Question Time Stamps for Quick Reference: 0:00 - Introduction 1. 0:46 {How to “Take Every Thought Captive”} What does it mean to "take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ" in 2 Corinthians 10:5? What are some examples of how we can live this out? 2. 9:04 {Advice for a Difficult Church Situation} My daughter and her father-in-law visited the church I attend. They brought my 3 month old Grandson who was making loud sounds. One of the attendants asked them to leave. Now I have mixed feelings about this church. Should I continue to attend? 3. 11:08 {Can Remarried People Serve in Church?} A divorced lady in my church recently got remarried to someone else. The church is not allowing remarried couples to serve in any area of the church. Is this biblical? 4. 14:03 {Why are there Sacrifices if Jesus is our Sacrifice?} Why are there sacrifices (more specifically, sin offerings) in the millennial temple on Earth (ex. Ezekiel 42: 13)? I don't get it since Jesus was the final and perfect sacrifice. 5. 20:07 {Surrendering to God when it’s Difficult} I'm double-minded and depressed. I want real salvation but have a hard time fully surrendering. Good works and prayer feel like pushing a boulder up a hill. Any advice? 6. 24:14 {What is Love, According to the Bible?} Define love according to the Bible. Is it a feeling? Act? Choice? This is very important to me because it will inform how I view if I was loving or not in situations. 7. J. 30:42 {Does Sanctification Continue in Eternity?} Do you think sanctification is complete upon our death and resurrection, or do we continue to “improve” throughout eternity? 8. 32:57 {How to be Calm & Kind on Social Media} I often find myself being rude on social media. I don’t mean to be, but it just gets the better of me. How do you approach people, consistently, in such a loving manner? 9. 36:12 Angels, Free Will, & Did God Command Satan to Rebel?} How would you react to someone who claims that angels don't have free will, and that by extension, God commanded Satan to rebel? Hoping to address the issue and the heart here, thanks! 10. 39:41 {Biblical Help when Struggling with Infertility} I recently have had intense disappointment and grief in my life re: fertility and am struggling with not knowing God's path for my life. Do you have any biblical help to heal and move forward? 11. 42:26 {Is Luke a “Social Justice Gospel”?} The book of Luke is being described as the "social justice gospel” in Progressive circles. What do you think about Luke being described as the social justice gospel? 12. 46:00 {About the Vows in Numbers 30} What specific examples of vows or oaths do you think Numbers 30 was referring to? 13. 50:16 {Refuting WMSCOG Theology} I was approached by the Mother God cult in a department store, and they used Galatians 4: 26. How could I bring clarity to this verse for them next time? 14. 56:22 {Should we Choose a Denomination Right Away?} I'm a new convert. I love God. However, since I'm a new convert I haven't "chosen" a denomination yet. Must I hurry and choose one? Right now, I'm just happy reading the Bible, believing, and praying. 15. 58:44 {About “Seal” & “Deposit” in 2 Cor.} What is the meaning of the words "seal" and "deposit" in 2 Corinthians 1: 22? 16. 1:02:18 {Lovingly Calling Out Sin} How do I love and exhort a close family member who knows & believes the Gospel but doesn't seem bothered by some sinful choices (e.g., going to rowdy parties, getting drunk)? 17. 1:06:41 {About Leviathan} What are your thoughts on Leviathan? Do you believe he is an actual creature, or more symbolic? Where is he now? 18. 1:14:48 {What if I Don’t Live near a Bible-based Church?} What do you do when there are only Jehovah’s whiteness, Catholic, and extremely Progressive churches within a day’s drive of where you live? 19. 1:15:33 {What to Do when a Spouse Turns from Faith} What advice do you have for a man who married a Christian but she has turned away from the faith? I struggle with feeling betrayed by her and God, and I worry about raising our newborn in the faith. 20. 1:20:38 {Modesty according to the Bible} What do you believe is the standard of modesty, biblically?

I appreciate the answer to question #15! However, I was wondering - and I am still unsure - if that verse could be linked to the "once saved always saved" doctrine, as some people say. Is Paul talking about an unbreakable seal, placed once and forever? Or could the seal ever be broken if you stray away from the faith and reject God?

