The more I study from other designers and artists on youtube, the more I'm realizing that college mostly only taught me how to use the tools (very slow, much expense), and hardly anything about designing for success. I've also come across many tutorial videos and webinars that made me regret college altogether as I could have saved so much time and money. My degree didn't get me any full time jobs, but my learned skills brought most of my clients to me by word of mouth, most returning for more, with very little networking effort (but to viewers, DO network!). My life advice would be to skip college altogether and go straight to the online mentors, where you won't be put into a lifetime of debt for a degree that will mostly be ignored. It is my personal opinion that if you've developed your skills well enough, your work should speak for itself. *This is only my perspective based on my own life experience, and is not intended to be in any way offensive, but to contribute to discussion.

Jen, Thanks for you POV. I agree about the fact that formal design education is sorely lacking in the real-world graphic business skills building department. That is one reason why I am doing what I am doing here on YT.Sharing all the stuff I learned AFTER I got out of school - the really important stuff that you need to survive and succeed. The one thing you didn't mention though it that school does teach you aesthetics - and that is very hard to teach online. You can also really notice it when someone has not had a formal education when it comes to composition specifically. I know lots of folks who know the tools, but don't have the aesthetic.
@jenmallarapu9906
6 жыл бұрын
There are definitely those who know the tools and don't have aesthetic, I agree. Perhaps it's just my college that was really underwhelming, but they didn't teach me much about composition, and definitely didn't teach me anything about using the golden ratio or the purpose of overshooting in typography (those are just a few things I'm learning on youtube currently). That's sort of what I meant by designing for success, as aesthetic is vitally important.

It's good to re-watch this video. I find the most important thing out of all that is to listen to feedback and don't take it negatively. I used to do that and it's only been the last year where I really have gone "hang on a minute, just listen, accept and create something even better". It can' t get any worse and you find yourself realising that it can make a huge difference not just for your own work but how your business runs. This should go with any type of business, even Gordon Ramsey is always obsessed by feedback and taking on board criticism as he just wants to make the experience even better for the customer.

honestly one of the most useful and inspiring video on design that i've watched - i feel like if you master even one of the given advices, you would already be a way more successful designer than you are currently! while a bunch of other videos on graphic design or design in general on youtube are mostly created not by experienced designers but by amateurs who don't seem like they know what they are talking about (and you see it when you look up their portfolio and other content on youtube), you know that this video is created by a professional designer. if you haven't, i encourage you to look up Philip's work and portfolio - it's amazing. The problem I am facing right now is all the companies I worked for; I am the only graphic designer so I have to rely on online design sites and books for design inspirations. Whenever I completed artworks and sent to clients for their confirmation, they happily accepted without voicing out any strong criticisms/ feedbacks so often I have no ideas where to improve. Furthermore my social circle is small since I am kind of introvert resulting I don't have much connections.Though I already spent 7 years in this line, there are still people who viewed my portfolio states my level is intern/junior. I am not sure if I should give up and go for another career.
@PhilipVanDusen
5 жыл бұрын
Terra, have you ever thought of going to work for a company or agency that has a much bigger design staff? That would be my suggestion. Even if you have to go in a a junior level. You will make many more connections, learn more and benefit from the guidance and mentorship of a Creative Director. Isolated on your own - you growth will be (and sounds like it is) much slower.
@TerraWindVampire
5 жыл бұрын
I did try applying for those companies and urgencies of pure designs you suggested. However the biggest problem here in my country is they mostly prefer those who were already experienced seniors and professionals. They often rejected designers around my level since their main reasons is either lazy to train/guide or worst 'look down' and 'abuse' us to the point we decided to give up. Another thing is ageism; They felt the older the designers is, the usefulness in them is pointless.
@PhilipVanDusen
5 жыл бұрын
Terra - my only suggestion is : NEVER give up. Try to see the *opportunity* in all of this - not just the obstacles. Focus on the solution that will work for YOU - not the problems in the *system*. We all know that many times the odds and the system are stacked against us. But there is always a way to persevere.

Hello everybody! As a beginner in this sphere i have one question when you start designing something, is it better to make an easy one and do not complicate your life, or do some kind of innovation (like a cool design) to mess with their heads but at the same time to gain knowledge of how work design. im asking this question because i have a project where i need to create your own furniture so i need advice of professionals.

To be honest, one cannot guarantee to be a good Designer having and edge over others by following any particular steps, yes they can make a difference but it something inherent as well, one should be having an artistic mind before pursuing a career as such, so in my opinion there are no particular rules or regulations for success, it's just talent plus luck and persistence, otherwise many people are putting long education aside before hiring anyone, people may disagree with my opinion, but that's what I personally think about it. 🙂
