@@dtexas2964 Racing in any open wheel series, particularly in the '90s, was a dangerous proposition. Hell, major changes in safety design didn't start occurring until the mid 2010s with the HALO in Formula 1 and the Aeroscreen in IndyCar. Same could be said for stock cars with the HANS devices and stricter seat designs before Earnhardt's death.

@@RandysRacingPlace633 Meh, I disagree. Fuck the IRL. I just re-watched the Chicagoland 2002 finish and it was relatively boring. A close finish doesn't equate to an interesting one. The amount of lead changes between Andretti and Montoya is what makes this one of the best. Chicagoland 2002 was a close finish, but the cars were dead even for 5 laps without a change in position.

@TheZadak the current indycars are normally aspirated and make around 630 hp with a maximum rpm of 10,500 rpm. the amazing turbocharged champ cars in this video were running at 16,000 rpm and making around 900 hp depending on the amount of boost they were allowed at each track. in 2003 (i think, it may have been 2004) champ car switched over to cosworth engines that were limited to 12,000 rpm, and made around 750 hp depending on the allowed amount of boost.

And the packed stands. races in 7 different countries. Budgets that are 10 times what they are now. It was just a great time for motor sorts. I'm American but lived in Sweden from 91 to 98 and Eurosport would have F1 then directly to the start of the Indy Cart. The mid 90's when Mansell was over here, it was peaking. even Senna was talking about driving the Indy 500. Technology made the cars quicker every year.

Tony George screwed up the 1996 Indy 500. CART was dumb to run the US 500 that year and cost them big time in the years after it. They never should have did that. It was about USAC and IMS trying to control open wheel racing especially Tony George along with Berine with it a little bit.
