Welcome to our deep dive into the fascinating design of the 200 Peso Mexican Banknote, also known as the Type G note. Join us as we explore the rich history and intricate details that make this currency so unique.
The 200 Peso banknote measures 139 by 65 millimeters and is made from durable cotton paper. It has been in circulation since September 2, 2019, and is predominantly green in color. This banknote is a vibrant celebration of Mexico's heritage, history, and natural beauty.
The obverse side of the banknote vividly depicts the beginning of Mexico’s War of Independence. It features two prominent figures: Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and José María Morelos y Pavón.
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla: Known for his iconic "Grito de Dolores" (Cry of Dolores) on September 16, 1810, Hidalgo is remembered as the father of the independence movement. His call to arms marked the start of Mexico's struggle for independence from Spanish rule.
José María Morelos y Pavón: After Hidalgo's death, Morelos took up the mantle of leadership in the independence movement. Revered as the “Siervo de la Nación” (Servant of the Nation), his contributions were crucial in continuing the fight for freedom.
Alongside their portraits, you will find a vignette of the Campana de Dolores (Bell of Dolores), symbolizing the historic moment when Hidalgo rang the bell to gather the people and ignite the independence movement.
To commemorate the autonomy of Banco de México, a special legend was added in 2019: "25 Aniversario de la Autonomía 1994-2019" (25th Anniversary of Central Bank Autonomy). Starting from May 20, 2024, for a temporary period, this will be updated to "30 Aniversario de la Autonomía 1994-2024" (30th Anniversary of Central Bank Autonomy).
The reverse side of the banknote celebrates Mexico’s natural heritage, specifically its scrubland and desert ecosystems. The image of a majestic royal eagle represents the biodiversity and resilience of these ecosystems. Located in Sonora, the Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is showcased to highlight the beauty and ecological significance of the region.
The 200 Peso Mexican Banknote is not just a piece of currency, but a piece of history and a work of art. Its design pays homage to the leaders of Mexico's independence and showcases the natural beauty of its landscapes, all while incorporating state-of-the-art security features. Whether you're a numismatist or simply someone interested in the stories behind the currency, this banknote is a testament to Mexico's rich cultural and historical tapestry.
