Identical to the 98 Merc 40, 2 strk, 3 cyl. Thanks for showing each step. I needed to see the number of case alignment pins.

D Ray Smith also has a video just like this but goes through the oil change process well as instructions on properly aligning that top cover so it does not rub the shaft in his. Both are AWESOME videos and being the anal retentive terd I am, always like to get a "2nd opinion" (or watch more than one video on same subject) before trying any such project and both of these guys have great videos and are great mechanics.

Great video....I am used to doing a Johnson outboard and everything was sealed with gaskets or sealer.....all I saw was you using a heavy amount of grease and no gasket or sealer for this engine.......is it designed for water to escape yet most of the water go through cooling passages...or is it somehow sealed?

Thanks it helped me on my 94 Force 40 hp, until I went to put it back together, I look up inside the housing to insert the driveshaft and the driveshaft seal is unattached and tore. Any suggestions how to replace it?

I replaced an impeller and put the lower unit back on on my 2003 2 Stroke 40 HP Mercury outboard. I can get the engine into forward and reverse and into neutral. If I move the propeller by hand clockwise I hear a clicking/clunking noise 4 times per full rotation of the propeller. Is this normal? Most would never know unless you turned the prop by hand. With the motor running you could never hear it.

Yes that is normal .if you pull it in forward or reverse and turn it you hear it click. It has not clutch just gears

Does this motor have the auto oiler? Just wondering what you think about the auto oilers on these mercury. I just got a boat with this motor and I was wondering if I should do away with the auto oiler, and if so how to go about it.

Justin Bartlett its a 4 stroke

I have this exact motor on my tracker, and it is a 2 stroke. I too am curious if the auto Oiler is reliable. The 40hp 4stroke is quite a bit larger.

Had an older Johnson OMC 40 with the auto oilers and they were notorious for failing and blowing power heads. While it will be debated from now til the end of time and the pro's well as con's are quite clear, YES the oiler can be bypassed on this style of 2 stroke Merc 40 and we're planning on doing ours.... But not until we have the power head rebuilt after the lower cylinder chunked one of the pistons as a result of poor maintenance and neglect from the prior owner. Con's are clearly and same for any 2 stroke mixed 50 to 1, but I'd gladly take some extra yearly maintenance and an additional plug change once a season looooong over the expensive risk of that oiling system dropping a deuce and killing a motor or even the big expense to repair one of the auto oilers. kzitem.info/news/bejne/0HyZq2GQiXqelHY

I have done away with all of the oil injection on all my 2 stroke outboards. If I mix it I now it's right.
