Where does the b + wire connect to from the alternator
@DrShock

The large cable held by the nut shown in the video should be going a fusible link, which in turn goes to the starter solenoid.

Btw you have the best videos for this stuff. I did a whole timing chain and water pump, and I can honestly say that without your videos, it would have never happened.

Many thanks. I was going to get this repaired by a mechanic. But I've repaired most on my sunfire. This is a great help. Thank you again.

What was the name of the part that you broke and where can I buy one? Mine also broke and I checked my local junk yard and they didn't have it and I can't find it online.
@DrShock

I believe you are referring to the nipple that the PCV hose attaches to on the air intake resonator. This is the black plastic _box_ where air ducted in from the air cleaner assembly is ultimately routed into the engines throttle body. It's a common point of failure after two or more decades of plastic aging now on these models. But you can find resonators in salvage yards still intact in southern and western states (away from the salt belt states).

So that plastic connector to the airbox always breaks.You can buy threaded fittings.Drill out the hole and put a metal fitting.it will last forever

extremely complicated for such a basic car.....on the earlier sunfires the Alternator sits up nice and high and is much easier to swap out.

Hey. Great Video. I currently own a 2005 Chevy Cavalier and in need to replace my alternator. Original one has been in the car the entire duration. I was wondering if you or someone who my read this please give me the exact tools I will need to try my best and replace the alternator myself. Thanks 😊

I believe I mentioned this, but you want to have a cooled off engine when doing that so that there is no coolant pressure (or anything too hot to work on in this area). Some leakage of coolant is normal and unavoidable, but there should be no pressure when cold.

can this cause the abs light to come on as well as the battery and check engine light
@DrShock
3 жыл бұрын
Only the battery lamp will be affected by a failing alternator. If you let it go until the battery dies, you might get other lamps due to the low voltage situation. But if you're car is running, and you have ABS and check engine on then no. It's time to connect an OBDII code reader and see what the diagnostic codes are. If you don't have one, swing by your local auto parts store. Most are happy to read off the codes for you.

Were there any particular reasons to buy this brand of the alternator? There are cheaper ones, like for $99, and this one $170 (Amazon). Thank you for a good explanatory film.
@DrShock
4 жыл бұрын
Well couple of reasons. First, the OEM ACDelco brand alternator lasted 16 years. This repair is alot of work, I don't want to do it again in the life of the vehicle so that is important to me. Second, the GM part _exactly_ matches the original specifications (no more, no less). So I have confidence I won't be looking at any incompatibilities. I aim to save the money by doing the work myself, and then just aim for the lowest price I can find while sticking with original GM parts.

@@DrShock Thank you for your replay. I also try to buy best parts, but if to do search on Amazon the part "New Alternator Replacement For Chevy Chevrolet Cavalier Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L 2.2 (2002-2005) Saturn Ion Vue (2002-2007) Chevy Classic, Malibu 04 05, Oldsmobile Alero 02-04" comes first in the list, and it is said "brand new" ($99). "ACDelco 334-1468A Professional Alternator, Remanufactured" is also there ($165), but you see how it says "remanufactured". I'm thinking maybe just different companies, and that is why difference in price. The alternator on our car is working, but car is 100K, so I think it is better to update some stuff there. Thank you again.

Please help where does the fusible link go connected to my battery is not charging after replaced with a new alternator the fusible link passes a continuity test my only other concern is the connector will that be my issue.
@DrShock
3 жыл бұрын
There's only two connections on this model ACDelco alternator shown starting at 15:51 - one is the battery cable and the other is the sense harness. The battery cable is the one with ring connector that you attach to the stud and secure with a nut, the other is simply a plug in style. The battery cable is the one with an inline fusible link. You can measure the output of the alternator on the battery cable to confirm it is working.

Where does the other end of that gold nut battery post cable go to it seems that I have two ends loose and don’t know where the other one reattaches....
@hh1h_334

Is it a ground?
@DrShock
3 жыл бұрын
The primary post cable with the ring connector goes to the battery eventually, it's part of the factory charging wiring harness and should not be "loose" at the other end. If you google for a Cavalier charging diagram for the years this video covers you will see this cable should have an inline fusible link and then connects the alternator to the starter solenoid, which in turn is then connected to the battery positive terminal for charging at the same point.
@DrShock

No, the alternator is grounded to the chassis by the bolts that attach it to the engine.

@@DrShock I see! Thank you for a quick response. I seem to have 2 ring connections, and I may have not connected the old connection to my new starter during the swap. After the vehicle died 10 minutes from home after that swap, I believed my alternator was out, but it may be that my old one simply wasnt connected!

Did you have to bleed the antifreeze/coolant after?
@DrShock

Nah, it will bleed on its own. But you do have to top off what you lost thru the clear plastic coolant reservoir container.
