It's very interesting how RF couln't read Rafa's game at that point and how a 17 year-old kid could keep that tennis monster under control. At this point, Roger already had all the big scalps under his belt. Not only that, but he humiliated Agassi only a half year and Hewitt a couple of weeks earlier both times on home soils. And here you can see some kind of puzzledom and a bit of fear especially after those huge lefty forehands. This rivalry is a treasure not only for the tennis but for the world heritage.:D

Federer played very tentative in this match, not at his best. Nadal brought beyond his A-game at the time, swinging from the heels and nothing to lose playing the #1 player. I always felt that had Federer won this match, his approach to Nadal and his head-to-head with Nadal would have been significantly better. Once Nadal saw he could beat Fed, and with a simple strategy of high bouncing topspin from Nadal’s lefty forehand into Fed’s one handed backhand, he was in Federer’s head. The rivalry with Nadal certainly led to Federer improving his backhand - especially hitting a topspin backhand down the line taking the ball on the rise, while ball was still in hitting zone. Nadal’s unusual style posed problems for everyone. The only guy I saw truly just break down Nadal’s game via a huge 1-2 serve-forehand punch was Robin Soderling, and then Soderling got sick and had a short career.