Mike I have been a Christian since I was nine. I have read many different Bibles and developed an overall view of what we are to do as Christians. I find your research very helpful even though I have been studying the Bible for 51 years. It always surprises me how little folks know even after all their reading and group study. My mom did prison ministry for 25 years under Chuck Kolson and was considered so good she was asked to speak in Washington D.C. There were so many things she could not explain to me and she even became more liberal toward the end of her life. In the end I learned to explain things better to move her back more to what the Bible says. Dad went to seminary school for two years. Again there were many things he did not understand. I wish they could have listened to some of your takes on some of these topics. I wish I was not disabled and can not stand to drive anywhere. I guess I will just keep watching your channel. Be blessed and have a wonderful day. P.S. I live in Escondido, San Diego North County. Have not heard of you until KZitem.

Yes, I agree. The culture in Corinth was one of intelectual debate and rhetorical speeches which were used to persuade people of the popular philosophical arguments of the day. Paul steps into this culture and comes against it by saying that the gospel of the Kingdom does not fight back in the same way (by persuasive speeches) but we have a divine power that destroys the false idiologies and philosophical views in people's minds. In other words, I read the "take every thought captive" statement more about bringing your idiologies and worldviews in to line with a kingdom worldview.
@briangeiger9307

But… Issues in 1 and 2 Corinthian were not doctrinal heresy, but rather immorality., Paul said in 1 Cor 5:1that such immorality exists in Corinth church that does not exist even among the Gentiles. That was the fire Paul was fighting. The only doctrinal issue in both books was 1 Cor 15:12 where some don’t believe in resurrection of the dead. That is still less severe than heresy about Christ. The verses before and after 2 Cor 10:2-6 were not talking about doctrinal heresy. Rather, in verse 2, some claimed Paul “walked according to the flesh”. So the opening salvo was the claim that Paul is immoral just like them. Paul is ready “to punish all disobedience”. Punishment is related to sin. You correct doctrinal heresy, but punish sin. So now comes the difficult verse: Destroying speculations and “lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God”. “Speculation” and knowledge” can mean doctrinal heresy, but what other meaning can the word “knowledge” have? Colossians 1:9 “you may be filled with the knowledge of His will, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord”. What does “knowledge” of God mean? It means to know the will of God. Colossians 1:9 further say “bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God”. So you know God’s will, you do it, you bear fruit, and you know more of God’s will. That iteration is the “knowledge” of God. Therefore, “destroying speculations” would be destroying sinful thoughts. When you are deep in sin, you will believe God approves of promiscuity because it feels good. Is a speculation to make you believe you are not in sin. That is what 1 John warned about saying you have not sinned. Holding every thought captive would be what Jesus said, if you look with lust in your heart, you committed adultery. Pure in thought. Certainly, the verse can apply to doctrinal heresy as well. Obedience to Christ in thoughts is the message.
@joelpierce1453
2 жыл бұрын
@@briangeiger9307 No, that's not accurate. I don't know what translation you're using, but "speculations" is better translated as arguments, and even if that weren't the case, "speculations" does not mean sinful thoughts. That's a huge stretch. You're also conflating two different uses of the word knowledge from two different passages. It's like you didn't even watch the video. Read also in the preceding chapter where is says that submission comes from confession of the gospel, therefore confession of the gospel is set as precedent for submitting to Christ. And, I have to add that although you say you merely correct heresy and punish sin, heresy and blasphemy go hand in hand, so by your own rule, punishment should accompany that correction.

Just a great book suggestion for the person asking question 19: Surviving a Spiritually Mismatch in Marriage by Lee Strobel - who was an atheist who eventually became a Christian. He offers some real and practical tips on how to live out your Christian life despite the unbelief of your spouse. I love how he ends the book by saying: “You can be transformed to become more and more like Jesus, not despite your circumstances of a mismatched marriage, but because of them!”. May you experience God’s grace, love and hope as you continue to grow in faith and reliance on Him!

Also, it wasn't mentioned here, but the verses describing a believing spouse staying married to an unbelieving spouse are important too. I fully agree with what Mike referenced, but I always found 1 COR 7:12-16 to be an additional help in "living peaceably" with your spouse regardless. I can certainly see how other religions would be hostile toward the Christian, but to the believer, who has a role in representing Christ to his/her spouse, this would not be the case.

