This 2005 Forester was brought in by someone who had heard I was a Subaru enthusiast by word of mouth. After running the car and suspecting internal engine damage, I tried checking for one of a few common failures before digging too deeply. Valve timing ended up being way off, since the cogged idler bearing had completely let go of its balls and caused the belt to jump. There were hot metal balls melted into the plastic timing cover and all over the place. I had a set of timing components on hand and decided to try resetting the belt with new pulleys. I figured the valves would have kissed pistons. Fortunately that was not the case, and the car ended up firing up and sounding great!
