Its unreal how so many self righteous people talk shit about this car when there's people driving 20 yr old corollas, he paid 10K for it and HE is happy with it, what is there to make fun of this guy about? It amazes me how so many people just cant resist the urge to put others down to make themselves feel better.

I have such a soft spot for the 3.4 liter 996 Carreras. So much of Porsche 911 history has been appealing to enthusiasts with more flares and wings and vents, and yeah of course I love me some 964 Turbo Ss and 993 Carrera RS 3.8s and 930s and all that jazz...but as much as the 996 cribbed the 986 componentry, I felt the slim fender look was a harkening back to the original 911. Just a slippery shape that was very clean, and the way they're aging, to my eyes, is proving that it was a good design. A 1999 911 that's well kept doesn't look 16 years old in terms of design.

+Euphorica I agree that lots of people talk shit about things they do not on, this is the internet after all. Having said that class action law suit don't come out of nowhere. And Porsche has been sued in such as suit for 2001 to 2005 models using the M96 engine. That is fact. It's one of the things that kept me from buying a Porsche from that generation, because you can't tell if an engine without IMS upgrade has caused damage already. Or can you?
@Euphorica

Do a good pre-purchase inspection and replace the IMS and RMS if you have no records. Problem solved, it's not an issue then. If someone is looking to purchase a 996 and does not have the means to get this done, they need not be looking to purchase this car.
@TheChannel1978
9 жыл бұрын
A PPI won't involve inspecting the IMS as that is an engine out job. So you could end up with a car that has already had engine damage sustained. Or is there a way to tell even in its early stages? A Porsche shop advised me that you sometimes can tell from the oil (material) but if somebody is dishonest and does and oil change before the sale there's no way to diagnose this. If you know otherwise please share.

I was never really into Porsches, but I needed a winter car while I rebuilt my Subaru and I'll be honest, it was kind of a disappointment to drive. With its reputation of being a 911 (996.1 C4), I was expecting something better than all my other cars in every way, but that's not the reality of it. I have an MR2 (MK2 NA), FC RX-7 and Legacy GT wagon B5. In terms of acceleration and speed, I'd say it's slightly better than the LGT, but not by much (this could be in issue somewhere in the car, I'm not 100% sure yet), in handling it felt a lot heavier than I was expecting and didn't corner nearly as well as the MR2, maybe on par with the RX-7, braking honestly felt the worst of the 4 to me, not sure why, but it never stopped in what distance I expected it to. The interior was decent, but nothing special. It's expected because of the age difference, but the LGT interior is much nicer. The one thing I will say was nice about the 996 was that it's very smooth going into 5th. In the other cars it was always a chore to shift right and up, but in the 996, it goes right in. In terms of value, It's very similar to the STI in price, power and having AWD, so I'd say it's worth it, but keep in mind for like half the price, you could have a car nearly as good. It's really not a car I'd recommend to someone besides as an investment though. In terms of a performance car, I'd say the MR2 Turbo is a much better buy or for daily use, a Legacy GT

Wow! 155K miles and still looks nice. And it made it to 155k on the original, single row IMS? I just picked up a very nice black 1999 996 C2 for $11,000 in Illinois from a private owner with 102K miles. No leaks and likely still has the original dual row IMS. I plan to change out the IMS and RMS over winter just for peace of mind. I'll do it myself however I've received quotes from 2 respectable specialty shops for $2,000 parts & labor for the ceramic IMS and RMS seal which is certainly tempting vs doing myself. As far as not being that fast, low 5's 0-60 for a non-turbo 3.4L 911 works for me. As a current mark I 928 owner, I researched the snot out of this car before buying one and knew the issues beforehand. One thing that has been pointed out with this model is to stay away from low mileage garage queens. These 996's are an excellent choice as long as you know what your getting into.

I've heard it said a lot that, if the car made it to high miles without an IMS failure, it's unlikely to have one. I was looking at a 150k mile Boxster and the locak Porsche mechanic gave me a big list of non-IMS things to be more worried about. Of course as soon as I drove it, the thing turned out to be a fantastic motor in a basketcase chassis. Go figure.

