And most of them see university as a place to throw parties, find their other half and make fun instead of acquiring the skills that are of good use in their future career. University is not somewhere for honeymoon. A university degree doesn't mean that one's life is now complete and no further effort is needed to succeed. Other than being a ticket into one's first job and for future career advancements, a college degree is simply useless. An SPM slip doesn't mean that one's journey has ended, but instead it means otherwise, the beginning of his journey. They wasted their 4 years in college doing unnecessary things and not realizing that they're driving themselves towards the dire situation that they now face, and now the whole country has to deal with this together and clean up their mess. I'm in one of the IPTAs and to be honest but not to incite argument, that's how it is in many Malaysian universities.

It was the deterioration of the Malaysian education system that lead to the unemployment of graduates as graduates are incompetent in the job market. If you run a company dealing with Europeans or American or Chinese market will you employ graduates who can’t read or speak English? Chinese is not the most important language but English is the international language which you can’t deny. The set back of Malaysia today was due to the prideful group of people who lead the country backwards in education. Stay ahead of need and machines. Having said this, what the gentleman advised is correct. Education and employment is not exclusive. There are so many quite successful policies overseas. Doing some low skill jobs from start will do some help especially when you need to build up some experience and understanding of the job process. At the same time, one can start jump ship if feeling there's nothing more to learn or to give. Slowly but surely by the time experience builds up, salaries will increase and expectations will be met. This is the real world... not a fairytale world. Anything can happen. Opportunities are out there. Getting the right job in a right environment isn't easy. Not everyone is that lucky either.

And after all those 3 or 4 crappy years, low skilled jobs isn't the qualm in itself. I applied for QA Admin at a Malaysian renowned Spice Company, I was kinda offered something vary though, QA Inspector. They claimed only the titles vary but in job scope, similar. At the end of the day, it was nothing less than a blue collar work. Checking raw materials, using spade, weighing loads on pallets, packing and all those stuffs, though I graduated in a HR major myself. To blame the grads itself, is not okay, look at the unlikely demands of the Malaysian employers as well. Somewhat, they have to hire us but they give such a buildup that their firm isn't operating in Malaysia but in the USA though. And parents on the extreme with their own expectations and tantrums. Even if we want to go and involve ourselves, in a job or career pathway varied from our degree, like into the news stream, journalism, arts. All of their blunts questions will start to appear, i.e. "What can you earn from this?", "How do you expect to grow via this job?" "Do you think this job offers the salary that is right for your qualification?" etc, though grads themselves put that aside most of the times! We are situational prisoners most of the time with the typical Malaysian mentality misting all around.

Some are unemployed but many more are underemployed, Goverment try to encourage more higher education society in Malaysia but the job market aren't up with the growing number of graduates. The failing exposure about this matter create large disparity between expectation versus reality among our graduates. Most who under education debt are reluctantly taking low/mid skill job and medium income level (if they are lucky) which even the employer are having mixed decision to hire them as their mindset (recruiter/HR) wanted those who here for the job in long run. As there are prevalent bias that graduate will simply jump out for better job opportunity once they have them (which is not wrong for self development which benefits the economy in the long run). In the end it leave a distasteful flavor on the youth life as the overwhelming expectation from society to succeed but when the same society failed them, thus, its hard to motivated oneself to further self-development and escape unemployment and underemployment.

Air Asia worked when it said "everyone can fly". Even though in reality the slogan was way off the truth AirAsia did its best and it was profitable. But when politicians told Malays they could be doctors, engineers, and kinds of professions without providing them with matching conditions it was a disaster in the making. The Malay led government created the graduates by lowering the standards. It was fine at the start as Malay graduates were far and few and there were enough vacancies as well disqualified non-Malays to keep up the services. The problem worsened when universities continued to dump Malay graduates, be they qualify or otherwise, into the job market not able to absorbing them. That was bad politics plus equally disasters planning. In countries like USA, they allow the forces of supply and demand to work properly. In Germany planners know very well society is a pyramid, you can't have two or more prime minister's at one time, you can't turn everyone into a doctor. Hence, wages didn't contribute to consumption expenditure and additional profits were reinvested in the Outward paying sectors of the economy. The labor wage growth rate (CGAR) failed to catch up with the profits growth and reinvestment rate of the capitalists. Such a strategy had both advantages and disadvantages! ADV => Real Economy grew tremendously and so did the productive capacity and capital assets were created. DISADV => Living standards did not rise at the same pace and skilled workers got demotivated. The reason is simple. Too many private universities pop-up like no tomorrow, to create jobs for the previous generation to be lecturers, staff, and thus giving a huge debt to the next generation to pay the fees, to make the students become lecturers and the things go on. Lol

Problems is business bosses read only PNL but they are not employing locals but foreigners. Everybody knows the reasons despite high workers levy. So how to solve? Government policies that some countries have but not Malaysia can reduce this issue. Like ratio of one to every 4 foreigners. Now we have tvet which implemented by other countries. In Singapore see what their PSB is doing.

Blame the government. Think about it, in Australia, even a low-end job has a higher salary. In Australia, all housebuilders are locals and are well paid. Even grass cutters earn a lot of money in Australia. Local farmers in Australia also earn a high salary without the need for foreign workers but instead helped by the government will the machinery, borrowed lands, etc. Majorities of companies in Malaysia belong to cronies who hire foreign workers. Also, the government is not always being truthful when it comes to what job industries that are no longer in demand. Eg. Nurses, IT courses are oversupplied while in farming and construction industries are in low demand.

1)Numbers of graduates > number of jobs offered. Too many graduates but little jobs are offered for those graduates. 2) Malaysia average salary is too low vs Malaysian currency is too low compared to other countries like Singapore dollar. If a low salary is offered for fresh graduates, fresh graduates would rather to find jobs in overseas for better remunerations ( eg Singapore -> which they can save more money by utilising currency advantage). 3) Employers want cheap labours but experienced staffs .4)For private sectors, all fresh graduates who have applied any jobs should have mastered English for a good English interview presentation.

I'm pissed than many malaysian companies asked for mandarin proficiency and stuff, but I'm more pissed that our government didn't foresee this & utilize the many chinese malaysians living in malaysia. With so many chinese, surely we could get some to teach mandarin even in national schools. It is a NATIONAL school for god sake. Put some tamil or even arabic for those conservative islamic malays in national schools to teach languages for exposure, not solely just for exams. Better yet, for extra languages classes that a kid take, it should be more of an exposure instead of test-taking, stress-inducing exams. Let the kids have fun with languages and people of different races. That is what future generation great again.

Low quality graduates, unrealistic expectations by graduates, not educating the young to meet market needs. Companies do not mind paying more for the right candidates but in most of the time, they just possess a piece of paper that says they are educated but in reality in most instances they are way below expectations.

I think the government should focus on reformating the education system, from kindergarden to high school, eg, kindergarden stage, teacher should teach parent to instill correct cultural value and languages into the children. From standard 1 to 3 go to chinese school, standard 3 to 6 go to indian school, form 1 to 3 go to japan school, form 3 to 6 go to malay school so we all can have more exposure to different cultures and values. At unversity, it is cultural festival. If education is all about career and job , it will be difficult to match. I think government should focus mindset shift programme, because most of my friend who can't study know and dont like study ,will try to find other alternative solution.
