Hey guys I had the same problem and was able to clean the line without taking down the gas tank. Upon removal of the lines from the canister pellets was coming out. To keep from removing the gas tank simply remove your gas cap and get a shop vac and put the hose in the blow position in the back of the shop vac. Put the hose in over the fuel tank hole and turn the vac on to blow. It will force air thru the tank, from there shack the vent hose and pellets will start coming out. Do it a few times until the vent hose is clear. You will know because once your put air pressure on the fuel tank from the vac the vent hose will blow air with no more signs of pellets. Hope this help someone

Does the gas tank need to be empty to do this strategy?
@hektor1501

I did it with a low fuel level with no issues. However, did not work. I did however vacuum the intake line from evaporator canister with the charcoal, and got over a cup of pellets. I also use an impact drill with a 1/2 ratchet extension to rattle the lines and the tank, thus allowing more pellets to come out. I will try the forcing air vacuum cleaner method again, but this time I will rattle the tank and then vacuum the house from evap canister. If this doesn’t improve, i will drop tank and clean those hoses closest to the venting system. 2010 Chevy Tahoe 136k. I’m disappointed Chevy did not had a screen in the evaporator canister in the first place. Good luck. I’ll be trying this again today.

You saved the day for me. I changed out the purge vent valve. Reset the light and fault code. Thinking that my problem was solved, I went to the gas station only to find the problem was just as bad as ever. It still took 20 minutes to fill my tank. After seeing your video, I removed the carbon canister and dropped the tank. I found exactly what your video showed. My vent lines were clogged up with carbon granules that had escaped from the bad carbon canister. I blew them out, replaced the carbon canister and while I was at it, I changed out the fuel pump. My life is so good again because of you. No one else had any idea about the possibility of clogged lines full of carbon granules. Words cannot express my gratitude. Thank you.

I replaced the canister and vent valve and didn’t work. I thought it was maybe electrical but all plugs were good. So I saw this video earlier. Blew the lines out and now I’m filling up at full speed. The canister was packed with carbon, the vent was packed too with clay and carbon so I just replaced them about a year ago. I dropped the gas tank thinking it was clogged. It was clean surprisingly. A year later I feel like a dummy for not checking the vent lines

First, thanks for the effort in this video, it helped tremendously! However, even after the canister and vent solenoid re-locator were installed I still had the filling issue. It turned out to be carbon in the line still. Most people drop the tank but this is NOT needed. If you take the fitting back off with the 90 degree elbow, white in color you can suck the carbon out with a shop vac. I taped the shop vac onto the line, had my wife loosen and tighten the gas cap every 5 seconds or so and could watch the tank flex with suction so you know it was working. I then rattled the line as best as I could with the room you have and low and behold I got several bunches of the particles out, about a cup or cup and a half in total. Issue is fixed. Hope this saves some of you time and effort. This was on a 2007 Yukon Denali. Regards!

Hi, thanks for your feedback! I have the same symptoms on my 2010 Tahoe and was wondering if the charcoal could actually get into the tank and cause major damage to the fuel system (pump, filter, injectors, etc.) of if it usually gets stuck in the lines all around the canister and purge valve. Just to know what to do, I have slow fill ups & "tighten fuel cap" message coming in an out at times (no engine light). MPG seem bad too.

Thank you very much for this video! I've got 2007 Chevy Tahoe LTZ 5.3 .I've been pulling my hair out with this slow tank fill and now I seem to have it resolved. After replacing charcoal canister (which Greenacres Chevrolet in Palm Beach County, Florida wanted $1,900 for... don't ever go there, absolutely pathetic), vapor canister vent valve, EVAP Solenoid Purge Valve on engine... I was still having slow fill up problems. My old charcoal canister was leaking charcoal pellets at the fuel line in port. After watching your video, I thought lets attack that line but I didn't want to drop the tank... a bit over my pay grade and afraid to cause another issue. So I pulled the line at the canister and vacuumed it out while my daughter was opening and closing gas cap. We got a bunch of pellets out! I thought, this is it, we got it. But sure enough, slow fill up persisted albeit seemed a bit better. My dad has air compressor so I pulled line off again and went he blew air into tank and little holes visible next to main gas fill. A good chunk of pellets came out again, perhaps those my vacuum was not strong enough to pull. Next fill up, gas handle only stopped like 3-4 times. Filled up faster than guy next to me... which use to be at least 3 cars prior. I can deal with pump stoping 3-4 times believe me. Thanks very much!!! Like Glen said, "Life is so good again because of you." Never thought it would feel so good filling up tank and spending $65. Though... would feel better if it was $35 again.

I’ve changed the purge valve, purge solenoid and vapor canister. Still takes forever to pump gas. I’ll try the vacuum approach a couple of posters mentioned. If that doesn’t work, I’m off to a shop. I don’t have a lift or any way to drop the tank nor do I really want to try to do it alone (age 67). Lots of charcoal pellets fell out of the canister when I removed it so I’m sure that the line is clogged. Thanks for the helpful video! Update: I connected a 1/2” clear hose to my shop vac using some homemade adapters and the nipple cut off the old vapor canister. I made sure to cut off the raised ridge on the nipple so that it wouldn’t lock in the hose fitting. It sucked a lot of charcoal pellets out of the line. Using the same plastic hose, I then blew into the evaporator hose with my mouth with the gas cap off. The hose appeared to now be clear. WARNING: I could smell gas vapors as I finished this and got concerned about the vapors exploding inside my shop vac. It was sucking vapors from the tank once the blockage cleared. Though it appears to have worked for me, I don’t recommend that anyone use a shop vac to remove the charcoal pellets. There is a risk of explosion. I may have been lucky!

