As a A4 b8 owner I often read comments about audi's and maintenance issues/cost! In Germany, just the cost of a driver's license is more expensive than in the U.S. also when buying a higher end german car some additional maintenance may be required! Most Americans don't want to do anything maintenance-wise. In that case, get a japanese vehicle! If you want the speed and luxury of a german "bahn-burner" some extra maintenance comes along with that pkg!

To anyone looking for a C5 A6 Avoid: 2.5TDI Automatic transmissions, especially on pre facelift models with the 2.7T and 4.2 Allroads FWD Look for: 1.8T, 2.4, 2.8, 4.2/S6 Manual quattro(obviously) Avant Well optioned models with leather and DIS Cambelt and DMF replaced recently, those two are the most expensive things.

I´ve notice that from time to time, the dashboard buttons and plastics from European cars start to peel terribly, and even the LCD displays lost some of the graphics, so that´s not a good sign on quality, even cheaper cars don´t.

I've been driving a C5 A6 like this for long time now. She'll be gone soon, but man am I gonna miss that thing. Mine is a '00 with the 2.8L, the predecessor to the 3.0, but is otherwise the same. She's been a smooth, refined, reliable commuter for a while now, but I just want something with a bit more character. Although speaking of character, that 3.0 has a far more aggressive exhaust note than the 2.8 did, yet the 2.8 is far more rev-happy. A shame I never got to mess around with one of the later 3.0s, but the 2.8 is absolutely bullet proof. Mind you, it's the 2.8L V6, not the 2.8L VR6 as seen in some of Volkswagen's other vehicles.

I believe that they are, though an A6 will take a bigger budget than an A4. The A6 of this era tends to show up on eBay or AutoTrader with descriptions involving replacement transmissions if they have around 140k miles on them, which tells me either the transmissions aren't terribly durable in this heavier car and/or the owners are not servicing them. If you can find one that has had proper gearbox servicing and a full timing belt service (with water pump and tensioner), it could be a great buy!
@enoch861

None of them. Unless your cool with paying for expensive repairs. My A6 is killing me right now with repairs. But if your cool with repairs, I'd say get an A6. And if you live in cold weather, make sure you find one with the Cold Weather package, you'll be happy you have it. I'd also recommend you get a pre 1999 or 2000 (I think) model year because they have better quality on the plastics. Where they don't wash out like that one did.

Now in my experience, American cars are plenty reliable. Of course, I take care of them. I don't believe they have the kind of abuse proof nature of, say, a Toyota. However I have a '99 Dodge truck in my driveway that just ticked over 265,000 miles and it's just had it's first major problem this week (head gasket).

I'm just not to sure about the Audi A6. It's just a larger version of the Audi A4. It rides real rough like an A4, and while driving, it throws you all over the road, and you feel every bump like an A4. It doesn't make it a bad car but in my opinion out of all the Audi models the A8 is the best when it comes to comfort and luxury. It separates itself from the rest of the group.

but it has a auto dimming rear mirror so you don't need a sunshade for the rear mirror. And even if you haven't ordered a package containing the auto dimming rear mirror, you would still have the manually dimming rear view mirror. I haven't seen a car in the past 10y that hasn't had at least a manual dimming mirror.
