To anyone who is looking to by a Celica of this generation, I would have to say I agree with the majority of what he said in the video. This is a good car if you're in University or what not and need something fun to drive that won't burn your wallet. I get 35mpg mixed and insurgence is very little on this car for new drivers. I would recommend the 5 speed GT because they are more common then the 6 speed GTS. Also, I found that second hand GT's are in better condition more so than second hand GTS. Also the difference between the GT and GTS is the GT is built for economy and requires non-premium fuel; now the GTS is built for performance and has "LIFT" which is a system that is very similar to Honda i-VTEC system where the aggressive cams kick in at 6000rpm (the GTS also REQUIRES premium fuel). Lastly, Parts are also cheap and readily available. Hope this helps anyone in the market for a Celica!

Also forgot to mention a few cons that weren't in the video-- First, I hear they're are oil consumption issues with 2000-2002 Celica. The more reliable models are from 2003+ (they also refreshed the tail lights in 2003 if your into cosmetics). Lastly, the only downfall I faced when owning this car is the hate Celica's get from other car communities. It is worse if you own a Celica with the TRD action package or the Tsunami package. Other car communities will often hate because the Celica cannot compete with the majority of other cars. However, (from my experience) you will get lots of love from your local community because most are not judgmental on how fast your car is.

Thank you for this comment. Many people talk badly about the celica. The reasons for owning one are not to drive around and pretend to be fast, but rather enjoy what you are driving while driving a car from a dependable company and getting great gas mileage. This car should be seen as the most fun you can have while saving money.

I do have a lot of respect for the FR-S, I think its a good car, and brings back some of that old spark that Toyota is missing. I am not crazy about boxer engines but they do give the cars a very low center of gravity. I love owning a Celica though, FR-S owners and TC owners are always looking and asking about it. The Scion TC is also a good car, but put a 2005 TC beside a 2005 Celica and people will think that the Celica is better looking. The cars look great even by today's standards. My goal one day is to have a supra too, so I can drive around and show people what Toyota use to be. But maybe Toyota is coming back, the FT1 looks fantastic and Lexus is making some awesome cars.

I think this model is overlooked and is one of the forgotten performance bargains of all time. It's small, lightweight, loud, stiff, hot hatch that's cheap on gas and cheap to maintain. Why isn't the Celica a cult legend? Decent used examples are going for 1/8 the price of a new FR-S. Can't really get much better than that.
@HakeemKazak
10 жыл бұрын
I had the last gen Celica and I currently drive a FR-S, they are on totally different realms so I wouldn't compare it like that, but yes, the Celica was a great bargain for any of its gens. The reason why the last gen struggled to gain popularity is because as he mentioned it still looks really aggressive has a pretty typical Japanese type design which is sadly polarizing for many, wasn't fast enough and was too small for American standards, and a lot of them got "riced up" hard which gave a bad rep to the Celica name, people always joke about apparently how "bad" the Celica was when in all reality it was and still is a perfectly good FWD hatch.

One addition: the reason for the window controls being in the center console strip was for budget reasons. As you can see, the interior is very, very symmetrical, and this allowed Toyota to easily produce RHD and LHD models with ease. The only unique control on the driver's side door, i think, is for rear-view mirrors. And, just because I love talking about Celicas, I have a 2000 GTS (US), no action package -- although i'm unsure if that was available for the first run 7th gen. The positronic sport shift buttons on the steering wheel, as mine is an automatic, do have somewhat annoying placement. I wish they had just integrated it into the shifter, like the later Honda Prelude among others had. If you're turning at a light, for example, you have to turn the steering wheel and accelerate while trying to keep your finger on the back to hit "up" to shift to 2nd, which is a bit of a pain. the rest of the "eccentric" interior, you might say, was something i got used to _immediately_, but i am utterly in love with this car, and the entire Celica run, especially the 6th gen hatchbacks. The classic (read: old/outdated) Toyota mainstays, including that damn green digital clock, just made me fall in love even more. I wouldn't trade it for anything (well... maybe an FT-86...). Finally, thanks a lot for this review, as it was very insightful and informative, and you clearly know your Celica history. Also, due to this video, I now realize what those little hooks are for in the trunk! I need to buy a cargo net on eBay. I was using them to hang grocery bags and misc. fragile items on, and honestly thought that's what they were for.

