I am not minimalist, I'm just a middle aged man who is trying to just simplify his life. I have my parents wedding gift fine China that I use every day it has seen more use in the last 6 months than the last 49 years. No microwave, house phone, dishwasher, don't do coffee. I'm bald so bar soap works fine head to feet for me. 3 dogs, "inherited" one when kids moved to an apartment. Cats belong in a barn. As to your makeup, you don't need it, you are naturally beautiful.

We are both huge dog/cat people but at this time in life, we've decided to wait at least another year or two before adopting another pet. For now, we volunteer at the SPCA :) Great video... I agree with the shoes, makeup/hair products and specialty dishes; we've pared down considerably during our last move.

aaaannnnndd THIS is what's going to save us and future generations. Stop listening to the million/billion dollar corporations telling you to BUY, BUY, BUY, CONSUME, CONSUME, CONSUME! We've been without cable and home phone, pets etc for some years. I don't miss it! I appreciate your list enormously! We all have way too much stuff. My wife and I just bought our first house late 2014. We had boxes EVERYWHERE which were all pushed up into the attic. We've spent the last 4+ years going through these boxes and realizing we have been holding onto a lot of non-sense. Why hold onto things you might only use once a year or longer? It's clutter. Clutter is so frustrating. I was getting self conscious thinking about how minimal we were living, where everyone I know has so much stuff...and they want more. I thought we were weird for wanting LESS. Watching videos like these confirm, we're not crazy. SO, thank you!!

Trustworthy friends or cat sitters make all the difference. I also have automatic feeders and cameras in my apt so I can always check on them (and know when someone enters my apt) whenever that "I feel like something is wrong" anxiety hits me. They are definitely investment devices since none of the good ones are cheap but so worth it in the long run for peace of mind. To be fair though... Most of the footage my cameras capture is just my cats sleeping... But then I can make sure they are breathing 😁

What I'm getting out of this is that it's really according to your needs what you have and what you don't have. So I for example have a vacuum cleaner even though the appartment I'm living is completely laid with tiles, but then I do vacuum almost twice or three times every week. On the other side I do not own a broom. Getting rid of the kettle would drive me mad because I drink a lot of tea. Always using the small pot would take up a lot more time and drive up our electricity bill so much that I think it's better to have a kettle.

WOW!! sometime I do wish to live as a minimalist like you but its too late. I got used to having these things. what do you do when you get a gift that you don't own? 1. car - too late. I bought a brand new car (stuck on car note) 2. tv - I own 2. We didn't have a tv in our room until we bought a new one for the living room that are much bigger. 3. cable/DVDs - We don't have cable but I do own a bunch of dvds 4. Couch - gotta have it to sit down to watch tv 5. cd/Stereo - I have cds from the past. who buys them nowadays though. i already got a stereo that come with the house we live in. 6. Alarm clock - I have a big alarm clock to see what time it is in the morning but dont use the alarm. I use my phone as my alarm. 7. Home phone - I dont have a home phone either. 8. pets - dogs lover but I dont own one. like you said they too expensive. even kids I dont want. 9. tons of shoes - I have tons of shoes 10. tons of make up - i have simple make up items 11. hair products - I have 1 shampoo, conditional, hair spray, hair serum to protect from the heat. 12. toaster - have 1 but barely use 13. microwave - must have, we dont have time when heading out to work 14. coffee maker - i actually have 1 for free. but we mostly use hot water machine since we use instant coffee 15. kettle - must have, i heat up water to put in my rubber hot water bottle 16. vacuum - must have, I have carpet =( 17. electric toothbrush - must have, they actually clean my teeth better 18. loofah - haha i just bought this yesterday, must have to get the spot you may miss 19. watch - must have. I track my heart rate and exercise time when i go running instead of using my phone 20. special dishware - i wouldnt say special, but we need each dish ware to prepare either to take to work or store them in the refrigerate. now this is sad.

I have always found it interesting that in a lot of minimalism focused videos and vlogs, theres is always comments joking about "being poor=minimalist", which in fact have a lot of similarities, but I think that this can open a discussion about the different types of upbringing, a lot of things mentioned in the video I had never used until I reach adulthood not because my family was so poor that couldn't afford them, is just that we were not acostumed to buying or using these things, if I was raised among them of course I would feel that all that is necessary for living. So I think that if you are used to living with a lot of possessions and then become a minimalist, of course you are going to feel like, for example getting rid of a vacumm cleaner or a dishwasher machine is a huge change even though other people (whom are not minimalists) live without any of these things and don't find them necessary. I think it is all matter of perspective.

I'd say most of the things you don't own I also don't own except I do have a car ( when I lived in Edmonton I didn't need one bc public transport was so good but down here there is no pedestrian planning or good public transport - I think Canadians have it made that way) , I have a dog, a tea kettle, and a vacuum for said dog :) I do have a solar watch but It was given to me by my mother 20 years ago. I am also minimalistic with my toiletries and products and also use arrowroot powder for dry shampoo. Your diet is also identical to mine. I really like watching your videos because your way of living makes sense to me. Keep doing a great job and inspiring others!!