Thanks, I'll have to look at that book. I found myself in this same situation- truly saved by Christ at 39 years old but with an unbelieving wife and children. At first I thought I would best serve God by volunteering at church multiple times a week (and if the wife was jealous or mad, that was HER problem) but I see came to see that I wasn't loving her like Christ loves the church -- I was not serving my family and instead feeding my ego (because my church NEEDED ME). Mike's answer here is great and I'm sure Strobel's book is too, thanks! I've since backed way off serving God through volunteerism (though I find it such a blessing) and instead I find myself focusing more on my immediate family.

There are so many interesting questions I have for when I'm in heaven. Leviathan is being added to the list. Instead its the infallible word of God delivered through his people to make sure we are equipped for every good work.

Reading the description of Leviathan in Job, the closest living beast I would likely compare it to would be an extremely large crocodile. Doesn't explain the fire-breathing unless that part is poetic, but that helps me understand some of the power and danger that such a creature would present to Job, and hence the challenge that God is presenting him with.

On the denominational question I must add that I had great difficulty (thankfully this is no longer an issue) for a long time joining churches in significant capacity because I am a highly opinionated person and was entirely too quick to eye roll what I thought was a false teaching coming from the pulpit. Example: Calvinism is rampant in my community and I think it’s a serious error. Nonetheless I was able to sit under a Calvinist pastor and respect who them for several years now because I realized that while I think it’s a serious exegetical error and mischaracterizes the nature of God- that’s not what your average Calvinist believes. More importantly, there is likely some way I am in error about God. Ideally, I would iron those errors out over time with careful study, but an attitude of humility demands that on issues which are not essential, we must accept some level of error in our brothers just as we have some error in ourselves.

I like your analysis of the leviathan. I really love that passage of scripture and in my study I tend to lean towards the leviathan not being a literal animal but maybe a person. The leviathan is a sea creature or a beast from the sea. Looking at how the bible talks about the leviathan in Isaiah 27:1 and Psalm 74 it maybe that God is describing the Antichrist. Job is an enigma to me and I love it. God's word is so fun to try and piece together and I look forward to finding the correct answer one day. Great job Pastor Mike! Yeah we actually had a conversation about modesty in our church at one point. It was a conversation between me and some of my brethren. Because we noticed that the women in our worship was often wearing leather tights, and we thought it wasn't biblical or appropriate for a worship leader to wear that on stage, but we are part of a Hillsong church in Sweden, so views like that will not be taken kindly or even be recognised by our leaders, so yeah

A follow up on the social Justice Gospel question. Some passages they will use from Luke are any that knocks down the rich and lifts up the poor. For example 1: 52-53 in the Magnificat. Luke 18:18-30 is a favorite in those circles and Luke 16, the entire chapter. There is more, but you get the main idea. Many of my colleagues try to paint Jesus as mainly concern with social justice movements. And it is no coincidence that you will find these people are open socialists and even Marxists. Reading their ideology into the scripture like you said.

Hey Mike! I’m loving the new videos weekly along with the old ones daily and you have helped me straighten out my flimsy theology. I was born again late in life; a very rich experience ten years ago that resonates like new to this day. The experience of an old repentant sinner is radically different from that of a little child “accepting” Jesus as their Saviour. I don’t doubt that we can be saved at a very early age (3+) but isn’t the Gospel more meaningful to an adult that is lost than it is to a child who is innocent? Isn’t salvation for the lost sinner we all become and not the “unfinished” person at 3 or 4?

I like the idea of honoring Christ as a motive for how to dress modesty. I grew up with the modesty culture and I feel like often times the motive given for dressing modesty was off. It seemed like the responsibility was put more on the girls and how they dressed and not so much responsibility put on the guys for how they would respond.

So thoughts in this instance mean ideas or beliefs rather than than thought life? I agree that we should not become paranoid about our thought life, but I still think wicked thoughts and desires are an expression of our underlying sin, our rebellion against God. This just shows more of how cleansing the blood of Christ is!

I think having the ability to choose to love is empowering! It means we can do what God asks of us without the associated feelings. This seems to me a power that can move mountains. I can choose to love my enemies. Defeating any thoughts or feelings that won’t glorify God. I need love for my enemies or people whom I see as enemies, but may not be. They may be my sisters or brothers in Christ that need love from their fellow sisters and brothers in Christ. They and I, need the love of God. The love we are supposed to embody. Love can be practice through forgiveness; Blessing others with grace as God has bless us with His grace. Leviathan seems to symbolize the evil one. That only God and His power can tame the evil one. The description sounds similar to a dragon like creature.

