I use the original Permatex thats been around for longer than 40+ years. It comes in a metal can and the screw-on top has a brush attached. It's as thick as molasses and reminds me of tar. It will ruin your clothes and is difficult to wash off of hands and can be messy to use if one is not careful - a little goes a long ways. My Auto Mechanics instructor in High School introduced us to this version of Permatex, and he instructed us not to use anything else while we were in his class. It does not harden but stays flexible. I use this product on water pumps, valve cover and head gaskets, etc..I apply a thin layer to the part being installed to hold the gasket in place. I also use it on the outside of cam and crank seals. I;ve never had any leaks whatsoever when using this version of Permatex, and the fact that they continue to make the stuff to this day says much about the quality of the product and the desired outcome of having zero leaks. A small container will last for years, and does not harden if the cap is screwed on tight, unlike the silicon RTV formulas.

Yes I know the product and I seriously forgot about it! I USED to see it all the time in dealerships when working in the shops, AND used it quite often in the 70's and 80's! IMO, That was the best product made by Permatex. Thanks for your comment, Tom in NV

Good video. Thanks for posting it. Those pieces that were in the plastic bag are called grommets.

What were the little plugs in the bag that came with the gasket for?

They were actually for the bolts that held down the valve cover.
