The Red Sox become the first MLB team to come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a best-of-seven series and third team in professional sports to do it (1942 Maple Leafs and 1975 Islanders). Also, their first-ever playoff series win over the Yankees.

It always surprises me that this 2004 ALCS is the only time in MLB history that a team has made an 0-3 comeback in the postseason, considering the nature of the game. (As of the end of the 2023 season). 4-game-sweeps are difficult to achieve, but are they are common when teams face each other in a four-game-series during the season. . Not only that, but I was also surprised that the 2004 RSOX are the only team in MLB history to at least tie a best-of-seven series after being down 0-3. 1999 Mets came very close and were 3 outs away from doing that first. NOTE = IM NOT COUNTING THE 2020 ASTROS AGAINST THE RAYS IN THE ALCS AS A TEAM TO TIE A BEST OF 7 SERIES AFTER BEING DOWN 0-3, AND I WILL NEVER COUNT THIS AS LEGITIMATE!!!!!!

Yes. The Yankees won 61 games coming from behind in 2004. 10 times when trailing by 4 runs (11 if you include ALDS Game 4 in MIN). In a season of comebacks (Dodgers' 53 wins, Astros' 36-10 finish), this is THE ultimate. And one we will NEVER see the likes of as long as we're on the face of this earth. And on a sidenote. The 2004 playoffs was the first year I attempted to tape all the playoff games. I was in my 2nd semester at SJSU and I knew I was going to miss some games live with classes. So I taped the LDS games, and then the LCSs in a potential anticipation of a Sox title. It was not good after Saturday night, obviously, after the 19-8 shellacking. But these next 4 games the Sox had to win cemented my passion for the game. I have collected every MLB playoff game and World Series highlight films in the coming years since then. What a difference three years makes, doesn't it?

@@cdelano81 Youre right = no matter how many NHL teams have done it, or if an NBA team ever does it, or if an MLB team ever does it again, when you think of 0-3 comebacks, you will always think of the 2004 RSOX coming back against the Yankees to put an end to 86 years of heartbreaks, and then the RSOX winning the WS to break their drought-curse. My Mets in 1999 should have done it against the Braves; it should have been them.

And with Boston beating the Yankees in dramatic historic fashion, their historic rivalry is ALMOST over. If Boston can win the WS in 2004, then the Yankees-RSOX rivalry would be officially over (the rivalry as we know it).

REVERSE SWEEP! And with this stunning result, the final ALCS at the old Yankee Stadium, as the Yanks wouldn't see the LCS until they move to their new house. It's a massive loss for NYY, ending their era of dominance with a resounding thud. Boston's off to the World Series. But the question is, who's coming with em? (Also a moment of tragedy after game 7 as a college student, Victoria Snelgrove, was killed in a riot after being struck accidentally with a rubber bullet by the police. This would slightly temper the celebration for a few days en route to WS Game 1)

With the Yankees getting eliminated this 2004 postseason, this is pretty much the end of the Yankees postseason dynasty as we know it, 1995-2004 (The Division Series dynasty). What made this 10-year-period of 1995-2004 so memorable (asides from AL Pennants and WS titles) for the Yankees was how many clutch postseason home runs they got. Its the beginning of a new era for the Yankees in the postseason from 2005-2008, and not all positives moments nor clutch moments..

