I spent three weeks this summer at the peak of tourism and generally if you're a budget traveller Greece is absolutely doable with a low budget. Also, public transportation is great and reliable. For instance, in Santorini instead of using Taxis one can just use the public bus which only costs 2 €. This was the case in practically every island. Even on the mainland, public buses are fairly cheap. If you don't want to eat extremely expensive just eat a gyros or souvlaki for about 3.50€ (usually that's already enough to fill you up). If you go on lesser known parts of Greece a hostel might just cost you 10€ a night (even in Meteora!). In any way, if you go to Greece you will have an amazing time.

You miss the real Greece when you go to Mykonos and Santorini. Greece has 6000 kilometers of beaches, lovely mountain villages, gorges, clear and easy kayaking rivers, skiing slopes, traditional bridges and so much more that you cannot ignore. One day's stay in Santorini is equal to the tour of the Peloponnese for 3 days, (Ancient Olympia, Epidaurus, Mycenae, Nafplio, Monemvasia, Mani, Polylymnio, Voidokoilia beach, Methoni and and and). A visit to Epirus (with rivers, mountains, gorges, beaches, villages, bridges, waterfalls and much more) you will never forget! The same with Western Macedonia, Halkidiki, Mount Athos. Pelion in Thessaly and central Greece with its high mountains, which are an hour away from the sea. And if you insist on the islands...then look for Ithaca, Kythera, Skopelos, Sifnos, Chios, Symi, Thassos, Amorgos and... kzitem.info/news/bejne/161t2J6januBl2k

Yeah i heard, Greece is not the way it used to be. I remember forever when I wasn't with my parent back in the 80's, 90's and it was still ok, But, when I went back in 2007, omg, things changed. You don't hear the language anymore. All you hear is, Russian, English from England....they live there, Bulgarians, etc. It's sad. Depressing. But, We're going next month, in June, usually, we go in Sept. but, my son-in-law wanted to go now and ITS EXPENSIVE!!! Those tickets killed me. Way cheaper to go in Sept. It's still warm, the last time we stayed from Sept to Nov. Dang it was cold. lol And we don't go to the touristy areas. So, This should be different, now since I'm older, am I going to have issues walking. My husband is cheap. We go on the Metro, Walk, to the ports, and take the ferry. This is gonna be different.

It is expensive if you go to the touristic hotspots indeed but prices vary hugely from island to island and on the mainland too. We visited two Cyclades islands in July this year and spent no more than 35 euros a day for a rental car, and no more than 60 euros a night for accommodation. The islands were not crowded, not feeling like you were trapped in a souvenir shop and insanely beautiful. As for the food and people, the further away you go from tourist spots, the better they are. We go to Greece once or twice a year and it is for me by far the best destination ever but now avoid the very well known places. There's so much more to discover.
@RiddimKingdom

I think you can rely on busses and other public transport in Greece, BUT you need to be super cool and casual and not worry too much about timings. I used busses all over the Greek mainland and the islands and yes, they are always late, or arrive whenever they want to, but they are great and very very cheap.

I agree on most of your recommendations. Just to let you know all the businesses accept cards in Greece. Also, you can travel in May or September even to Mykonos and Santorini when the weather is great and get a car for 35 euro and eat nicely with 15euro per person. Air Travel between the islands is not the best but if you avoid the main islands there are airlines that do island hoping from Crete to Karpathos then to Kasos or Samos etc. Also Greece is a shopping destination, but mostly in the mainland. In Mykonos or Santorini you will spend a lot, those are shops for rich people, but if you shop in Athens Airport or even outside of the airport where a mall and an outlet are located you can get great deals. I hope you enjoyed Greece this year.

I understand you are not greek and just sharing your experiences at the place so I'll just point out a few mistakes as a local Hummus is not greek so don't order it here Boughatsa is a breakfast not a dessert Tipping is definitely a thing here just not as much like in the U.S Usually a good rule of thumb is to round the bill For instance if the bill is 27euros if you leave 30 it's fine and you can also tip on the card Specially at restaurants it is expected Not mandatory but appreciated Also we never expect foreigners to speak our language so you don't really have to learn any words beforehand People speak English pretty decently for the most part here

As a Greek I can say that: 1. Crete is definately not a part of the Cyclades. 2. There's no rule for tipping, it's not a must, but it's kind of an unwritten rule. Waiters, bartenders etc work long hours for almost minimal wage in most islands (not talking about expensive places in Mykonos and Santorini), so tips help them a lot. 3. Shopping clothes etc can be very cheap, unless you go on Mykonos' expensive shops. 4. 9:02 this beach is one of the most Instagram famous places in the country, strange that it isn't well known for international travellers. 5. I think almost every bussiness/shop accepts card payments now. I agree about everything else though, good takes. I'd also mention that most people in touristy places know at least some words in English, in contrast to other EU countries like France or Spain, where people don't know or don't want to speak English. Also, Ionian Islands (Kefalonia, Zakinthos, Kerkira, Lefkada, Ithaki etc) are very beautiful and cheaper than most Cyclades in general. You should definately visit them. :)

Wow Thanks for the insights. Would March be a good time to visit the islands to avoid crowds?
@dackjaniels443
11 ай бұрын
@@medhashankar2484 I think March might be too early for the islands. They're very windy (especially Cyclades), so it would be very cold and you'd feel kinda lonely, there aren't many local people that live in the islands during winter. I think April-June and September are periods with good weather that you can avoid crowds. Especially in September you can get some good deals and the temperature is pretty much the same as summer.

Greece is generally NOT expensive. It s actually one of the best value for money places! Places like Mykonos can be expensive but keep in mind that this is a jet set island and not representative. And the internet speeds are comparable to the rest of Europe, if you had some specific problems, you should not overgeneralise. Also, a big one, you did not mention that women feel very comfortable travelling in Greece alone, in contrast with islamic countries such as turkey where rapes and sexistic behaviour towards women is very common.
