Friends, archery hunting can be an amazing experience and getting prepared for the upcoming season is mission critical. I like to shoot local 3D Matches and practice in the backyard range, to prepared for the Fall. I shoot either practice tips (that mimic) my broad-heads or I'll actually shoot my broad-heads...this ensures the arrow will fly in the same manor in the field. I heard this tip from Cameron Hanes, a World-class Archer and Big Game Hunter, and have adopted it into my routine.
My test for accuracy is simple, can you cover the inside circle of a roll of Duck-Tape (which is similar to the size of a deer heart), if you can't, keep practicing. The reason is simple, most shots I've taken on Whitetail Deer have come from 17-25 yards. I hunt from tree climbers, ladder-stands and ground blinds, so ambush hunting most of my shots are close. So, you'll need to be able to pull-off a tight group when the pressures on and your heart jacked-up...Buck-fever is real, don't let anyone tell you different. Shoot well and shoot often. I would rather someone shoot consistently a few arrows each week, vs. shooting 40-50 arrows and not shooting as often. Lastly, if you never tried a single pin sight, give it a whirl, HHA makes some incredible sights for bow hunters.