People's opinions on looks are subjective, But I love this car. I love how it looks, I love how it sounds, Completely different than what the other sport compacts we're doing back in the day. This car was a lot like Honda's RSX Type S/S2000 and Civic Si with the high top end power. But even though it only made 180hp it was really lightweight only 2500-2600lbs, In comparison my car is petty heavy around 2900. Also the TRD Action Package body kit was so striking/shocking to all the other sport compacts at the time. I mean Chevrolet only gave my car a huge wing but the Celica GTS is on a whole nother level. I love my Cobalt SS But I have to give Toyota credit this is one of their greatest cars ever made. The FRS/86 Is a return to form with the new Supra on the way, But I wish they gave us a next celica the TC replacement was an embarrassing feat.

One thing I REALLY hate about the Celica's is the cup holders. I don't ever really put any drinks in the cup holders. For one the center armrest cup holders are placed in a horrible position. When a cup is placed in them it is really hard and awkward to shift. 2 the backseat cup holders can barely fit any cups you put in them because the hard plastic hangs over them.

I have an older 1993 celica but a lot of the points made here are fairly similar and yes, definitely fun and fairly easy (manual) to drive around for short distance trips - however I use it for work as I'm a delivery driver

The gts is more reliable but very expensive. If you get the gt version it is still a good car but just know the car is more cramped then average cars. Although cornering with the car is very easy cause the car is wide, low and has longer wheel span then average cars.

I just bought a 2000 Celica GT a week ago, first import and sports car I've ever owned. I really like the car, using it as a fun little commuter. But I was wondering how well these cars respond to things like a header and aftermarket exhaust and intakes? I'm new to these little 4 cyls and was just trying to squeeze a bit more efficiency out of the motor to get the best MPG I can, HP is pretty much secondary, I already have a race car, I'm not trying to turn my Celica into one.

Hey bud, nice car. I saw your replies in youtube and had me interested to know more about horsepower and torque. Can you help me understand dyno graphs and torquevshp? I believe power = torque over rpm, what I dont understand is why on a dyno sheet, there is a diff torque curve when hp is already the measurement of torque given an rpm. thanks a lot!
@177SCmaro
9 жыл бұрын
Bryan Bruto That's becasue dynos measure torque and rpm, the two things engines produce, and calculate horsepower. Horsepower is just a specific type of measurement of power. But how is that measurement of power calculated? From force (torque) and speed (rpm). It's also useful, especially to engineers/builders of high performance engines, to able to see the relationship between torque, rpm, and power all at once to gauge and engine's power band, "area under the curve", etc. Think of it as a way for us to mathematically represent a particular engine's "personality" in addition to knowing how powerful it is at any rpm. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I bought an RSX and was looking at a 2003 Celica. It felt small inside and I'm only 5"6 and thin and surprisingly at only about 60,000 kms it was loose panels whereas my daily RSX with 300,000 kms still has tight panel gaps. Also didn't have as my features.

My friend had a 2002. To say the ride is stiff is an understatement. And the seats were great for going around corners, but got uncomfortable after 20 minutes. Her's also had the automatic and was possibly the slowest car I've ever been in. Overall, it wasn't bad though.

In Europe were 3 versions of celica - terra (very rare), luna and sol. In luna we have leather steering wheel and it doesn't look like from corolla, climatronic (without this terrible knobs from american and terra versions). So interior is a little bit better. And propably the most important - in european versions was 6-speed gearbox. Summarizing - in Europe celica was even better car than in US. BTW nice review

This is an awesome car to drive, the leg room is cramped a little. I'm pretty sure all gen 7 Celicas have 6 speeds, & Toyota do still make sporty cars, the Toyota gt86 is almost a follow on from the celica

Where are people getting their 0-60 times? My '01 GT-S Automatic can get 0-60 in about 5 sec without pushing too hard. Sitting at 195k and still no real mods. Toyota cars run like champs if you take care of them. The Celica will be my lifetime car. Fun to drive, easy to mod, turns heads to this day as they get more rare to see on the road... Yeah. I love my Celica.

its not a sports car. its just an average car which has a massive ricer body kit on it, its front wheel drive meaning major understeer and the wing doesnt actually make it faster it makes it slower. it only has 174bhp whereas something like a 2.0l bmw has 184 bhp

The UK-Spec 192BHP as standard Celica GT Anniversary (which I have), T-Sport or 190 is the one to have here in UK. We run on 95 octane minimum, though most higher spec Celica owners would run on 100 RON. We also have a company here called se7en Motorsports who offer a rotrex super charger up to 320 + BHP which just bolts on with the same stock engine internals though you may have to use an Apexi CPU. They also offer turbo conversions too. www.se7enmotorsports.co.uk Go above that and you look at Monkey Wrench Racing (US) for better internals or even Cosworth here in the UK offer upgrades for the 2ZZ-GE (Yamaha developed the 2ZZ-GE with Toyota and Lotus used it in their cars)...Great car.