I don't own most of these things either.except for a couch, which also can be used as a bed if I have guests over, a ceramic kettle thatI love andI recently purchased a vacuum cleaner after about 10 years of not having it:it seems cleaning is still much easier and more effective with it.

I have only one cooking knife, one small chopping board, one pair of scissors, a few bowls of dishes and plates. I don’t have a kettle, a coffee maker, and an oven. I only regularly use three pairs of shoes. My place is a mini studio and I love it. I like to be more minimalistic. Thank you everyone for sharing.

Ive been contemplating Minimalism for years(even though I didnt know it was called Minimalism at first) and Im finally going to commit to it, its hard because atm I dont know which items make me feel fulfilled and happy outside of my Art supplies and maybe my Laptop and a few books. Im trying figure out how to live simply and declutter my life. I dont own much as it is, but I still feel what I do own is a bit excessive. Thanks for this video, Im just trying to watch other Minimalists and learn from examples set by others.

Living minimily doesnt mean getting rid of absolutely everything. Something things you can have because they make you happy. Its living with you absolutely need and absolutely love and to live more intentionaly.

i have chosen to live optimally but couch is a must. its important to sit cosyly:D. pets are not for owning. they are part of the family and starting to live more optimized is not time to abandon your feline family member my cofee maker is a glass jar and filters which i just put on top of the glass jar and filtrate the boiled cofee mix through that

I’m a minimalist in progress. I think what people may not understand is that for YOU, Meghan, those twenty items are not needed. For others, there are items that, while many may consider them not essential, like an investment quality stereo system, if music soothes your soul; or an adopted pet [team 🐈 here]; artwork that speaks to you; top quality cookware and knives if you live for cooking, they are so much more than things to that person. My best friend has a stressful life, and would go bonkers without his music. To each their own. The message is to eliminate anything that is of no value to YOU.

I'm glad you did have pets at one time. Not having a pet is not a bad thing, it just means you save a lot of money. A fuzzy blanket can help if you feel the need to pet something. My mom does that. You're lifestyle is great because you're not adding to the garbage problem and you can get up and go at a moment's notice with out without worry. How about books? Probably read online. 😊

I have four children and I don’t own most of these things but I just can’t live without my car, vacuum and coffee machine (for obvious reasons). Visitors do go looking for the couch and ask why I don’t have a toaster or microwave but we just don’t need them! Thanks for sharing!

I have a question about minimalism. I was wondering what do you do when you get a bunch of things you don't want or need for Christmas/birthdays. I only like to keep things I absolutely love or use a lot that are purposeful to me. I just feel really bad giving away/donating, or throwing out a gift someone gave me. Sometimes I try to regift too. Maybe you don't have this problem anymore because your friends and family probably know you are a minimalist. Could you maybe make a video with some tips?
@meghanlivingstone
5 жыл бұрын
I know exactly what you mean! I still do receive gifts that I don't have a use for and I'll either re-gift, give away to someone who would love it, or just try my best to let others know that I don't need certain things.

My partner is an audiophile and has a room dedicated to his listening pleasure. Won’t be getting rid if any LPs, turntables, etc any time soon. 😂 We live in the suburbs and hence need a car. However, we have become a one-car family and find it quite easy to make it work for both of us. I am very happy to take transit into Toronto for business events. Less stress and time to just chill with my thoughts.

Now I really want to get rid of my tea kettle, it never stays in quite clean enough and the whistle is quite obnoxious. I have 2 barn kitties that are outside because I’m deathly allergic, and 3 dogs! Love them! I’d almost probably be a cat person though if I could tolerate them.

A lot of things you don't own you've simply switched to another form of use; i.e. TV programming switched to a tablet, CD music switched to your phone. You're not really doing without these experiences; you still enjoy them, but in a different way. And if you don't make toast, then it's not such a big deal to not own a toaster.

I'm not close to a cell phone but I can see how useful it can be. It actually replaces your TV, Cable, DVD, Home Land Phone, Alarm, Watch, computer, Banking, etc etc etc 👍

I prefer to own physical movies, specifically VHS tapes as opposed to Netflix. With Netflix you're always paying for something you may not even use that often, I know I didn't. I have a Blu-ray/VCR combo and can watch VHS tapes via HDMI and it looks just as good as DVD depending on the tape. Massive selection, very cheap, extremely easy to use, and makes me feel more at home living a minimalist lifestyle.

We don't have several of these either. No microwave, no cable/satellite or TV channels (we just have TV & kids have movies), no internet except for our mobiles, we lived 2 years without paper towels, and no clothes dryer! I do have a Keurig, but short of that and a crock pot I have no other kitchen appliances.

Many of these things I don't/haven't owned.... however, I do have a car because I live in a very rural area. I did have to get a vehicle in 2013 after not having one for a decade. I have a significant drive to work. Many of the items you mentioned I grew up without and never saw the point of as an adult. For example: we had no car/tv/gaming system/computer/dishwasher growing up.
