" This guy's getting away with murder, he's so on the edge " ~ David Bailey " He's just given himself over to the bike, he's either going to crash or he's going to win " ~ Davey Coombs I think a lot of people see this time as McGrath's end. But it wasn't. Everyone has to pass on, and it's cool, and much more cool now the way that he did pass on. Still the King of Supercross, taking down by the GOAT. That's damn good company.

20 years later and still get the chills from these. To make up that much time with the best riders in front of you…how did he do it? Talent and serious fitness. MAC didn’t have the fitness.

Crf 271 Answer me this. If the tracks are so easy for everybody to go fast, as Jeremy stated, how is it possible for him to be caught and passed on a ONE line track by somebody that started eight spots behind you after the first turn? How does Ricky pass anybody for that matter? I like McGrath, but I can’t stand excuses.

Manufactured in china? Have no idea what you mean. Lots of true talent has thrown legs over dirt bikes. The talent is different today with 4-strokes on faster tracks (that are all similar), but I say it took more talent to ride a 2-stroke well. Now I know the secrete of why Mac won so much. He was buying the beer at the river, and drinking water. :)

Southern California dirt just sucks. Its hardpacked, blue grooved and slick at just about every track indoors or out. I left there in '04, and when I see Glen Helen now, it looks like a lot of sand was brought in.
@EarthSurferUSA

Sand (softer dirt) was brought in on all the national tracks over the last couple decades. Red Bud used to be brutal clay, like the rest of the ground and parking lot. I think the FIM dictated it with some kind of force, because I know a bit about statistics and to have 12 different track owners from across the country create tracks with very similar ground by their own designs, is pretty much impossible with out FIM force. It would be much more probable to flip a quarter 12 times and get 12 tails in a row.
@EarthSurferUSA

Each national having it's own dirt type based on the land the track was made on was really special, and it also separated the talent. The FIM has hindered USA racing ever since we started winning the MXofN in 81. And now they run our racing, dictating how the tracks are made, and are made to keep everybody more equal (SX more so than MX. But they do the best they can).
@JokersWild70

@EarthSurferUSA You're right, because East Coast guys had trouble on the Glen Helen freeway of a track, lol, and the national was when it was at its best! All of the SoCal tracks, GH, Elsinore, Starwest, and the old Comp Park in San Jacinto were really the same hard packed concrete. The only track that was somewhat loamy was Perris Raceway. The first time I ever rode a 4 stroke as an adult was my buddy's new YZ426F at Elsinore, and I couldn't believe how much better it gripped the corners than my YZ250 2 stroke. It took way less energy to corner that thing, but way MORE energy to start it when I stalled it out, lol. But with the tracks, you get good at what you're used to riding all the time. I could do well at GH as an amateur because A: I rode there so much, and B: I was used to the hardpack dirt that we had in SoCal and the concrete start. Dowd and Henry used to really do well at Southwick's sand (and other places too) because they rode there so much, and knew which gear to be in different parts of the track, what tires to use, where the faster lines would develop, etc. They had a slight advantage over everyone else, although they were both phenomenal riders, and both really nice guys