On some, there are two hoses inside the tank that connect from valves to the bottom flange of the fuel pump. When you have a canister fail and the charcoal invade the EVAP lines, you must clean those lines inside the tank. Or else you will continue to have the hard fill up issue. I just had one where it was clogged up. I allowed some gas to enter the hoses inside the tank and then hooked the fuel pump back up and installed it. Then I blew air to the smaller hard connector at the fuel pump blowing in the direction of the fuel pump. That created pressure inside the tank and all of a sudden the charcoal and fuel that was inside the line came out. That fixed the problem of the hard fill up after the new canister and vent valve was replaced.

I'm in the same boat with you, dude. One thing I've noticed about the tank on my 08 Tahoe though, is that the fuel pump has 1 fuel line and 2 vent lines coming off of it and NO secondary purge vent valve on top of the tank like this one here. I saw a video of a dude replacing the actual fuel pump on his tahoe and it LOOKS like there's an internal vent line that you have to hook up to the fuel pump assembly. So I'm dropping the tank yet again tomorrow, and pulling the fuel pump to see if there is, in fact an internal vent line and vacuuming that sucker. You might have to do this as well. I should have checked those connections from the pump last week, but I just didn't think about it.

Buz Buzbee yes the talk does have internal venting and also a built in roll over valve, all of which can get clogged, some of these tanks also have a calving system so it allows you to fill the back of the tank for Sth and then the front, that valve is also built into the tank and is why GM try’s to always sell the entire tank, we worked at it for hours and finally got it clear

@APDTY

Dor El the black particles are actual charcoal that is suppose to be inside the charcoal vapor canister, in this situation the canister was not replaced early enough so the carbon pieces broke down and ended up circulating through the entire venting system and prevented venting which prevented fuel from being able to enter the tank at a normal pace. It may be possible to clean them without dropping the tank but not really able to access all of them.

Used tank was just installed, tank is not venting,,, whoosing when removing gas cap. Hose from tank to charcoal canister appears resrticted ( cannot blow air into tank) gas cap is off. Should air be able to be blown into tank at canister hose end or is a roll over valve the culprit supposedly lines were blown out before install

Do you have to clear (blow out) the evap line from the purge valve (on the engine side) down back to the tank where these connections meet also?

Yes mine had pellets all the way to the engine side

Hi thanks for the video I really appreciate it. The links to the parts you used do they fit the 2005 4.8 liter Tahoe? According to Amazon it says they don’t fit? I just don’t want to buy the wrong parts. Thank you for your help
What's the name of the lines that were clogged, i want to buy new? Do you know the part number?

Ron Kelly these are the vapor and vent lines, unfortunately on this model General Motors only sells them with a brand new fuel tank and it is very expensive, it took a lot of work but we finally got them clean without replacing,

nando_cali_boi so you probably have the same problem as we are hearing this over and over again, if you read up a few comments, someone used a shop vac to suck out the charcoal pieces, I am not positive this would work as we had the tank down already trying to figure out the problem, it’s a little more work but dropping the tank allows you to get to and see all the vent tubing and valves built into the gas tank

I have a 2005 avalanche; same problem. Did you resolve the problem? If so how did you finally do it? did you have to drop the tank?
@jccchapman7604

I wouldn't have dropped the tank. I would have connected a vacuum cleaner to the big port that was connected to the canister and blew air into the fuel tank to flush the charcoal out of the lines.

Is there anyway I can clear that without the need to remove the fuel tank
@APDTY

Muayad Abu Ghalioun probably not, this is not a fun job but the dealer charges over $1000.00 for the fuel tank so we went through all of this with the hopes of fixing it, there is no guarantee that doing what we did will even work so we had put that time in and experiment and find out

Piss pour (literally pouring out charcoal) design. Then you folks want to say "epa" and not GMC. GMC has done a great ton of terrible designs past and current. Honda, Toyota, Mazda no issues with this charcoal filters even with EPA up their butt.

Hmm, we actually sell a ton of Toyota charcoal canisters and really many other manufactures. The key is usually high-mileage vehicles. They all use very similar charcoal filters.

@@APDTY we have over 40+ Toyotas in the family, none have needed one except mine b/c i ran over something and it got damaged. They are 100,000mi to over 400k mi vehicles. Of the friends I have, none has every replaced or had fueling issues. My 01 express doesn’t have this issue. My 2020 tahoe does. All my fords f250 (200-400k mi) don’t have this fueling issue. Thanks for showing me what is really involved to properly clear out all the lines of all the charcoal from a degraded EVAP canister. I will not even try to attempt it on my old rust bucket, a 2002 Ford Taurus.. When filling with fuel I'll just pull the line from the purge under the hood, then put it back on when done. Robbie Glass not sure you know what you are talking about, sometimes u have to remove parts to get to the bottom of a problem, sometimes you also have to track down all of the damage downstream, I guess you would just put your hand on the hood and telepathically figure out all the problems right?
