The 21mm nut is loosened by removing it with a long extension from the top thru the engine bay, not from below. One side is covered with the back of the airbox, but easy to remove.

I used this video as a reference to do the job. I used meyle HD parts - which come with the bushings pre-mounted on the arms. An excellent video, thank you! Just for future reference for anyone else looking to do the job - you will save yourself a lot of time by using ratchet, a universal socket adapter, and two long extensions to remove the 21mm nut holding the centre ball joint instead of trying to remove it with an open ended spanner.

Rather than use a spanner to loosen the nut in the inner bushing, I’ve used several long extensions and a long reach socket from inside the engine bay. you might need someone on the other end just to mount on the nut, then you can ratchet it off from the top of the car. Well easy that way

Something to note.. never lube that bushing with anything other than soapy water. Oil/petroleum based lubricants will not allow the rubber to 'grasp' the aluminum for the proper seating.

To start, the vehicle has to be loaded to a specific weight before aligning, and the fuel tank has to be at a certain level. BMW has different specs for all the different models, so he would have to look it up specifically for your car and add the appropriate weight to the vehicle. Also, some models have a procedure to go through after alignment to relearn the DSC system to the new alignment angles. And lastly, the rear toe can be difficult to set for someone not familiar with the unusual setup.

@@torquesteer2657 It needn't be hard. A large f-clamp, or a ratcheting luggage strap could be used for pressing on the bush. But a more serious problem is that not correctly placing the bush will cause it to fail very quickly. BMW specifies a precise measurement for the distance between the bush and the middle ball joint.

You made that a whole lot more complicated than necessary. The 21mm nut on top can be accessed from the engine compartment with a long wobble extension bar and socket which means you can also make sure the joint is torqued up to the correct setting. Attaching the rear fixing BEFORE you reassemble saves all the hassle you made for yourself. I did mine, both sides, in 20 mins without a hoist and I am not a pro mechanic.

Spray silicone lubricant is differently your friend in this repair. @ 14:24 the tech held the bushing in it's mounted location. Tom Yeah they can be a beast as the rubber can really stick to the control arm. If you are just replacing the bushing only, then you will probably want to remove the entire control arm from the vehicle and try and get the bushing off on a bench where you can get better leverage. Worst case scenario, replace the control arm also, just make sure you put the bushing on in the right position so you dont have to try and remove it form the new control arm.

This video is excellent, and helped me a lot. BUT, the parts ( control arm & Bushing kit) that they sell on Amazon are GARBAGE. I bought the kit through their link here, and a year later the ball joints are shot. Yes, they're cheap, but they do not last. Do yourself a favor and buy quality parts. Now I have to do the whole job over again, something I'm not looking forward to.
@DougZbikowski

Have you ever done this? It's a lot more than a 10 minute job.All of his parts are coming off easily. I've spent an hour trying to get that center bolt off before because of it being rusted on. The joint connecting to the rotor at 8:55 came off very easily as well. You really should use a ball joint separator on that instead of banging on the wheel. This is one of those jobs than can take an hour per side to a half day per side depending on what you're dealing with.