A couple of years ago, one of my dad's friends divorced his wife of 30+ years, bought a new Boxster, and started dating a girl 15 years younger than him. A few weeks after his friend got his Boxster, my dad bought a 996 with 35k miles for 19K. I think he spent another 3K on the IMS retrofit, clutch and brakes. His friend came over with his girlfriend to check it out. The first thing the girl said when she got out of the car and saw my dad's 911 was "he has a real Porsche." He no longer has the girl, but he is still making payments on the Boxster.

I love that people hate them like they do, AND now we have the IMA going at it as well. All in all, most people still forget this is a Porsche. I am all for the plummeting value, because it'll allow more people like this kid to experience a car they generally would not afford. (Which is according to numbers actually the other way round the Apple store is generating more money than google play store) Yes the first words on Google say that the 997 was the most commercially successful but this is because of intelligent selling and rising prices of a 911 www.total911.com/the-six-most-popular-porsche-911s-of-all-time/ shows it roughly as well I only said that the 996 is the most sold generation of 911 and this many cars means more cars than people wanting to own one adding up to the 996 not being an young/old timer yet, as well.

Matt's a great guy and has experienced more cars than most of us will in our entire life time. Yet 3 years later it's interesting to revisit this One take and hear Matt's comments about the 996 when Matt was just starting One Takes and also just being introduced to many different generations of Porsche's. Matt mentions that it's not that fast, but the 996 3.4 liter has always been a screamer with power coming on strong above 5000 rpm and pulls hard to 7000 rpm. I don't think Matt really gave the 996 a fair shake and proper drive on these tight and twisting roads where he never really got to ring it out and feel the power. I can tell he spent most of his time between 3000-5000 rpm. The 996 3.4 is a momentum car for sure. Also what is very interesting is that 3 years and 600 one takes later and many Porsche 911's driven under Matt's belt, Matt decided to chose a much slower, not as well handling, and inferior braking Porsche 911 to buy for his own personal collection. Goes to show you that Matt saw the light about what makes Porsche's special. It's not necessarily the straight line speed, but how the car makes you feel submersed in the driving experience and connected to the road like no other car no matter the speed. You can enjoy these cars going slow or fast. Nice to see Matt warm up to Porsche after all these one takes. There really is no substitute. ;^)

Would you please review a 914-6? I am thinking it will out handle nearly anything on the road today.

Love it. I wanna make a move on a 996 sometime soon-ish. One gripe I have is the paint is swirled to crap!

Matt, your 944 comment is definitely off the mark. You can find a nice 951 or S2 for 10 grand.

I'm sure you did. Plenty can be had for those prices. My 10k comment was referring to well sorted S2s and Turbos.

sgfreak96 I know. I've been looking for one but I'm finding ones for $20-$25k and they all have over 100k on them. I test drove one and it was very well maintained but I'm having a bit of a hard time justifying over $20k for one. In addition to that I'm sure there will have to be some suspension components here and there that need tending to among other things. Gonna have to keep looking.

These things are twenty grand now routinely. I see a lot of them on the market with over 100k mi. If I can find a 2002+ 996 Carrera 4 under 50k mi and on the sweet side of $20k, I'm very tempted to pick one up to replace my DD 2011 Miata.

Hi, I am getting my 997 S project back this week. I built it from scratch and would love for you to drive it through the canyon. When is the next time people can meet you in the canyon? Oh my car has 249000 miles on the odometer!

When are you coming to NJ? I'm putting a smaller turbo to replace my current turbo on my Subaru and i feel like you should drive it. It should make 450 ish when all is said and done. Built motor, built heads, brembos, suspension work and more.

TheSmokingTire The 996 isn't the greatest 911, but it's still a 911, not some 924/944. For $10k it's a steal! If the M96 engine grenades on you, you can swap in a LSX engine (NOT RENEGADE) and the car will be the perfect 911. Cheap, powerful & easy to maintain. Yeah, it's not a Porsche engine, but it's smaller & lighter while making more power. The ONLY real gripe I have about the car, is the front bumper needs to be swapped to a 997's then it'll be even better.