As someone who was too young to witness that dynasty, it was difficult to watch them fall short every October afterwwards. But I also learned how difficult it was to get there in the first place, even with the wild card. I learned to appreciate then and there that the season is more important than the October baseball. Red Sox vs. Yankees - Part II - Reverse the Curse - Round 25 (ALCS Game 6--The bloody sock) If the Red Sox were going to become the first team to force a Game 7 after a 3-0 deficit, they would now need a medical miracle as Curt Schilling's ankle was in shambles before Game 6. The solution? Sew the loose tendons directly to the bone and achieve temporary stability. In short, suture down the skin and making sure the tendon didn't pop back in or out. Dr. Bill Morgan, who did this procedure before only on a human cadaver, performed the operation, and Schilling would pitch Game 6. With blood seeping through the ankle, Schilling kept the Yankees' offense quiet over 7 innings and allowing just one run. Meanwhile, the Red Sox jumped on Jon Lieber for four runs in the 4th, capped by Mark Bellhorn's three-run blast. After escaping the bottom of the 8th with just one run allowed, Keith Foulke faced a two-on two out situation in the 9th. Foulke fanned Tony Clark to seal the 4-2 win. After 6 rounds on the scorecards, it was tied at 3 games each. Incredibly, the Sox would force a Game 7. Red Sox vs. Yankees - Part II - Reverse the Curse - Round 26 (ALCS Game 7--WE DID IT!!) As Game 7 approached, the Red Sox had all the momentum. Following three tension filled must-win games of 4, 5 and 6, Game 7 will end just as soon as it began. Fortunate for those who had no nails left to bite. Kevin Brown started for the Yankees in Game 7, and he had nothing in the tank. David Ortiz hit a two-run shot in the first. One inning later, Johnny Damon--3 for 26 in the ALCS--broke loose with the sacks full and belted a grand slam. Damon will hit another blast in the 4th. With just 2 days' rest, Derek Lowe pitched the game of his life, allowing only one run and one hit over 6 innings. The Red Sox won easily, 10-3, and the comeback of epic proportions was complete. Hell Froze over. Pigs have flown. Boston became the first team ever to win a playoff series after being down 3 games to 0. At 12:01am ET on October 21, 2004, every Red Sox fan will remember where they were when the final out was recorded. Imagine. Trailing three games to none, facing 86 years of futility, and having to win four straight elimination games against your most hated rivals. The Sox had pulled off the miraculous odds to do it. We will never see anything like this as long as we're living. While Sox fans enjoyed this there biggest win in club history and winning their first pennant since 1986, there is still THE World Series to be played. And the Cardinals or Astros will have something to say about the Red Sox' destiny. But after overcoming the Yankees, who will doubt the Sox. Question is: who will try to stand in Boston's way in the Fall Classic.

We are never gonna see anything like this again, in how two teams, for two consecutive seasons, Division Rivals, hating each other, chasing each other down in the regular season in the same division, and then going neck-to-neck with each other in the LCS twice. We almost had something similar with the Braves-Mets in 1999-2000, but the Braves lost in the Division Series in 2000. And we had back-to-back LCS between Astros-Cardinals in 2004-2005, but they were never regular-season-rivals or never had that "hatred", and the Cardinals were elite both seasons and the Astros struggled all season both seasons until the final 2 months.

Offseason moves that the Yankees will make after this 2004 season with players currently on their roster : - This was Javy Vasquez only season with the Yankees, as he will get traded to Arizona in the offseason for Randy Johnson. Well, Javy Vasquez will be back later in his career with the Yankees again. - This was Esteban Loaiza only season with the Yankees, as he will play for the Washington Nationals next season. - This was Jon Lieber only season with the Yankees, as he will play with the Phillies next season. - This was Kenny Lofton only season with the Yankees, as he will get traded to the Phillies in the offseason. - This was the end of Orlando Hernandez (El Duque) second stint with the Yankees, as he will sign with the WSOX in the offseason. - This was Tony Clark only season with the Yankees, as he will sign with Arizona in the offseason. - Yankees will sign free agents starting pitchers Carl Pavano and Jaret Wright in the offseason..

Yankee fan here. Man looking back at that 04 season, it hurts obviously lol. I was 16 that season. Even during the season, I knew the weaknesses the Yanks had. It basically came down to the pitching. Our starting pitching got worse. We lost Clemens, Pettitte, and Wells. We had no bullpen except mariano. Tom Gordon had a pretty good year setting up Mariano, but he became less effective towards the end of the season. Paul Quantrill was overused. Tanyon Sturtze had some pretty good long relief appearances during the season, but other than that, nothing else. And no legit lefties, starters or bullpen, at all. Basically it all relied on the offense. And even though the weaknesses were there, they were the New York freaking Yankees. I thought somehow they can get it done. They had a bomb squad offensively. And I loved how they were considered the big bad evil empire and everyone hated them and their fans after getting arod and sheffield and all that lol and I loved seeing Red Sox nation suffer. But that year, I also knew that the Red Sox got significantly better. They got another Cy Young winner in Curt Schilling to go along with their already impressive rotation, and they acquired a legit closer in Keith foulke. Plus, they already had a loaded offense. And then their mid season acquisitions improved them even more as well. And during the season, the Red Sox have a better record against us. But somehow we won the division. And Pedro Martinez called the yanks his daddy. Yes, Arch nemesis pedro gave in and submitted. I surely thought that if we played the Red Sox again in the ALCS, it would be back-and-forth like in 03, but the Red Sox may have enough this time to come out on top. Then, when we went up 3-0 it felt like it was too good to be true. Like Was this really happening? We’re about to sweep them after the back n forth in 03. We were actually going to get away on top without having any pitching? And then reality hit and indeed it was too good to be true lol. That’s how you break a curse. You can’t write it up any better than that.
