Thank You!
This is a video I made about a starter problem I had with my 2WD 2005 Honda Rancher TRX350TM
This video shows what the starter was doing.
Now, im no mechanic, but I will give you some information on how to replace the starter on this model ATV.
First you need to remove the seat of the ATV. Remove the cover of the air housing assembly. This will expose the air filter. There are 2 "tubes" that run into the air housing assembly, one black, and one white . the white tube is the air supply for the carburetor. The black one is the carburetor boot. Loosen the ring clamps that hold both hoses in place. GENTLY work those hoses out of their holes. Once that is done, you will have to remove the plastic cover that is on the right side of the motor (right side, as if you were sitting on the ATV) This cover says "Honda" on it. Once that is removed you will see a black hose that runs from the top on the engine up to the air assembly box. Use needle nose pliers to loosen the clamp, slide the hose clamp back and pull the hose off. Now go to the rear of the ATV. On the bottom of the air assembly box, you will see a small tube, it may be clear or orange in color. Just behind that tube you will see a bracket that mounts to the starter and it also has a bolt in it to support the air assembly box. This bracket comes apart in 2 pieces BE SURE TO REMEMBER HOW IT GOES ON! Remove that bolt. From the top, carefully pull the air assembly box out of the hole. Now is a good time to clean your air filter if it is dirty. Refer to the owners manual on how to clean the filter.
When you have the air box out of the way, you will have clear sight to the starter motor. It is cylindrical shaped, about 4 inches long and 3 inches wide. Pull off the rubber cover and remove the wire that is on top of the starter. There are 2 bolts that hold the starter on, one on the left side and one towards the bottom. That black bracket will also come off when you remove the starter. As I said before that bracket comes apart in 2 pieces, you may have to take the bracket apart. (I really cant remember) Remove the starter bolts and the starter is ready to come out. There is a rubber seal in there where the starter goes in so its going to take some effort to get it loose. Just keep wiggling the starter until it breaks free. On mine, I took a thin pry-bar; stuck it in between the crack where the starter and engine meet and gently pried it loose while my brother in law wiggled the starter free. Once I got the starter out, I covered the carburetor with one hand (to keep the trash from going inside) while I brushed away all the dirt and debris that was under the starter motor. Then slip the new starter motor into place until its flat against the engine and it makes a tight seal. Be sure to put BOTH PIECES of the bracket back on with the starter bolts (if you had to take it apart) and tighten the bolts down.
Then put everything back together in the same order you took it off
Like this: Put in new starter with air assembly bracket, put in air assembly box, and replace bolt under the bottom hook the hose that was on the right side of the engine, replace plastic engine cover, push the black carburetor boot back into place along with the white air supply carburetor tube. Make sure the black carburetor boot has a good seal and tighten both hose clamps. Put the air filter back in (if you removed it) Snap air box cover back on and you should be ready to ride.
The new starter might sound different from the old starter, because its new. If you have the ATV seat off when you start it up, the new starter might sound "funny" Keep in mind you normally start the ATV with the seat in place, this may muffle the sound of the starter. Therefore, with the seat off, the starter may sound different.
Hope this helps you out.
