *e* at the end. (Most "final silent Es" signal a long pronunciation of a preceding vowel, but here it does not.) *Colonel* is always pronounced exactly like the English word *kernel.* That should be easy to remember. I pronounce *congratulations* as [kŭn·‵grăd·jū·LĀ·ʃŭns(z)] /kənˌgrædˌdʒuːˈleɪ ʃəns/

IPA pronunciations always explain where to put the stress: *succinct* /səkˈsɪŋkt/ The (ˈ) mark precedes the syllable that gets the most stress. English can have words where more than one syllable receives some stress. The (ˌ) mark precedes a syllable that gets secondary stress. *anticipation* /ænˌtɪs əˈpeɪ ʃən/