Come to him, repent, and he will take that painful burden of sin off of your shoulders and exchange it for a beautiful relationship with him. Come all who are weary says Jesus, believe in the Father and his Son and you will have everlasting life. If you’re going through a difficult time please reach out to me and we can pray together. I agree this verse is not necessarily about internal thought struggles, but would add that it pertains also to general holding of beliefs, ideologies, etc. that are not in accordance with the truth of the gospel. Truth is the weapon that destroys the fortresses and strongholds of whatever exalts itself against the knowledge of God. I see bringing every thought captive to the obedience of Christ as the truths of the gospel being brought to bear on the lies of whatever people have been believing, personally and within their culture and religions. An example would be Paul in Athens.

I’m truly sorry to hear that. Maybe that’s the case but we can all stand to be more loving at times for sure, that’s a good way to be to admit that. And it’s why we need grace for each other, not the opposite. You can’t control what she does, only yourself. Good for you for honouring God and staying faithful to Him-He matters the most! When that costs you in this life, rest assured: Mark 10:29-30 🙂

Hi Mike really enjoy your weekly Q&A sessions. On Episode 59 a question came up about Leviathan, and you said you haven't made a detailed examination of Job yet. A good book on this topic is 'Hidden Treasures in the book of Job' by Hugh Ross. Dr. Ross states that Leviathan (and earlier Behemoth) are examples of nephesh animals that are extremely difficult to tame. The descriptions given in the book of Job are given in poetic prose (to facilitate memorization) and describe the crocodile (leviathan) and hippopotamus (behemoth). These are illustrations used to show how difficult it is to tame a human heart, and why we need a relationship with God.

@@blacksheep6365 Not so much the tail of the hippo but the hind quarters - hippo’s are well known for their ability to turn over boats entering their territory (they’re highly territorial) - they’re considered more dangerous than lions in the river systems they inhabit

@@davidseery1147 but Behemoth is supposed to have a tail "like a cedar tree" if I recall. Cedar trees are strong and tall, and tail-shqped in that they are generally one "stalk" tapering at the crown (top of the tree) - like a hippo tail, but MASSIVE. Hippopotamus hindquarters do not resemble a cedar tree in any way, except that they're thick/strong. I figure if God uses an image to describe something, it probably LOOKS like the image God used to describe it

I'm mixed on having very young children in church service. My son was 11 months old when we took him to church and he only made loud noise when the pastor was speaking. I got upset and asked my wife to walk him around. And she did, but later sat down and played videos *on silent* for our son so he would be quiet. Personally, i find it inappropriate to bring children so young to service and to use phones. Fortunately out church has a chapel area for newer parents where children can make noise, and the entry area has seating and tv's with the service.

Regarding seals (58:44)...I had an "ah ha" moment when learning art history and the subject of cylinder seals and stamp seals came up, because it added a lot of nuance to word's use in the Bible which is missing from our modern culture (granted, cylinder seals are older than the seals used in Roman times). We do have wax seals which sort of function the same way, but seals functioned more like signatures nowadays in that they were used to authenticate documents and also functioned like an artist's signature on their work. They were a mark of ownership but also of authenticity. People would use them to mark their possessions, and artisans would seal their works as a sign of both authenticity and proof of quality--this was something they made that they were willing to put their name and reputation behind.

Momma bear you’re used to your baby’s cries, coos, all noises, so you may have trouble recognizing if your baby is disturbing others. It doesn’t mean they don’t want you there, perhaps they were frustrated that you weren’t able to recognize baby was drawing attention away from pastor and onto them.

We once attended church that had this view on serving after divorce. My friend had been married to her second husband for over 30 years. Her first husband had an affair and left her after his mistress became pregnant. He left her with 3 small children. She later remarried a good Christian man and they stayed married until their deaths. The divorce was Biblical, according to Jesus, yet they didn't want her to serve in care of children. Not only was she saved after the divorce...so she was a New Creation, but her ex had committed adultery and left her. It was done to her. She had no control. It was really heartbreaking to watch. They made her submit to an "interview" to grill her over the past before they would allow her to serve.
