Mark, just wanted to let you know this video saved the day for me. I found myself stranded at a gas pump in Duluth, MN where NOBODY speaks Jaguar, on a Saturday no less. I was looking forward to renting a car & having to haul my ass back up to Duluth to recover the damn thing after it got fixed. Your clear instructions (the picture isn't as clear, what needs to be done is manually actuating the shift lock solenoid) got the car started & I drove it home to Minneapolis without incident. Source cause is different from yours, in my case, the shifter was stuck in park, but the indicator showed reverse. I shifted it down to neutral, where it started right up, shifted it to drive & drove straight home. Full pot of coffee in me, that wasn't easy, lol. In my case the root problem is different (bracket for the shift cable lost a bolt, with a side of brake pedal microswitch coming out of adjustment). At any rate, you turned my disaster into a mere nuisance. Thanks!

Mark, thank you so very very much for posting this video. A bolt came out of the bracket where the linkage cable attaches to the transmission. Would not go into gear or start. Thanks to you I was able to get it in gear from the middle of the road and into the driveway to repair. You are da man. Great job, thanks again.

My 2000 S-Type used to do that too. The S-type was really nice when it came out. But it turned out to be a piece of shit as i held on to it. Every other day there was a different issue. I told myself i'd never buy another Jaguar again.

Hmmm, starting to feel that way myself 😒 2007 S type Jaguar Sport 2.7 V6 Diesel Problems are mounting……. 1. Coolant leak 2. No heat in the cabin. 3. Smokey fumes, from engine bay, 4. ABS fault light recently came on 5. Gearbox fault 3 days later, & now stuck in third gear, 😒 5.5 Now won’t come out of park. Video, excellent, got it home, hooray! Game over, Jaguar will cost too much to repair, though was one of the nicest cars I have ever driven, prior to the above mentioned problems. 123,235 miles on the clock ⏰

Yes this works but.. It also releases the handbrake at least on my UK 2003 S Type. As a result it tore my Front offside door off. Worth bearing this in mind.

Graeme Johnson Sorry to hear about your UK 2003 S type having the brake release. It stayed on with my US version. My car was parked on an uphill slope and didn’t have that issue. The wiring for the parking brake may need some attention in your UK S type.

Chris, no there were no lights on the dash. However the computer control boxes"PCU" for those lights receive data from the main PCU, Transmission PCU, ABS PCU, and wheel sensors. Question: Has the battery been changed or slow starting? If so the PCU's may need to be reset by a technician with a Jaguar control console/ tablet. You can usually find a European auto repair shop that can reprogram the PCU's for a fee.

first tried with a butter knife..didnt work..than used a chop stick..great success..gear box fault and restricted performance went away..hopefully this result is here to stay.

My shifter is loose when it’s not on the white plastic piece when I put back on plastic piece I can’t move the shifter do I have to leave it on white piece then pull the lever please respond I know it’s along time ahead

ABS & TSC are part of the breaking and traction systems. These are two separate systems. The TSC button is on the dash below the radio unit. That switch controls turning it on & off. If the TCS is blinkinG, there is a problem with that system. It maybe a short in the ground or relay. CAUTION: The ABS system is vital to your car. If the sequencer is having issues and fails, the brakes could fail. Get it towed in for service.

Hi Mark...link was useful Question: I have a 2000 similar in specs overall, my problem is the shifter moves but doesn't get into gear and seems like the car is in neutral instead of D or R in other words the stick will shift and is not stuck on P but the car itself will not move...I did some research and i think it may be the solenoid sensor connected to the gear shift box... what do you think ?

Abraham Olivas That sounds like the cable from the shifter is either damaged or needs adjustment. Check the cable linkage where it attaches to the shifter first. The other end requires the car to be on a lift to check.

The fault can be triggered by a signal from one of the electronic components that monitor torque, pressure, temperature, and control panel in front of the gear selector. There are a few things inside the transmission that can trigger the lights. (1) The torque converter may be getting to worn down to maintain torque load to the transmission. (2) Not enough transmission fluid either in the transmission itself or getting to where it needs inside the transmission. (3) Torque converter solenoid may be not maintaining proper operation. In all three situations one thing is common. The transmission is not putting out enough torque or the sensors measuring torque are having issues. The sensors can be tested and verified status. If they test good, then it is most likely internal transmission (electronic or Hydraulic). A trained European auto mechanic or Jaguar Mechanic can check it out. It is worth the check out fee to help you make the best decision.

These are for manual gear selections. It can give you an option to go into second gear and drive. This can be useful if First gear fails to work. This method is for getting it to a shop. However, some people prefer to control the shifting and run the RPM's higher. Usually this is for someone trying to get to higher speeds faster such as racing.

Roderick Hertog The car was stuck in Park and the flashing Red P for park means there is something unsafe such as it thought it was already out of Park. There is a circular plate with two metal sensors on the bottom of it. As you move the gear selector it rotates the plate and moves the sensors to a different position. If the sensors don’t see the proper location for where the gear is selected. It stops everything so that the car doesn’t roll away if on a hill. On my car one of the sensors was corroded due to something like coffee being spilled on it.

i have 2000 model its in park and there is no lever or are the models not of same gearshift because i have removed the gearshift entirely, the car has been where its stock for 3days.so frustrated with this. how do i get out of this?

steve onuora The 2000-2002 are different from the 2003. In 2003 Ford / Lincoln had some Inputs for the S-Type in 2003 and a few years after. Which is why several parts in the 2003 S-Type are the same as those on some Lincoln cars.

How do i clean the S (sport) buton ? the S buton just right next to the Gear, i've dropped coca-cola on the S buton and is so sticky that when i press it down it can barely come up again

Use a mild cleaner and a rag. Only spray it on the rag and wipe the button and area near it. If any liquid got inside it can damage the circuit board inside the shifter. Use caution

Yes, it is a mechanical lock that is electrically controlled. Moving the mechanical lever open allows the selector to be moved with or without power. However the actuation inside the transmission may require the car to be on.

If moving the brake safety lever did not allow it to move, then the cable is misaligned. The cable is attached to the plastic housing of the gear shifter and goes through the floor board to the transmission. If either end is damaged or the cable inside is binding, then it won't go out of park or into gear. This may require adjustment or replacement of the cable

Glad that your issue was able to be reset. If it happens again, there maybe a dirty or loose contact in the wires going to the gear shift.
